    About the girl giving you her ticket, it is sort of culture here, mainly after the crisis. People that use their tickets only for a short ride (tickets last for 90 minutes) usually give them to another passenger as they get off the metro/bus.

    The best 2 ports to travel via ferry are Rafina Port and Laurio Post which are accessible via busses (also important download move it and OASA Telmatics for the busses) especially in Rafina port you can travel to most of islands you want bit in Laurio only to nearby islands

    I'm glad that I explored the Greek islands in 1973. No cell phones, no computers, no internet, no Airbnb. You really could do Europe, especially Greece, on five dollars a day. Would love to do it again, but not going to happen in this life,

      @@ellieellieellieellieellieI appreciate your comment, as it's given me an excuse to look at my travel journal again. I was on the islands the first 3 weeks of April, so the tourist season wouldn't have started by then. I was the only guest at the hotel in Astypalaia, and Nissyros didn't even have a tourist-type hotel at the time. I stayed at a workers' hostel, which is not to be confused with a traveler's hostel. I stayed at a pension in Rhodes. I skipped the more popular islands like Mykonos. This was before the days of high-speed ferries and low-cost European airlines like Ryanair, so even at the height of the summer tourist season, the crowds then weren't as bad as they are today. I spent the remainder of the summer in Europe, and even during the busiest periods, the crowds at places like the Louvre or Coliseum were not at all like they are today. Happy travels!

      @@jm-bv1wh that sounds amazing, I’ve been looking into the smaller and harder to get to islands in an effort to experience something like that. If you ever decide to upload photos of that trip, I’d love to look at them!

      @@ellieellieellieellieellie Digital cameras didn't exist in 1973, so I'd have to scan my photos to a computer. Never even thought of doing that. Back then, not all cameras and film were compatible with each other. Someone told me to get an Agfa camera, because Agfa film was available all over Europe, whereas American brands like Kodak were often hard to find and very expensive if you could find it. I got the smallest, cheapest camera available, because of the risk of theft, and light weight. It had a fixed focus without flash, so wasn't very good for landscape photos, but was perfect for snapshots of people, so most photos that I took were of people whom I'd encountered. I'm glad that I did that, because the beaches and mountains are still there, but many of the people whose photos that I took are gone, never to be seen again. I came across a group of young boys playing soccer in Astypalea, and when they saw that I had a camera, they begged me to take their pictures, playfully pushing each other out of the way to be in the front, making funny faces and acting how young boys would act. I would love to go back there with the photos and see if they could be identified 50 years later, to see who was still there, who had moved away, or who had passed away.
      So many islands to choose from. I'd check out Kefalonia, one of the Ionian islands, and the least touristy of the group, if that's what you're looking for. I met someone who was from there, and he felt that it was one of the most beautiful Greek islands, and not just because he was from there. Definitely harder to get to! Actually easier to get to from Italy, so may take you too far away from the rest of Greece. The good thing is that it's probably hard to go wrong with any of the islands if you do some research. Just avoid Easter in the cities, as it's a major feast/holiday and rooms can be hard to find. Hoping that you go on your trip - don't hesitate! 😊

  • @nk3280
    @nk3280 Рік тому +5

    It’s not so much that “new” ferries have exterior decks and the “old” ones do not or the other way around.
    Most ferries have exterior decks ( maybe except those which only carry passengers) but according to the law in HIGH-SPEED vessels during traveling passengers can’t go outside. However many companies are pretty loose about this rule
    For example if you try blue star ferries which mainly operates non-high speed vessels all the ships ( old and new) have MANY exterior decks which you can visit and sit during the whole trip
    Also to avoid delays you can try the morning trips from Piraeus because the ferries that depart in the afternoon hours usually are on the second round trip having already rounded up delays due to huge traffic on the morning itineraries

    Speed Ferries are NOT three or four times faster! Fast ferries in Greece
    Typically travel at 31 knots. A few travel at 38 knots. Conventional island ferries travel at 18 to 26 knots. So the fastest fast ferry is AT BEST twice as fast as a regular boat. A Typical fast ferry is only marginally faster than one of the modern conventional ships.
    I avoid the fast ferries like a plague and I encourage tourists to do the same. You get an airline seat and NO outdoor deck space for 80 Euro, compared to a more pleasant ship with sun decks at 45 Euro, and all you 'gain' is 75 mins on a long crossing. The only reason to use fast ferries is if you have missed the last regular boat and all that gets you from A to B that day is one of those wretched fast craft.
