    The internet connection thing on Captain Chords was about piracy and stuff. There's a huge thread about it on their forum how customers keep asking them to get rid of it because it really impacts the experience, but they keep saying "no no", and they lost so many customers because of it. That's actually the reason they lost me as a customer as well

    I compose music, Orb Producer, is way way more advance, I have, yet, to use it, but when I was playing with it, it is more musical and is capable of complex and advanced ideas... and yes, it even does non diatonic (outside the selected scale, while still sounding right for the scale selected.) chord and melody progression. which is exponentially more advance....

    I just picked up the new orb producer suite 3. Ive used captain chords for a few years and only use it when i need some inspiration/new ideas. I haven’t tested out ORB yet but its gotten so many positive reviews i figured it was good to add to the arsenal. I also picked up Scaler 2 a few months ago which i LOVE. Its inspiring and you learn a lot while using it. Again I don’t always use any of these type plugins but are good when you need some ideas/ inspiration or sometimes variations of chords and melodies.great comparison. You should do an update on this when the new Captains comes out in December.

    Orb Producer suite looks like a former pissed off Captain Chords employee left them and spilled some secrets and ideas to the competitor. They really improved on so many things that Captain Chords do, all they need to do now is add drums and the Captain will be in trouble. The Captain needs to answer with an update or Orb Producer and Scaler 2 will make them irrelevant very quickly.

      Yeah, the AI on Hexachords' previous software (Orb Composer) was pretty genius, but lacked in the UI/Usability department.

      I hope captain chords gets in trouble business wise. That's what happens when you don't listen to your customers who are literally saying "take my money, just fix this one thing", and they're like "we ain't fixing nothing, we don't want no money". Other competitors can put them out, cause CC sucks with their decisions.
      I realize this sounds kinda hateful or whatever, but that's how business works. If you don't give potential customers what they ask for, you will reap the consequences (and tons of lost sales. And any company who does that willingly without thinking clearly deserves what happens to them)

    Does Orb have something like Tension? As someone who is not schooled (I got as far as playing a recorder in school ;-) ) I do like the fact that Captain Plugins attempts at making me a bit more knowledgeable. It's also why it is fairly good to edit the melody inside Captain Melody rather than pasting it first cause then you lose how it supports you. I guess with no melody editing in Orb it doesn't matter that much really if it had as you'll fiddle with it outside Orb and hence it wouldn't help you. It does feel like it's why you skip over the feature as you'll be tempted to see it from an Orb workflow which simply can't provide support in this area (you might also care less if you are less likely to sin against music theory). If I see Orb at an interesting price on sale I'd probably buy it just to play around with as it does look like it can give fun results really fast. If there's one thing I'm not short on it's good synths though so I don't think it's a redeeming quality in either really.

    Thanks for a really helpful review. I have Odesi / Captain Chords and after a postive review of Orb by Doctor Mix, (the most upbeat soul on the internet!), I was wondering if it was worth getting Orb as well.
    I totally agree about the slightly clunky interface on Captain and also I believe you can add any number of additional verses / sections on Orb, where as on Captain you seem to be limted to verse, pre chorus, chorus and drop. You can obviously export and then amend a verse. I may have missed how to add extra sections but that highlights another shortcoming in my opinion, there is no manual, just hints and a few helpful videos.
    Also, the sounds on Captain remind me of my trusty old Yamha TG100, (circa 1996).

    Captain Melody can do arpeggios. You just need to tinker with the lanes and tensions. It is not 1-click, but it works.
    You didn't even use the rhythms that ship with Captain Chords.

      @GetSongsDone  4 роки тому +1

      I did go over captain's chord rhythms while recording, but must have accidentally edited them out of my video. Forgive me, I'm still relatively new at this.
      If anyone is wondering, Captain Chords' built in rhythms have a very EDM feel to them, but are otherwise pretty good.

  • @scottbitz5222
    @scottbitz5222 4 роки тому +8

    This is a pretty good overview of both (I have the Captain plugins).
    Personally, I feel the Captain plugins are targetted at EDM(all genres)/Hip Hop/Trap producers whereas Orb really would be great for traditional music in all honesty.
    I saw that because the Captain Deep plugin basically just gives you a root note bass (or opposite) which when you listen to those types of music, basslines tend to be really simple (a frequency to fill the spectrum vs a moving part more akin to a counter melody in almost all of the popular music) and arps are usually much simpler and directly generated in the DAW/Synth directly from the chords making an "arpeggio" plugin completely redundant. I think that the last point on the ARPs is especially true because what Orb generated ear the end based on the other plugins really was more of a counter melody which, if worked correctly, would sound amazing in just about any production.
    I will say Captain Melody took me quite a while to learn (like 6 months on and off from getting frustrated with it while producing songs lol) to generate usable melodies that only required minor editing versus everything I've seen with Orb Melody you can really easily generate a decent melody almost out of the box, but everything else is really useful and great for getting the backbone and parts of a song laid out.
    Lastly, I do think if you can swing it, having both definitely seems like the way to go as you could quickly create all sorts of songs in any genre and at least have the progressions, melody, arps, sick basslines, and drums all lined up for a vocalist especially if you're a "beats" producer you could be easily making 4-5 solid beats a week without hardly breaking a sweat.

    • @GetSongsDone
      @GetSongsDone  4 роки тому +4

      Thank you for taking the time to write such a succinct overview. Pretty much the same conclusion that I came to...If only I could have so elegantly found the words in my review. Maybe on the next one.

    This is not a fair review of captain plugins. Trust me on that. If there is any of the two products that's too busy and clunky then it's not captain plugins. Your review seems more targeted at favoring Orbs. But this may not be deliberate from you. You were already describing captain deep crapsh*t even before going deep in it. You said the rhythms are a bunch of random ones. You don't think the rhythms in obs are equally random ones hidden behind a control? That complex chord stuff you talk about in orbs is even easier with captain chords. There is wide selection of complex rhythms, variations and presets in captain which you can access with a click. Captain also comes with a feature that allows you create beats for verse, prechorus, chorus etc. Secondly, you can't use captain plugins in isolation, they were designed to interact with one another. Therefore, if you create a chord in captain, it will give you only the bass or melody that suits the chord. But it's all good.

    • @GetSongsDone
      @GetSongsDone  4 роки тому +5

      Thank you for taking the time to write this. You may be right about me favoring Orb, but it sounds like you haven't even used Orb Producer at all. Both of these sets of plugins "talk" to each other and generate song sections (Orb can generate as many as you like, not just verse, pre chorus, chorus, bridge) Orbs parts seem to communicate in a more musical way. Try it out and you'll see. I do really like Captain Plugins, especially Captain Beat. If it weren't for Captain Plugins, I don't think Orb Producer would exist.

    But all.of them sound like shit...for now .... The melody builder is kind of random the only good thing is chord builder that usefull.anything else not...I think Avia is the best so far with their technology ...but this will get better in time so I'm kind of exited and scared at the same time ...I hate the idea that you don't need any knowledge and skills to create music it just kills out life purpose :(

      Avia is next level, but pricey. Also, it's extra steps getting midi into your daw. I wouldn't discount orb. Hexachords has been in this space for awhile.

    Both plugins are ultimately just a gimmick! There is nothing like your own ideas and their implementation. You will never land a hit with these plugins! It's just for people with no own ideas who wanna play a litte bit!

      Music today is pretty meh. Don't see why these couldn't make a hit. Lol
