what kind of songwriter are you
I never told anyone this:
Years after, my semi-successfully local band, Born Yesterday, broke up.
I had moved to Vegas to stay with a friend who wanted to help me get back on my feet.
Life beats you up pretty bad if you don’t have a plan BTW.
I started looking in the weekly local alternative newspaper.
I’m sorry, I forgot the name of it.
It was the paper that had all the info about what shows were playing that week, how someone’s local art gallery was making an impact, and how a local coffee shop was also an art gallery making an impact.
To date myself, these newspapers had classified ads, which are basically affordable ads that anyone could purchase, and they had listings in different sections (or classifications?)
**For Sale,** **Services, Job Opportunities,** FOR RENT:
Basically, Craigslist for the newspaper.
I felt compelled to explain that.
The one section that I liked to check was the music section.
They would have instruments for sale, and some bands would have auditions for different singers. You could also find open mic nights in this paper (I’ll save that story for later)
*In the short version, I found a progressive metal band auditioning vocalists.*
I called the guy, Thad (If you are reading this, say hi. Miss ya, buddy.)
We vibed okay enough for me to check out more of their stuff online.
The music was on MySpace, and it sounded like it was Metal from another realm.
The guitarist was this super-talented guy from Hawaii who could make the guitar squeal like I had never heard before.
They were playing Tool-inspired grooves with more emotion, like a perfect circle, but harder somehow.
To this day, I have never heard anything like it.
The closest thing was something like Tool, A Perfect Circle, and a regional band called Submethod (Who I was fanboying over)
Their music just made you want to move.
I was determined to sing for them, but it was so different.
I knew I had to be different somehow.
I felt I needed some kind of trademark or costume to sound like I belonged in this group.
I had already downloaded some of their tracks and wrote vocal lines for a couple of their songs.
I was stoked but nervous as AF.
No one knew I was doing this.
I dressed in all black and cautiously approached the rehearsal space.
I heard it.
They were already playing in perfect sync in the background, and even more anxiety coursed through me.
*Who did I think I was?*
I somehow forgot that I had played in a band for years. I forgot that I opened for the Gin Blossoms (watch the video here to learn more about this: www.getsongsdone.com/challenge) and bigger regional acts (including Submethod)
It was crazy having to step up to something like this.
And I did… for a little bit, but ultimately, I felt like I wasn’t good enough to be in this band.
Like I didn’t deserve to be in the room.
They were too out of my league and I couldn’t comprehend holding my own or executing a vision that intense.
So, I did what most of us do when we are first called to be better.
We stop trying; we quit; we make excuses for why we can’t.
We’re too busy, we don’t have time.
And maybe it’s all true.
For me though, I just wasn’t ready.
There were too many things that I needed to fix to be that great.
I hadn’t built a strong enough musical foundation.
I was too out of practice.
So, you may have let your musical talent get rusty like I did.
You may have let yourself go (musically speaking or otherwise…)
But you are the only one that can fix it.
I didn’t realize this until over a decade later.
Learn from my mistakes.
Start making small wins towards your goals in music and life.
They stack up and before you know it you have an albums worth of songs, you are in better shape, you are communicating clearly and some of your goals are now behind you.

How's your songwriting going? Mic went out while actually making music. Probably better to watch it that way 😅Fortunately, I switched mics at the end.

The discord: discord.com/invite/pDpucWyV Sorry/not sorry to anyone easily offended. 9 times out of 10 when I say "you" in a song, I'm talking to myself (often at different points in my life) Also, it's sad that i feel like i have to explain this.

I managed to cris-cross my mic inputs, but fortunately you still hear what I'm saying. Everything will be correct for vocal mixing tomorrow. Fixed audio at 55:00 🥲

there's also people who just will cheat and that's that. The problem is that this positivity reinforce the cheaters.. those are the ones that get there first. Spitting out 10 albums a year vs 1, maybe 2 doing it honestly.. it's just, well, unfair to say the least. Tools is something that eases down specific tasks, boring or just repetitive, like automatic remove drum bleed from some mics or something.. but this is is nothing like that..its about replacing creativity cheating. The thing is, you don't and can't know who generated lyrics in AI..or write the whole song, then hit the recording studio and record the song like a cover band..who can tell? this is just awful

Depends on the goal and your current level. if you are tone deaf and think you will be the next kanye west then it will take around 10 years + 5 year of ear training. If you already have a very good ear or absolute pitch and you can retain sounds in your mind then you can likely practice creating interesting sounds and it might take you around 5+ years to hone down on creating a unique sound that might carry some substance. not sure why you had to make 20 min of talking
