He was known for playing a drunk, ironically he was not a drinker at all.
I learned that he was a heavy drinker when younger, but not when he developed this character... I never saw anybody playing the drunk as precise and funny like this man, just cracks me up every time XDDD
His dad was a heavy drinker tho . . Thats how he learned how to do it
He always described his character as someone that didn't normally drink had just one too many at a party
Unlike Dean Martin who was only sober one night of the year. That was new years eve, because that was amateure night.
@@darkiee69 Actually, Dean used the drinking as a kind of a bit as well. He drank sure, but not like people think. It wasn't always scotch in that glass. Or so I have read.

James Laugh Anybody who has a brain and is a level headed thinker would figure out that he was playing a drunk and not someone who stutters. I was kind of blown away when she said oh I guess he stutters when it was obvious he was playing a drunk.

This man had me laughing so hard years ago that I fell off the couch. He was good at this. He doesn't even drink but you would not believe it watching him and listening to him. Missing him but plays his clips a lot....VERY FUNNY!!!
Foster Brooks was famous for imitating a DRUNK. Funny thing was, he was totally sober!
Probably only one at the roast who was sober.
These older roast are way better than anything on Comedy Central today. They prove you can you can be funny and clean at the same time.
I think this is Foster Brooks best work. When he gets to the end and tries to say "Mrs. Rickles" I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe!

These were the days. Back when people could do this and no one would get offended or butthurt as they took what was said for what it was, a joke meant to be funny with no real malice involved.
We certainly enjoyed this era. Watching the thin skinned get so bonkers any more, its disheartening.

I guess one of them finally did. What is with all this "reaction" crap, anyway? Who cares how someone reacts to whatever? Especially someone who has no idea what act a performer puts on? This India gal doesn't sound like she knows the first thing about Foster Brooks or what his act was.

Dean Martin's Roasts were made to make CLEAN FUN of everyone on stage. Check your ego's at the door. They made the audience feels like their part of the show.
This was back at a time where there weren't so many snowflakes. Everybody made fun of everyone's ethnicity and everyone just laughed. Very few people took themselves that seriously. Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno and other comedians like them will not do colleges anymore because people get too offended.
Don Rickles DESTROYED EVERYBODY so he had to take it. Don is the funnisest guy who ever lived...PERIOD.

This is actually one of the funniest bits I've ever seen. Brooks' timing is impeccable, and he the comedic timing and buildup work together perfectly.

Don Rickles was THE brutal comedian of that day. He was un merciful to people. That was his schtick, mean guy.Forster Brooks was one of the greatest drunk impersonators ever. He was unloadng on a man who deserved every bit of that and more.

I remember watching the Dean Martin comedy roasts when I was a young kid because my dad would watch them all the time. Foster Brooks was one of my favorites, he always played a stammering drunk. I miss the roasts & really miss my dad (RIP 2005).
These Celebrity Roasts are legendary! These were professional comedians and other Celebrities who were very often close personal friends and took turns "Roasting" (today it would probably be called "Funny Dissing") each other... My personal favorites besides Foster Brooks and Don Rickles was Red Buttons - a comedian from the "Old School" of Burlesque, who did some hilarious routines called "Never Got A Dinner"... I think you would really enjoy those....

The man played the best drunk on tv, miss pronunciation was his specialty he was hilarious, dean martin would corpse just looking at him. In the UK same era we had hilda baker, not a drunk but a master at getting her words muddled for comic effect

This was the 70s when we didn't take ourselves so seriously...there are about 100 of these celebrity roasts that Dean Martin did on NBC..and Foster was in about 70% of them. He was a national treasure..when u have time...take even just an hour and look up Foster Brooks on you tube...you will laugh so hard it will help ur soul! 😁 God bless!

Most jokes and humor like this would never be acceptable today due to political correctness. Seems like we've become more sexually perverted, yet the words and themes we use have become so much more restricted. Don Rickles was a top comic whose act wa to rip into ever person. He insulted & destroyed everyone. Definitely not PC at all. Foster Brooks's comedy roitine was pkaying a totally drunk man. These Roasts were famous people "roasting" each other..it was friends roasting each other. It was not meant to hurt or be mean. As you could see everybody was laughing..

Everone on the dais has a blast making fun of each other. No cruel or curse words. It was all done with humor, respect for each other n love. Nothing that would ever happen today. I dearly love revisiting these old dean martin roasts. Thanks for reacting to it. Plz do more.my all time fave is don rickles roasting then governor of calif Mr. Ronald Reagan. It was a thousand laughs in 10 minutes of the show. I love it.

there are few comedians who rose to the stardom of FOSTER BROOKS,he didn't perform till he was in his 60's,a genius comedian,learned this act from his dad on his dad's front porch listening to his dad and his best friend doing this act together

Back then, discretion was very important and the subtleties of inside jokes were very ambiguous because either you would laugh because they were laughing or you would laugh because you got what they were laughing about! Funny this: Foster Brooks never touched a drop in his life but could play the perfect drunk!
