I do appreciate the wacky, late 90s, 3D platformer that this is, and I wish there was a lot more variety in that genre these days. And I love the yo-yo style Cappy mechanics that are being utilized.
But I don't think I care for how the camera (and art style) is handled like Sonic, nor some of the level design with counterintuitive goals: Go fast, but also stop at all these places to look for secrets. I thought that was something the gaming industry would've grown from by now.
Like you said, it's probably great for replayability and for the people trying to speedrun, but for someone looking to enjoy a single playthrough, the design seems like it should've been a lot tighter or at least more refined to provide the best single playthrough experience.
Maybe one day I'll find a full-bodied 3D platformer outside of a Nintendo game that will fill me with that same joy.

I agree with what you said, I want to recommend this game to everyone even though I don't really think it's a game for everyone.
I personally loved it and I think it perfectly compliments Mario Odyssey, where Penny lacks in design for a casual playthrough, Mario lacks in design when going for a more experienced playthrough, as I thought the movement in that game was underutilized.
I'd much rather play a game like Penny's but I can see how people will most likely gravitate to a game like Odyssey (I like both games though)

This game is made more for time attack than to just go fast, but before time attacking you always have to have a run where you explore the whole level so you have an idea of your route in mind when you finally go fast, that is what the collectables force you to do in your first playthrough, or else you might spend an entire hour replaying a level over and over trying to get a better time without realizing your route is shit and there was an obvious faster path you didn't notice all along and you wasted your time.
I find this game amazing, i like it much more than any mario game. Going fast is not really the only appeal, finding opportunities for clever shortcuts through understanding both the level design and the limits of penny's moveset is cathartic. This game makes you feel like a genius.
That is what time attacking is about, it forces you into a mind-set, and with the level design being so flexible, it allows you to do crazy things you can't imagine if you look for it and incorporate it in your route.

Just rubbish, especially considering why Sonic Superstars turned out the way it did.
