the band literally asked for a specific audition that could nail there existing roster in a way that would make exisitng fans of the song continue to like it. this is pretty much against the point of the audition. If you arent screaming the screams then you may as well play the lead on acoustic guitar too.

Whether a vocalist sings or screams doesn't change the genre at all. You are just associating screaming with it because it is a frequently used vocal style for this type of band.
I would say genre is defined by the overall sound of the music. In this case even if Northlane had a vocalist who used only clean singing, it doesn't change them from being in the realm of progressive metal. Sure their style and approach would be different, but the overall characterization of the sound can still be defined.
Just because a band veers from the norm in a certain way compared to their peers doesn't mean they can't be compared to other groups using an umbrella term (their genre) that encompasses a larger spectrum of bands with similar attributes
The heavy vocals in Northlane's genre of music is what gives it the aggressive vibe, its what gives listeners the rush that comes with listening to this music. So yes, clean female vocals would definitely take away from the heavy aggressiveness. I mean most heavy music should come with heavy vocals. We all know that vocals like these are nothing like Northlane's, and listening to these vocals won't give you the same feeling at all. End of discussion. Heavy music + cute clean vocals = No. I mean imagine vocals like this video's singing Dispossession? Anyway all that put aside, if Northlane started only doing clean vocals, all their original fans (including me) would stop listening to them. Be real.
