I can't imagine how hard it had to be for Marion to separate herself from Edith's character after filming. I mean, she didn't just portray Edith.....she lived, and breathed Edith! Absolutely well done!!

@@r.r.r9746 The real Piaf wasn't vulgar. She had her issues but she still kept a respectable image.
Cotillard uses a very colloquial Parisian accent while Piaf spoke standard Parisian. Piaf was an alcoholic but she didn't made a spectacle of herself.

Black French that’s very interesting. Non-native French speakers would be unlikely to be differentiate between different registers in French,or be able to recognise their social significance. It is often people who, like piaf, have had precarious beginnings who set the most store by such things.

I was an absolute mess watching this scene. She deserved the Oscar for this one scene alone. Her pathos was gut wrenching. You feel her pain as she cries, "Marcel! Marcel! MARCEL!!" and slowly watch her go out of her mind with grief. Every cell of her body morphed into Edith - damn girl, you nailed it.

Yes on their first date, but she confessed to Marcel she did not like the taste of it. But it didn't matter to her because she was with the one she loved. So her favorite food is roast beef not so much that she actually likes the taste, but because it reminded her of her love and one of the happiest times of her life.

Let me tell you about this scene... remember when you were a kid and your hurt yourself really bad, like when you fell off the bike and your knee was bleeding? You may not have wailed but the tears were flowing really fast, you got choked up and your nose started running like crazy?
That is how I reacted in this scene when I saw this film in the theater with my mom. We both love Piaf's music. I was so embarrassed, crying like a baby in the theater and my mom was comforting me by putting her arm around me and letting me bawl.
I am around the same age as Marion Cotillard and I cannot believe that a person of her age gave such a performance. Not just the movement or the facial expressions, but she expressed such fragility and pain from deep inside which she so beautifully brought out on film. This is really one of the best performances I have ever seen.

I have always loved Edith Piaf for her unique voice but when I saw this film I also fell in love with Marion Cotillard because she could embody Edith's sadness, love and loneliness at the same time, sometimes she didn't need to speak only with her eyes and face expressions. I'm sure the scene when she's told Marcel is dead is one of the most difficult scene for any actor or actress cause she went to happiness and laughing to sadness and tears so fast, it's the scene that has made me cry the most. I'd like to think whenever Edith Piaf is she's happy for the homage to her memory this film represents and also with Marion Cotillard who was born to play this role, that's why she won every film contest she attended. But I think this film should also deserved the Oscar as the best film of the year!!!!!

It is one scene with the whole movie and an entire life collaged... very powerful, but so is the scene where she performs her break through performance. It was a brilliant directorial decision, after all the drama of her preparation to have a sequence of her performance shot in silence with just a soft instrumental sound track. The exterior of life is always so noisy and dramatic, the deep interior observes in a silent calm.

I remember the first time I watched it, my mom and I watched together and we were haunted by this last scene, as if our souls had been sucked and we were crying in awe with the miracle we had witnessed. I can watch this movie infinite times and I know I will discover something new everytime.

I never knew the lyrics because they were in French, but seeing the subtitles in English....wow, what a profound song.

How on earth did she manage to sound almost identical with Edith Piaf herself????

    • @torukmakto7855

      LoserlyCool That's not her singing. It's lip-syncing.

@@cmmiestcat I don't believe that she does, though? Now Edith Piaf had a very unique speaking voice that is pretty much impossible to copy. So she did a really really good job but it's nowhere near "almost identical". You can kind of tell that it's natural too.

Marion took voice lessons to improve her own abilities and to learn how Edith breathed and held herself, how she shaped her mouth, etc - she turned herself into a living representation of Edith Piaf, and it's astonishing - so much more than simply "lip syncing".

One of the best endings to a movie I've ever seen. It looked like she was singing the song with so much passion, but it wasnt even her singing. Marion Cotillard's performance was absoutely incredible

If Cotillard had never done anything else... And so perfect a homage to so special a figure.
The sub-titles are mainly right, but "the good times I've had" translates "the good done to me", which goes on to "the bad". An important distinction.
