    Holy cow, i have not seen a "quadraphonic sound "unit since i was a kid in 1975! My friend's dad had one, and by god it "looked" just like this one! That thing was powerful as I recall. To bad it may go to scrap.

      I have a quadraphonic system. It is an Electrohome, made in Canada unit. I will be doing a service video on that one, and because that one is mine I will be looking to completely restore that one. Quad units are relatively rare, but Made in Canada even rarer.

      Actually Andy, even non working with bad amps, an AS-1080 DB like that will easily go for $600~800 at auction and a working one in VG condition can easily bring $2000~2500 on Ebay (and I have two.) 😇
      And you're right, if you heard one they're bad ass!

    I really like the videos where you morph the description of the video with the intro on certain videos. I'm not a big intro guy anyhow, but you laying the description audio over the intro audio is quite effective.

    The Sanken S-40W, 60W, 80W and 100W's were commonly uses in many of the mid 70's models. Pioneer used them, Lafayette used them, Sony even used them. They were more rubust than the sanyo STK series but sadly are very hard to find anymore and with 4 sheesh! .

    I have to say I'm a little disappointed that you didn't dig deeper into this. Sure, 95% or better of power amp problems are the finals, and if you're trying to run a shop, I can understand limiting the time spent. But when you're running a video for education value, it would be nice to dig a bit deeper. Something external could be biasing those modules wrong. In fact, if they were shorted, I'd expect much worse.
    I once had a power amp that blew fuses because of a bias/level shifting diode in the driver circuit that opened up. I had to use the lightbulb trick and trace where the current was going (and why) to solve it. What's worse is that it was intermittent. Turned out, if you nudged the diode, it would start to work again.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +1

      I did. I put the meter on it, and DC voltage present on 2 of the 4 modules.
      The other 2 may have been OK, but for sure 2 were toast. The owner of it wanted an estimate to repair. These are very old modules, and you know how fleabay is as far as parts go.
      Had this been a discrete output amplifier, there would have been much more I could do, but on these module units, you give them the correct voltage in, and if you have a huge DC voltage out then you have a shorted transistor in the mix. This was obvious because another shop had already written it off. They even had scribbled on the heat sink which module was for which channel.
      It all boils down to economics. The client that owned this unit is the same one that brought me a Hafler amp for repair, fixed, and that leak delta 75, with a blown obsolete transistor. If you watch that video you will see that I did find a suitable substitute for the original, and that one is is back in service.
      The Leak was a rarer piece, worthy of spending more time on, and it uses conventional parts. When you get these modular amplifiers it would have been questionable to repair even when the unit was only a few years old, as this wasn't considered a real high end piece like a Sansui, Pioneer or Marantz.

    • @russellhltn1396
      @russellhltn1396 7 років тому +1

      The module is all DC coupled. A bad input voltage (leaky cap?) will cause a bad output voltage. Still, curious as to why two are like that. Either a common component or it suggests the user did something. Probably put too many speakers on the output and drove the impedance too low.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +1

      The 2 that were popped were the right front and right rear.
      The speaker switch you can select 4 channel mode, 60WPC or 2 channel mode 120WPC.
      My guess is the previous owner had a short on the speaker line and was running in 2 channel mode and popped both modules, then took it to a shop they diagnosed and recommended not fixing, and the person put it up on craigslist or fleabay, and my client bought it not working. Brought it to me, and I find that wires were disconnected.
      Reconnect and find that the outputs are cooked. The signal coming from the driver was good. I didn't show the scope waveform just due to the fact that the piece of crap scope I have is just about useless, and doesn't show up very good on camera. I hope to have a new scope soon. I have a few I am looking at right now.

    • @russellhltn1396

    It's pitty you did not fix this gorgeous amplifier. I think you could have tried a few things. First to see if the preamp outputs worked. If not I would call it a quit. Then you could remove all of those sunken chips and replaced them with sdks. I didn't want to see such a beautiful amp to waste especially if the chip had such a simple schematic.

    You are hearing noise, but say that those other two modules are broken to? If the modules are broken, there will be no sound, or hum. That is what these modules do. Maybe a pre-amp problem? Akai is known for using transistors that fail (hitachi) and all amps from this era will be having bad capacitors. I repaired serveral units, always the same problems.

    That's one of the reasons I hate power modules. When I worked in a shop in the 80s, I could still find them but they became scarcer and more expensive. Last I looked power transistors are still plentiful and easy to troubleshoot.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 років тому +1

      The ppower module (a sanyo invention) fad lasted through the 80's and in to the 90's. Then many companies started going back to discrete component designs and power modules fell out of favor. When they work they are fine, but if you manage to blow one up, good luck finding one today.

    I would replace the entire output section with a pair of LM4766 amplifiers. A bit less power maybe but probably a much cleaner output and a fairly easy job to change the topology, not too expensive and easy to get.
    Thanks for the videos. :-)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +3

      The decision as to what to do is left with the owner of the unit who has collected it by now. It is all about economics, and sometimes you have to move on. The owner of this unit is a viewer, and he has supplied some of the high end units that I have repaired, including the Hafler and Leak receiver as well as a few high end DVD and CD players.
      As you said, anything can be fixed, and I agree, and this is valid on a rare or high value piece, but a low end piece it doesn't make sense to spend much on.

    • @ZEROSTATIC72
      @ZEROSTATIC72 7 років тому +1

      As with anything, you're the man on the spot and many things are simply not worth fixing. It's the customer who decides in the end and it can be frustrating at times to give up on a piece of equipment that may have a second, third or n'th life. As always, thanks for the great videos and the reply. Peace. :-)

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому

      That't the point. I can give them advice and options, but ultimately it is the orner of the piece that decides the fate on the unit. They are more likely to spend money on a higher end piece because they can see the value. If we were talking an old Marantz, or Sansui, like the 9090 I own, then the chances or repair increase dramatically. Speaking of my 9090, I still plan to do a service on it, but haven't only because I am not currently using it, and it is all packed away in storage. Some day I will service that unit, because it is a valuable piece. It does work however all it needs is some control cleaning. The caps are old, but they also haven't been used in awhile.

    Hi! I have two questions:
    1) Could you specify what you mean by "watch the adds"? Are the five seconds before skip ok, or you mean to look at them longer? What is the proportional difference in revenue between the 5s and the entire add? I ask because I believe I'm doing fine by looking at the 5s and skipping, but if it's equivalent to blocking then I have to change my way of looking youtube vids.
    2) There is a 15-16kHz tone in the vids audio (I measured it with a spectrogram) that is really annoying. Maybe you dont hear it (sorry, not saying you're old) but could you look for the source of it and take it away?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +1

      Watching 5 seconds is fine. That gets the credit. Naturally every second beyond that adds a little more, but I don't pay much attention to those numbers. I am referring to those that use ad block software that blocks all ads. Those ones really hurt. In 2 ways. First because no ad gets shown, and second advertisers look at ad performance before they buy into a channel. The more lucrative advertisers stay clear of channels with low ad viewership.
      The other thing that is affecting everyone is the advertisers pulling their ads due to some channels that offer "offensive" content.
      Not pointing any fingers at any specific channels, because I hear my kids listening to this crap, and sending the channel owners patronage because they are crying that advertisers are avoiding their channels. Well guess what, these same people are driving the advertisers away from youtube in general, which affects everyone in the community. There was a recent news story talking about youtube, and specifically how advertisers are moving to other platforms like Amazon, because they don't want to be associated with the channels that produce offensive or vulgar content.
      I roll 100% of any earnings that I make from the channel into future projects. Those tube amplifier for example, and newer better cameras.

      .. so what I need is an ad blocker that actually watches the ads for me. };¬) that way you get the revenue, and I get to preserve a little bit of what remains of my sanity by not having to watch some inane drivel about some product I have absolutely no interest in.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +2

      I just let the 5 seconds play and close it. What is 5 seconds right. The ones that I get annoyed with are the non skip-able ads. I hate those ones, and that is why I don't force them, but I always have that option, but I don't because I hate those ones so much that many times if I am forced to sit through anything more than 15 seconds I am gone. The 5 second (your video wll begin in 5 second) ads, and the skipable ones I am fine with,

      There was a news story in the past month that shed much light on this situation. There are many channels that offer some incredible vulgar, offensive, and sexist content. I certainly don't watch / listen to this crap, but my 17 year old son sure does. If seems that some tubers feel that every other word out of their mouth has to start with the letter F or C.
      My son was upset a few months ago because one of his "idols" on the youtube had his monetization revoked, and this same person now is appealing to his followers to donate money to him directly.
      The news story claimed that several companies that were advertising with google have pulled their ads, and are running them with the competition now due to complaints they received about their ads being associated with obscene, or vulgar content. When google loses these high profile advertisers, it hurts the rest of us that just try to earn a few extra $ a month.
      Viewers that block all the ads just compound this. Ad blockers are not the only problem, but they sure contribute to the down turn in revenue.

I wish the plugin played ads for so I can support without actually paying (I have no money due to being disabled and on a fixed incom). You got it. "Beyond ECONOMICAL repair"
      The driver boards could be removed, and separate amplifier modules installed, but at what cost. This is not some rare piece of equipment.
      It is not like an old R-R tape deck, or an old 8Track player, or Betamax or some other rare format that is needed to play a specific format of tape, and it has to be repaired at all costs.
      Even though it has the quad decoder, that could still be used, or a stand alone decoder found IF someone had CD4 disks they needed to play, but that really isn't the case here.
      It was like back in the tube TV days and people would bring in an old console TV and want the picture tube replaced.
      I remember one old woman that came in demanding that I change the picture tube on her old Admiral TV. I explained that it wasn't worth it, and she fired back that who was I to determine what was worth it to her. She stormed off to another shop, and they billed her huge to replace the tube. 6 months later she was back, and the flyback was shot, part not available, as admiral had been out of business for over 25 years. All I said was too bad she didn't listen to my advice 6 months ago, she could have saved 300.00.

    • @AndyHullMcPenguin
      @AndyHullMcPenguin 7 років тому

      That all sounds very familiar. Back in the days when people repaired most things, the definition of beyond economical repair was some what different. My mother kept a 1920s electric cooker going till recently. It was made to last, and last, it did.
      These days, less and less is repairable economically. You could strip those faulty 60W modules open, figure out which of the internal ceramic PCBs was shot, replace the parts with some smd equivalents, and it would work, but that would probably be a four figure repair, for a hundred dollar item. The down side of all this of course are the massive piles of e-waste and the subsequent pollution that goes with it all.
      I'm probably almost as guilty as everyone else in this respect I might add, but I do hate to junk an item if it can be brought back to life without spending an arm and a leg on it.
      Maybe some enterprising individual might put together an open source modern PCB designed drop in for those unobtanium modules some day, but I doubt it, unless they also feature in some rare and therefore expensive piece of kit.

    • @AndyHullMcPenguin
      @AndyHullMcPenguin 7 років тому

      Sometimes what is worth repairing to someone is based more on sentimental attachment, I suspect the little old ladies TV might have been bought by her late husband, or had some other sentiment attached, a bit like my mother's cooker. Sentiment trumps common sense every time. Sometimes I've had to repair some piece of computer equipment for a customer that should have gone in the bin simply because they needed it working to get vital information from it. If your entire work flow is invested in your ancient kit, then it becomes vital to repair... of course the cost of repairing then outweighs the residual value of the item at that point, but the customer will pay for the convenience.

Out of curiosity, have you ever come across one of those Fisher 5.1 receivers, around 1995, The front ch. outputs are buried under a 2nd board, containing the Lr, Rr, and center channel outputs, all hardwired. I repaired 2 those. I vaguely remember that besides the output transistors, one channel, they took out a total of 26 resistors and driver transistors. Nightmare, no signs of heat, I damn near lost my faith in my abilities. BTW, it was a warranty job and Fisher would not replace the unit.

One that keeps popping up is Rick Hart, who added lyrics to existing musicbakery music beds. You can't copyright a song if you use royalty free instrument tracks, but they try, time and time again, and I have to dispute time and time again. As a matter of fact my father has one, I have one and we have a third one as a spare (long story) one top of that my father was an aerospace electronic engineer and performs his own maintenance and repairs as well as myself.
    He's retired and I'm a fighter pilot so this is not a solicitation for your business, rather seeing as we are both AS1080 DB enthusiasts and we are both experienced in electronics I would like to offer my assistance.
    If you need a copy of the full schematics I have the factory technical manual, I can also send referrals for where to get all the parts you could ever need from the top to the bottom of that anazing beast including capacitor kits, relays, solid states, transformers, faceplates, knobs or whatever.
    (We're a little fanatically cultist about the AS1080)
    Just give me a reply and a address as to where to email you the info and I can get my father to sent it to you within a few days at no charge.
    ImAnd if your friend with the beast decides that he doesn't want to repair it have him make me an offer and I may take it off his hands.

      Yo! A hundred wouldn't get you the filter caps. And they're the first things to go! The finals would be at least eighty bucks each! Have you tried the N-P avalanche resistance on each with a VOM? There may be only one or two that needs replacing if any.
      Those were also used in Sansui's top of the line and it's output was rated at 600W max, 300W per channel, two channels driven.
      (It was actually used at rock concerts!)
      Oh, and FYI the AS1080 is a strong 80W per channel, 40W in quad with four channels driven and 75W max in matrix front and back two channels driven before noticable 60Hz hum or high spectrum frequency distortion above 18K Hz. But you wouldn't care, you'd be deaf long before that ever happened. Trust me.

      you must be in a dream world if you think people around here will pay that kind of money to repair anything. I don't know about where you are and how much money Americans pay to have things fixed but here in Canada people will not pay money to fix this old equipment. This stuff is giving away on Facebook marketplace daily. In the last 10 years I think I've had three pieces of equipment where people paid more than a couple hundred dollars to repair something and that was parts and labor. How do you think I got a sansui 9090? it came in for service and this is going way back this is not something today this is going back to the mid-80s it came in for repair required all the outputs to be replaced and the drivers and they're made a follower resistor and some caps. The repair bill parts and labor and the parts alone cost about $150 was under $300 and the owner of it refused to pay so I kept it. I get people bringing me stuff and they say if you can fix it for $100 or less all taxes included go ahead otherwise don't do it. Half the time they won't even pay an estimate fee they all tell me they're going to pay for my estimate fee but then when I call them to tell them how much it's going to cost to repair it they tell me to keep it and I never see them again and the only way I make my estimate fee is by shooting a video on something that I don't repair and posting it so that you guys watch it and I get paid for my time. On this specific one I got nothing from the owner zero so the only money I make is when you guys watch it to see what went wrong with it and I make a couple dollars off the advertising revenue. they're not too many shops around anymore because to run a repair center where you're paying a bunch of overhead and you're paying technicians by the hour you have to charge a minimum fee just for something to come in the door and 99 out of 100 people won't pay that $85 or $95 estimate fee. Something shows up and I tell someone there's an estimate fee they walk away with it they won't even leave it. That's the way it is here that's why nobody's in this business anymore because there is no money to be made in it. I've had a few units shipped up from the states where I was paid quite well and given nice tips on top of what I quoted but that's only happened a couple times. There's just no money in this type of work and that's why I don't put as much effort into things as people think I should because I've already been told up front how much money they're willing to invest in it and soon as I get the top off and start seeing things like power module shot I know I'm over that limit immediately I call them and tell them this is what's wrong and they come and collect it. That's the reason I left the business as a profession in 2003. I did this for a living for about 20 years but even then 2003 people were not spending money to fix this stuff and they're certainly not spending it now. You might get a few audio fools that spend way too much on pieces of equipment but those people are few and far and quite frankly I don't even want them as customers because that's the type of person that you will never make happy. Most of them are unhappy people just by nature and they will sit there and nitpick. I had one such person with a tape recorder that one channel on playback was about a quarter DB less than the other and they brought that tape deck back about five times for me to make it perfect. I could show them it was perfect on my test equipment it was perfect playing my alignment tape and they would come back with their alignment tape and complain so it would make it perfect with their alignment tape and then they would come back because they made a recording and it was too hot the other way. We used to hate those people at the shop, and that's why I would see them all was when I was in the business we had one goofball with a television a brand new Sony who put up the old Indian Head test pattern I used a protractor to measure the center circle and the four circles in the corner came back with that buddy television I think five times because it wasn't perfect it was perfect in the shop but because the Earth magnetic field is slightly different at his house then it was at the shop the geometry was not quite perfect I was sent to his house and spent hours at his house making him happy with the TV pulled out from the wall so that I could work on it when the back was put on it and it was pushed back against the wall he measured it again and it wasn't good enough. We finally told him where to go and how to get there and I never went back. Today I don't want those customers I don't want pain in the ass customers that will nitpick and complain.

      Hey 12V,
      LOL! I agree with you totally, there is a limit to which our Canadian senebility and frugal sanity that could justify repairing anything that duct tape couldn't fix.
      Oh, by the way, did you say that Sansui was the model 9090?
      While I personally have never seen one except in photos I have been told that it was and still is considered the ultimate creme d'la creme imortal god of receiver-amps to which all other ramps lower their volume in respect to this day.
      Or at least the most impressive monster master blaster of it's day.
      But back to the Akai, in my family's case it's a labor of love that's born of cult like devotion as we have had three in my family since long before I was even born.
      They are excellent and impressive units that sound great and are quite reliable. The only maintenance our two (one's still in the box... like I said, it's a long story) have needed has been to replace the filter caps about every ten to fifteen years or so.
      When I get back to Canada (I own a ranch/airport in Vancouver, BC) I'm going to have to check out the prices by the last time I was home an AS1080 DB in excellent condition at auction on Ebay commonly would sell for at least two to three thousand USD or more and a VG cosmetically for parts only could easily sell for between 600~800 USD. I saw one of those Sansui's go for #12,500 USD!
      Not bad for almost fourty-five year old units.
      Well I've taken to much of your time and duty calls here so I should let you go.
      One last thing, did you ask who I am?
      Well, once again... it's a long story.
      I'm Capt. Tamre' Colby; Cmdr. 347th Bravo, USAFE/NATO EPAF,
      Viper CAS/AS,
      Ramstein AFB, Germany.
      I was born in Italy, raised in California, I live in Canada and I'm a citizen of all three..
      (Another long story, LoL!)
      Let me know if your customer wants to get rid of that old junker ).
      Rouch my photo on the left to go to my channel.
      While you're there watch my first officers video "Cloud Dancers Final Dance"
      if you want to learn more.
      Hell just Google my name.
      Ta! Ta!
      Honori majorum meorum,
      Capt. Tamre' Colby

      I'm sure it went to recycling years ago. Yes i have a 9090. eBay pricing means nothing. Fake news. I have seen what sellers do. I know sellers. If sometjing doesnt go high enough they bid themself from a second account and sell to themself. They pay the fees as it gives street cred and then list again. People see completed sales at high dollars and they rope the fools in. I know 4 sellers that do this. I have watched them do it. It creates hype and people do get suckered in to the bidding frenzy. Probably 50% of those high dollar sales are fakes. Won't be continuing though because these transactions are starting to be taxed as income. Money is also washed with these fake sales. A sansui 9090 might go for 1800 which is quite a bit lower than some of the eBay predictions. A used stereo shop had one for months with an 1800 price tag on it.
