Who doesn’t know this song with this catchy bassgroove? Although it might seem that the maingroove is always the same: it isn’t! The maingroove is the most ‘standard’ in the interlude (bar 56-64). But already in the first Verse the bass varies in bar 9 and also for instance in bar 29 in Verse 2. These are small details but in my opinion show the professionalism of the bassplayer (not playing always exactly the same but playing some variations which are hardly noticeable for most people).
And of course there’s this great hammer on note in the Choruses. For instance bar 18 in the first Chorus where the bass plays a hammer on with the 32th note (D to E on the G-string). In Chorus 1 and 2 the bass plays this groove the same, but in Chorus 3 there are some really nice variations. Listen for instance at bar 88; 90 and 92.
To make it easier to play the maingroove I advise to play the A note on the open string. This gives you the time to shift your left to the G note. Look for instance at bar 12. And also in the mainriff of the Chorus (as mentioned above) it’s better to play the A note at the beginning of the riff op bar 18 (= the last 8th note in bar 17) and in the end of this riff (last 8th note in bar 18) before going to the G-notes in bar 19. As you can see I play the A notes on the downbeat (3rd count) on the fifth position of the E-string. This gives more body to these notes compared with playing it on the open string.
My favorite licks are in the Outro. The licks in bars 111-112 and 115-116 are really fantastic with multiple slides.
I play this song on a Fender Jazz Bass with roundwound strings. Tuning is E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a bit distortion from a preamp.

Beautiful Pete, excellent cover. I try to emulate how smooth your right hand effortlessly drags across the strings. The tone again sounds perfect…👍
