Sonic Youth was a terrific band, kind of a precursor to the Pixies and Nirvana. If you want more I would recommend either Diamond Sea, Bull in the Heather, or Little Trouble Girl
I had a girlfriend in 90/91 who was a mad advocate for this album, amongst other underground bands. She was pilloried for being willfully obtuse, but she was clearly correct. Sonic youth, this Goo and others being evidence, are freakin awesome.
Check out the song that inspired this riff: Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. For more Sonic Youth, my favorites are Rain On Tin, Sugar Kane, Bull in the Heather, and The Diamond Sea
Sonic Youth had a long, great recording history, and if you dive deeper into their catalog than this one fantastic song, you will have many, many classics to hear! :-) They were one of the great '80s/'90s/early-to-mid 2000s American "alternative rock" bands, and they were, and are, *hugely influential* in alternative rock circles, but to me, SY is just a great American rock band, period. Great albums for thirty years!
Great to see you listening something new!! You should try with The Melvins, Meat Puppets, Breeders, PIL, etc...A whole new world for you I think. Greetings from Argentina.
Sonic Youth were a seriously influential band from NY who fitted more into the No Wave movement than any obvious Punk trappings! They had a unique habit of downtuning their guitars which later had an effect on certain Grunge bands like Mudhoney and Soundgarden! Plenty of fuzz and wah wah, backed by a Jazz inclined drummer made for one holy noise fest, although they weren't always blowing your ears out! This track is one of their more 'commercial' offerings, although still played in the aforementioned downtuning style, and taken from the album that broke them, and remains their greatest piece of work! At the moment Daniel, i must say that you are on one hell of a hot streak.
Before the internet and smart phones took over our lives , people learned how to play instruments and wrote lyrics in notebooks and were creating scenes
This song and album has so many layers of guitars. I love it. One of their best albums. Love this band. One of the most significant American Alternative Rock bands. Like The Cramps, n Wipers. They are so unique in their craft.
If you like to read... consider Our Band Could Be your Life by Michael Azerrad. It'll teach you more about what went into a song about J Mascis as president than any UA-cam comment ever could, and it'll let you know how important Sonic Youth is. And how important Dinosaur is. As far as genre... back then it was just punk rock or for the less inclined maybe college rock. In the 90s we might have called it something else. Maybe noise rock, I don't remember.
Maybe try the Stooges song “TV Eye”, The Stooges were a very influential band.. Sonic Yoith was considered underground rock and later called Indy rock or alt rock.
I'm not going to #SmashLike ... but, only because no one should ever knowingly be the 70th like. That said, I like this. I had the pleasure of seeing a free daylight (!) Sonic Youth/Sun Ra co-headliner in Central Park on July 4th, 1992 (I'm old, right?). IIRC, Thurston Moore (guitar/vocals) prefaced this song with a tongue-in-cheek dedication to "the Central Park hardcore scene." Great show. Great song. Great reaction. Glad you found it and appreciated it. BTW, there is a shaky video (audio's not bad, though) of that entire Central Park set on UA-cam. Check it out.
good one! a very particular sound. makes me wanna suggest frank black's solo stuff...his teenager of the year or self-titled album. space is gonna do me good, los angeles, speedy marie; or throwing muses- the real ramona- counting backwards. two step. both have amazing drumming, guitar work, lyrics...
Oh wow. You have no idea what minefield you just stepped on to. Sonic Youth are unlike any band that you have ever heard. They created a unique uncompromising daring original sound that created universes and galaxies with their detuned electric beautiful walls of noise and sound. They were from New York's late 70's underground experimental No Wave scene that rewrote the book on how to write a song and threw all the rules out the window. Sonic Youth will open a door to so many incredible things. They are one of a kind... J
If you like this, try Total Trash from the same album. But the best Sonic Youth is their earlish stuff... not really early, but like Green Light or Starpower and such. Maybe 3-4 years prior to Daydream Nation.

Legends.
One of my favorite bands.
That guitar is just amazing throughout the song! Fantastic!
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!
Thanks so much for listening to this band. I knew you would like it.
The great Sonic Youth ! Thurston Moore the guitarist is a true lover of feedback and is a very cool dude. I knew you’d love this band. Great reaction.

Another new one to me. I am THERE for it. This has a wonderful punk vibe. I can tell DS9 is into it. So am I.
More No Wave than Punk! 'Daydream Nation' is a double album that rarely touches on anything you would call Punk!
When Neil Young did the Weld Tour, He chose Sonic Youth to open.
Check out the song that inspired this riff: Freak Scene by Dinosaur Jr. For more Sonic Youth, my favorites are Rain On Tin, Sugar Kane, Bull in the Heather, and The Diamond Sea
Dinosaur JR fucking sucked.

would love to see more sonic youth, one of the all time most innovative rock bands
normally I'm not in to videos for these song reactions, but the video for this one is a riot like a collage of video clips of whatever.

Great comment, couldn’t agree more.

"Sugar Kane", " Bull in the Heather", "Kool Thing", " Bubblegum", and "Teresa's Sound World"
this Sonic Youth song is very much like The Velvet Underground with Lou Reed

@@vegdagol2843 basically any track from Raw Power and especially Fun House is gonna do it.
@@Hartlor_TayleyWell. Then there's L.A. Blues 💥🎷🎤🤕
Death Trip. It's eerie but it really rocks😵☠️
I think this genre is called Sonic Youth.
Can confirm. It is.
Underrated genre...

Kim Gordon is a great bassist.
Super brilliant band. You need to
Check out the rest of this masterpiece album!
I think I had the same look and moves you did upon first hearing this!
You may wish to react to Sonic Youth's 'Tunic (Song for Karen)' about Karen Carpenter from the Goo album.
They covered a carpenters song.
@@Hartlor_Tayley I did not know that, so I just now found and listened to 'Superstar.' Very well done! Thanks!
@@stevecurtis9886 it was part of a compilation of Carpenters covers by many bands. Sonic Youth was the stand out track.

if you have the time "the diamond sea" is an experience
The commenters here are revealing their youth, Sonic or otherwise :) Good stuff.
Cool Thing on Goo is beyond creative, in an eff-you sort of way.
You always do great job.
I can hear this track in that Indie flick “Trainspotting”. It’s about teenage heroin addicts.
The greatest band to never make it big.
Definitely check out Dinosaur Jr. See what Sonic Youth were singing about.
Eastern Light by Mad River 1968 ..... 8:03 minutes long , lol
Daydream nation is a fab album.
Check out Goo.
you might enjoy Pavement and Teenage fan club if you like this.

Well, we used to call it alternative or Alt rock.
you should check out malibu gas station by them
Maybe react to swlabr by cream
I thought you knew this band! You worked in "Dirty Boots" video, for god's sake!
Velvet underground -> television -> sonic Youth -> nirvana
