High surf is bringing the return of King tides to San Diego County this week, prompting high surf and coastal flooding advisories for San Diego's coastline.
What are King tides?
"A king tide is a non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides. Tides are long-period waves that roll around the planet as the ocean is "pulled" back and forth by the moon's and the sun's gravitational pull as these bodies interact with the Earth in their monthly and yearly orbits," according to the National Ocean Service.

FYI, that wall was built in 1928 after floods in the early 20's demolished structures and created severe flooding. It is built on piling that go to bedrock and has a concrete lip that is designed to repel waves back toward the ocean.
