You need a cheese sandwich and some tea for going through the canals. Good to see so much help at the locks and that they have safety gear, would be no fun to fall into turbulent fresh water.
I climbed Ben Nevis about 33 years ago. Started out as a lovely day but clouded over and then started raining about 3/4 of the way up and rained all the way back down. Soaked to the skin and freezing, and that was in July. That was a tough day. You got lucky.
Sam you are always a true inspiration. My wife and I cruised for 14 years. The fact that you do this solo are lost on most people. I don't think I have the strength that I could do this. I cruised for 3 months stretches' solo and found that enough of solitude. I wish you the best of luck and always here if you have questions. I am a very good mechanic and know vessel construction vey wheel
My work college and a few in there group climbed snowdonia, scarfell, and ben nevis in july and cycled the route between each mountain for charity. We dont realise just how beautiful this country really is.
Great video. I wasn't aware that the top of Ben Nevis is so stark. Meeting up with NBJS has to be a highlight too. He must have some great stories to tell. Safe travels!
Amazing you were in my home town and going up Neptune’s staircase wish I knew you were there would of brought you some haggis Sam 😁 and then to head to haugesand to meet Eric absolutely priceless 💪👍 love your videos 😃
Sam, I am an old seasoned sailor, and you never cease to astound me with your skills. If I were a billionaire, I would want you to be my right hand guy. But you are so much better than this 55 year old man. Not just the sailing, but the 3d printing, the gliding, the drone piloting, the slack line walking, and the numorous musical instruments that you play like Mozart. I would not call you anything but a prodigy of brilliance. Thank you for making my days at home feel more like sailing days.
Respect, negotiating Neptune’s staircase and climbing Ben Nevis. Looking forward to seeing rest of Caledonian canal. Would be great if you can meet-up with ‘no bullshit just sailing’ he does some awesome voyages. Keep on sailing. Colin
Great stuff skipper. Ended many walking trips in Fort William, also climbed Ben Nevis about 35 years ago with my Mum...And we're both still here to tell the tale! Fab memories, awesome video and congratulations on your summit! Many thanks as always.
with so many ocean passages and coastal sailing videos I always find it a real treat when someone is travelling through locks and canals. nice video and beautiful hike.
Your looking real happy Sam on this latest sailing trip...glad your getting out to land explore...sailing seems to be one of the best ways too see more of the world.
Wow, what a flashback! Pop Pop and I did the locks many years ago-to Edinburgh! You dad helped us get tickets to the Tatoo! Great memories you have opened for me! 😍
Love the videos, I wish I could do something half as amazing as this every day but I wouldn't even know where to begin but love to see your voyages, safe travels Sam!!! ⛵🏝
I loved your trip thru the locks! Thanks for sharing the trip. And cool, you met up with my Viking "Cousin", Erik,... although my ancestors were Swedish sailors. Both of you guys are 'no bullshit folks' and that's what I and probably everyone else here appreciate about you.
Totally awesome as always. I do a fair amount of hiking and I had a good chuckle when those two guys carrying mountain bikes past you. It reminded me of a hike I did with my son and daughter in our local mountains. We had paused to catch our breath when a very very old man came flying by us smiling as he said 'how ya doing?". My daughter and I just looked at each other in disbelief.
Hello Sam good to see you enjoying a good hike beautiful scenery especially the clouds in the valley below too bad you couldn't find a landing spot for your paraglider and take it with you and lie down and land you might not be allowed to in that area maybe a little dangerous but I was a wonderful view up high I miss being up in the mountains myself anyways be safe God bless you Sam will be waiting for your next video Ray Garrett from Roseville California USA
Hey Sam, I found your channel from Eric so that worked ;-) I hiked Ben Nevis on July 24, one of the hottest days of the year, at 27C (~80F) it was brutal!!
Great video. Carrying bikes up the mountain? Must have missed the bike trail down the mountain!! I've traveled through there, always looking up at those hills rising up out of the valley. Spectacular views all around. Great memories. Thanks for sharing.
That’s hilarious, you’ve doing so many of the same things I’ve done. I ran up and down Ben Nevis in just under the qualifying time for the race - not that I was there for that.
Very cool video, I grew up along the Hudson River and near one of the locks. Spent a lot of my childhood at the lock watching yachts and Oil barges lock through. Can you do another video of it at normal speed, would love to see more of the area. Your the best!!!! Rob
Hey Sam! Great hike man! Please do a live with NBJS! I really enjoy when you guys get together. Great sailing channels and specially you both solo sailors sharing solo war stories. If you do a live around solo sailing it would be epic!
It's gonna be a great day starting with Sam💯thanks for sharing and taking us along💯 grateful for these videos💯stay safe Sam💯🙏👍that Cape Dory is a heck of a boat 💯 AWESOME VIEWS
Great to see you met up with Erik. Maybe you can convince him to sail down to the Mediterranean - race from Gibraltar to the Greek island of Mykonos - loser buys the winner a bottle of seven star Metaxa.....
Search for the Lord of the Glen's cruise ship, it's the biggest boat that can fit in the locks, it was cut in the rear some 20 years ago so it would fit.
Sam, you picked the absolute best day for the Ben Nevis assent. There are many Scots (myself included) who have never seen it so clear.
Beginners luck!
@@samholmessailing plus you made that climb up Ben Nevis look so effortless well done 👍 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@samholmessailing The alchemist ;) glad you read the book
Too true
You need a cheese sandwich and some tea for going through the canals. Good to see so much help at the locks and that they have safety gear, would be no fun to fall into turbulent fresh water.
Some of the best scenery in the World!!! As seen thru your eyes....and ours!!!
Thanks for sharing! Fun to cross paths with Erik! I follow you both with great admiration!

you are going to have so many stories to tell your grand kids.
thnx for another great video.
Best way to start the day, a new Sam Holmes Sailing video!
Great video just what's needed in the winter months Thanks for doing them Ledgend
It's fantastic to see the places that Cape Dory is taking you. From your shop in NC to the top of a mountain in Scotland. Outstanding.
I love that girl’s accent. Also, I’ve gotten addicted to this channel. Thanks for the content
You can tell she steals hearts and causes traffic accidents, without trying..

Very cool to see the locks, thanks Sam!
That was fab! Love your videos - Ben Nevis was looking amazing!
Eric from NBJS is a wild man!
You two are my favorite sailing channels right now.
So excellent you're meeting up with Erik. How about a sailboat race but you have to wait for a force 10 storm! 😂
Great stuff as always Sam!
You should strap the go pro at different locations on the boat so we can see more raw sailing footage. Thanks Sam!

Wow! That stair step trail going up 4,000 ft is amazing. Thanks for sharing!
My work college and a few in there group climbed snowdonia, scarfell, and ben nevis in july and cycled the route between each mountain for charity. We dont realise just how beautiful this country really is.
It is always impressive, that every place you go, there are people, that come out, to help you. Good deal.
You are officially Sailing Royalty now Sam. Moored on the bow of NBJS Tessie.
Great video. I wasn't aware that the top of Ben Nevis is so stark. Meeting up with NBJS has to be a highlight too. He must have some great stories to tell. Safe travels!
Sam, this was my favorite chapter of the adventures of Sam Holmes!! Fantastic.
Amazing you were in my home town and going up Neptune’s staircase wish I knew you were there would of brought you some haggis Sam 😁 and then to head to haugesand to meet Eric absolutely priceless 💪👍 love your videos 😃

That mountain looks great for some gliding 🪂. Beautiful area by the way
One of my favorite sailing channels. Keep up the good work. Aloha.
Thanks for all the effort. The locks are something I have been waiting to see you pass through.
Just gone through the Swedish locks it was nice to see how this worked! I must have been nice that there was stuff to help out when doing it alone!
Yes the lock operators were very helpful. Are the locks in Sweden similar?
Thanks for taking us along Sam!
with so many ocean passages and coastal sailing videos I always find it a real treat when someone is travelling through locks and canals. nice video and beautiful hike.
Loved the scenery through the canal and the hike.
Awesome watching this from the other direction. We came down the canal in a catamaran from Inverness.
Great video. Nice looking ketch ahead in the canal. Looks old school. Reminds me of the Trent waterway in canada
There's something so soothing about raw sailing footage...
Keep up the good work sam! Wishing you fair winds⛵️🌊
Your looking real happy Sam on this latest sailing trip...glad your getting out to land explore...sailing seems to be one of the best ways too see more of the world.
That was awesome thanks Sam
Sam, you packed a ton of travel into this 7 minute travelogue. Looking forward to the rest of Scotland! Fair winds my friend.
Wow, what a flashback! Pop Pop and I did the locks many years ago-to Edinburgh! You dad helped us get tickets to the Tatoo! Great memories you have opened for me! 😍
Sam, amazing trip through the canal. The hike was beautiful and wow what incredible views. 👍⛵️⛵️⛵️🥰
Cool to see Pickled Herring mooring right next to Erik's NBJS sailing boat. Soul brothers meeting each other, I guess!
great to see a diff side of adventure sailing, i really love the serene canals.. it is great to see you continue to travel the world. Thank You!
Spectacular! Thanks for sharing as always
Fair do's to you mate! You have courage and determination and much respect to you! You're a nice guy as well!
Thanks Sam all the best stay safe 👍 Cheers 🥃🥃
Sam, brilliant video! Hiking Ben Nevis on a.clear day? Unheard of! ;-) The locks are cool I did a few in Prague. Great fun. Keep 'em coming.
The cloud-bound Ben Nevis summit looked a lot like the Mount Snowden summit when I visited Wales a couple of years ago. 👍
Love the videos, I wish I could do something half as amazing as this every day but I wouldn't even know where to begin but love to see your voyages, safe travels Sam!!! ⛵🏝
You can do it!
Great video today Sam!This is the first I've seen of the Caledonian locks.Cant wait to see more.
I loved your trip thru the locks! Thanks for sharing the trip. And cool, you met up with my Viking "Cousin", Erik,... although my ancestors were Swedish sailors. Both of you guys are 'no bullshit folks' and that's what I and probably everyone else here appreciate about you.
Getting my canal boating and sailing watching all at once now!
Awesome. I have been waiting for this video for a couple weeks now.
Loved it.
Oh my god Sam. I'm really, really enjoying these videos. I feel like you're a friend of mine. Love it man, keep it going.
Hahaha. My son and his buddy just climbed Mt. Whitney. Up the Mountaineers Trail and down the regular route. Lots of snow and ice.
Dream route through there, love it!
Welcome to Fort William hope you enjoyed it, should have popped round for a cup of tea
Big thumbs up for an Ben Nevis segment.
Really enjoy watching your adventures Sam…👍🍻

All our BBQ friends are sailing all over....last week we had French Canadian Folks....be safe my brother...
Thanks for the great footage.
Great stuff. Someday we hope to follow in your foot steps.

Holy crap Sam this is incredible.

I was expecting you to do a paraglide down that mountain. Better go back and make it happen!
Great video Sam. Had you considered paragliding off Ben Nevis.? That would top everything.!
This is cool it kinda reminds me of the Ballard locks in Seattle where I live nearby
I thought the same thing! Used to have a boat in Lake Union.
@@sdflyer1672 Nice!
Fellow-Seattleites! Represent. :)
Good lunch break video.
living the dream. I hope one day I am able to do this too.
Brings back many memories, hope the experience was positive

Great to see you met up with Erik. Maybe you can convince him to sail down to the Mediterranean - race from Gibraltar to the Greek island of Mykonos - loser buys the winner a bottle of seven star Metaxa.....
Sam, doing great. Will you slow down your scenery shots just a bit? It's nice to see your surroundings. Just a thought. Stay safe.
Welcome to Norway 👋
Thanks
Hello from South Carolina. Aiken.
That was cool thanks
Ben Nevis and NBJS great episode.
Ben Nevis reminds me of the top of Mt. Washington, NH...just need more wind...😂
Are the line-handlers paid employees of the canal system, volunteers or just tourists who happen to be there?
You're ready for the Great Loop after doing all those locks
the cool stuff we dont see in the US..good video
That’s a pretty cool canal system, you didn’t even have to demast your boat. I wonder if theirs a width restriction?
Search for the Lord of the Glen's cruise ship, it's the biggest boat that can fit in the locks, it was cut in the rear some 20 years ago so it would fit.
Great videos
