Hello lovelies,
Today I will be showing you what's inside Marilyn Monroes Handbag.
A chocolate brown 1950s alligator handbag with an interior stamp that reads, "I. Magnin & Co." as well as a metal insignia mounted to the inside of the bag with lions flanking a crest that reads "Elegance" and a banner that reads "Evans" below. The handbag features gold metal hardware and burgundy leather interior with purpose-built pockets to accommodate matching accessories, including faux tortoise plastic comb, matching leather covered gold metal flint lighter, matching lipstick case containing an unused stick of bright red lipstick, and a matching leather powder compact with mirror.

I had the exact white, wizard beaded bag from imagnins!-and gave it away! Wow! Also, my mother was interviewed about the history of Imagnins on KCET. You can look it up. It is now part of a law school, but 1x a month they open the tearoom for tea!

How come a lot of cosmetic companies don’t package like this anymore??? I’d love to buy classy elegant cosmetics like this. I’m 45 years old and remember my grandmothers beauty stuffs and never appreciated it back in the 80’s and 90’s and early 2000’s but now I’m literally trying to buy similar items she used to own. All of those items back in the day were really beautiful and elegant.
Wow besame nailed their Marilyn Monroe lipstick component. Didn’t know it was modeled after a revlon tube.

Would be nice. I think Audrey Hepburn started the design for the Louis Vuitton speedy and I know that grace Kelly had the Hermés Kelly named after her after being seen using it to cover her baby bump when she was pregnant
Having grown up in the early sixties, I remember ladies using the tiny clasp cigarette cases and they had a coin purse with the snap closure as well. They also wore a type of black flat pointed shoe that was very low cut to see some of their toes!! The beehive hairdo was all the rage and ladies would go to the supermarket with large rollers and a scarf to cover their rollers. Hair was teased and hairspray was a necessity. Almost everyone smoked as you can see from old Hollywood movies and they carried cigarette cases and matches from various restaurants and bars. I miss those glamorous years.

When I lived in San Francisco, I shopped at I Magnin a lot. It was considered Retail Royalty and was a fine department store.
Marilyn's marriage to Joe is supposed to have ended, because he was physically violent with her. He was too jealous.
Make up products were just so much better back then. Like the cases and all.

Hi Laura. Love seeing all the beauty vintage has to offer. I strongly believe women in the 40's and 50's had more style and attitude. There was a confidence and quality that is so difficult to find these days. There is so much technology but I believe many of us are in love with that allure of the past. I know I am. My mother had alligator and crocodile shoes and purses in the 1950s. They were expensive then. They're a lot more expensive now.

I have the exact same brown bag without knowing Marilynn also owned it!! I think I got this from a vintage store in Brooklyn a while ago! I love these kind of surprises!! The bag is actually really old and I can no longer use it but I used to heavily use it before. I'm going to display it nicely knowing that Marilyn also had this bag! I'm so glad to find this video! Back then smoking was common, even doctors told their patients that smoking was fine and would even smoke with them. If you ever watch the show mad men, there was smoking (even drinking) in the office, at restaurants, even pregnant woman were smoking back then. My parents have Told me stories about how easily accessible cigarettes were. Parents send kids to the stores with money and a note. For cigarettes. It was common and legal.

Oh Laura , do love your channel so !. I do have a pic of Marilyn with a cigarette. And I always loved that square perspex box bag she had in Niagara . I did get to see one of her dresses , the black fringe one from Some like it hot at the MOMI museum . You could almost put your fingers thru the guard in an attempt to touch it but alas , you can really tell how small in height she was.
I've loved Marilyn since I was 11 and I'm 38 now, love at first sight. I remember my mum was watching a MM movie and I asked her who the pretty lady was. Then at 16 I discovered Sharon Tate, two of the most beautiful women both inside and out. I'm more of a goth type girl, but enjoy seeing what was used back then. Make-up especially was made so much nicer then. (I also love Natalie Wood, Brigitte Bardot etc but MM and Sharon are my top two lol)

She was very much a casual smoker - there are lots of pictures of her smoking if you search for them! Great concept for a video, you have a great collection.
I saw an episode of antiques roadshow that featured a couple of "minauderies". The compact with lipstick and powder and cigarette compartment with a chain reminds me of the minauderies. Ofcourse those had some real jewel encrustments and were worth a ton.

I have this same book from Christie's! I was going to tell you that you should absolutely get it! I bought it on eBay, for about 50$ CA, 20 years ago. Where did you take yours?
I saw Monroe smoking in one old video - but she kept it by her side so it was out of sight. Dimaggio took care of her after death and it was rumored they were going to remarry before her death.

Laura, where did you get your jewelry?
There are loads of photos of Marilyn smoking in the 50s. I think it was social smoking and she seems to have stopped by the 60s.
They must have been so heavy to carry. All the products are made 9f substantial metals and decorated, and the bags alone are heavy.
