Thank you for this great video and for the enlightenment! Always wanted to know what kind of games were there on that computer. Turned out they were great! Loved all of them and I might go for emulation. Even though it's a Japanese computer seems most games were in English. Especially loved music from "The Scheme" and the game Silpheed. But I'm surprised "Zeliard" is not among your favorites. It's a great action-rpg game that initially was released for this computer and later ported to DOS.
Funny how half of the games have absolutely awful sound, while the other half has the relatively advanced FM synth that the PC88 (and later PC98) was known for.
Sierra computing. The makers of King's Quest advertised and created the english version of Thexder for early games using the same computing language for their 'quest' games. :3
The Thexder music great, but sounds so preliminary. The complementary melody was just added in the American versions? Along with the Moonlight Sonata at the title screen? Someone at Sierra was a good musician!
Wow this machine really impresses me, Gradius, Thexder, Wibarm , Vootoy, SIlpheed, DoorDoor, Hover Attack and The Scheme are probably the best games showed here...the marios are not so good (even I don't like that character LOL) but this machine is good to get it's now on my wish list alongside with his games...this will be good looking along with all other 8/16/32 BITS I Will buy :D
I am having trouble of finding this game on PC 8801. There was one game on PC 8801 where there was this character climes up the tree to collect things and fight varies enemies all the way to the top. Then he had to clime all the way to bottom in order to win or pass to a next level. Can anyone tell me the name of this game? been looking for it for years!
Marc Campbell I wish it was but unfortunately no. The character has to keep climbing a tree in order to reach all the way to the top and then climb down. While he is climbing, enemies are attacking him and you have to keep on dodging them. It was one a very difficult game as far as I remember. But thanks for trying to find the game for me.
***** In my opinion, the NES is bad but when Konami did the VRC chips they maked more decent (or even excellent) soundtracks, the SMS chip is awful, and the genesis is not a everytime good working thing. Also the IBM doesn't really count, because that's what is, a beeper, a lot of machines had it back in the day and maked you to buy sound generators or sound cards
That's because the earlier models of the PC-88 had to use built in bleeps and bloops to play their sound. This is the best they could do. Later models had a very nice Yamaha FM synth chip... that's why games like Wibarm had actual music.
1981 you say? Well according to WP the machine that could run these games came 1985... 1982 came the C64... now my question is, why didnt NEC learn from there?
RPGs, AVGs (i.e., adventure games), and SIMs were what this platform excelled at, NOT arcade shooters like Gradius as it handled screen scrolling and background sprite quite horribly esp. when compared to much cheaper Famicom (Nintendo) back then. Black Onyx, Mugen no Shinzou, Ohotsuku ni Kiyu, Nobunaga no Yabo.... those were the days.
There lies the true reason people put effort into emulation this system all the eroge, Bishōjo games, and Visual novels that were made for this series of computer
first of all get M88KAI+ then go to internet archive and search for neo kobes pc88 collection its the fasterst way to get preaty mutch all of the pc88 games the emulator is easy to handle if you want to savestate its alt plus f10 and to load that state its alt plaus f1 only one state also in this list he only shows early pc88 games and like the 2 mario games fuck that better play stuff like valis 2 or dios or xak or XZR not to mention the falcom stuff and the amazing adventure games like PSY O BLADE so yeah i recomend research the pc88 theres alot of amazing games on it this video is preaty misleanding unless its for the V1 and makes it look like a lame european computer fuck, this comment il long but you get it already also PC88 has like best pixelart ever.
***** Oh sorry, I'm not very familiar with IBM computers... But I am mildly familiar with the PC-88, PC-98 and a little familiar with the SharpX68k and FMtowns... I mean, more than when I made that comment...
Japan casually uses English in a way that the US does not - even to this day you can browse random stores targeted at Japan only and they'll have random English in them. Example: www.rakuten.co.jp

What about Ys?
Funny how half of the games have absolutely awful sound, while the other half has the relatively advanced FM synth that the PC88 (and later PC98) was known for.
There were ads for this in all the US magazines, and I really wanted it. It wasn't unknown in the US at all.
Silpheed looks spectacular!
This is some nostalgic sheet! Sounds very close to NES sound card.
Hudson Soft was a Japanese company that made a lot of games for NEC computers/video game consoles.
Compare this Thexder with the MSX version and it's almost identical. Note that Door Door was also released for the MSX :)
Sierra computing. The makers of King's Quest advertised and created the english version of Thexder for early games using the same computing language for their 'quest' games. :3
How could you forgot Snatcher?!
The Scheme has nice music. Still, why no Ys?
This is very ambitious for 1981. That's VIC20 era.
The Thexder music great, but sounds so preliminary. The complementary melody was just added in the American versions? Along with the Moonlight Sonata at the title screen? Someone at Sierra was a good musician!

I'm missing Zeliard though.
Have you checked out the simulation & adventure games made for it btw? Also have you heard of it's successor the PC-9801 by anychance?
I can easily tell that WIBARM is one of the best games ever made
Horacio Ferreira WIBARM is metal!!!
Broderbund released a DOS port of WIBARM in 1989.
Never heard of this before. Interesting.
Gradius :D In this version you, can you input the konami code???
It is a pity that "The Scheme" music is not SoundBoard II (OPNA).
Thexder and The Scheme would have been awesome on an NES/Famicom.
This machine was as good or better than everything else on the market in North America at the time, but it was just too damn expensive.
Any guess why nintendo licensed their games on thr pc8801 system? Because the famicom was allready released.
The original Mario Bros. game is on many platforms, there were 2 official releases on the Commodore 64!

Sounds a bit like Popful Mail

possibly NewTron
Mr.Logic23 sounds like Stage 1 of Legend of Kage.
Why are the games in English if it was only released for Japan..
Wow wow wow. Why does Gradius suddenly sound so much better? Even better than NES.
Moonlight Sonata, nice.
yes it's so powerfull that some games had only 7 colors
Some of these games really has some thought put into the music
And then some of them sounds worse than the fucking atari consoles
+marcus glahder Mhe sound it's not bad, the wors for me is the NES sound chip...it sucks ass...

確か ドアドアは ゲームコンテストで 大賞して中学生が作ったゲームでしたっけ?
高校3年の時の中村光一らしいですよ。

very cool
1981 you say? Well according to WP the machine that could run these games came 1985...

THEY SHOULD RELEASE ALL THESE GAMES ON PSN IN A COLLECTION WITH TROPHIES
My guess is: Uootoy is deffo a toy Stimpy with hero-helicopter addon and added schizophrenic problems. If I met him in RL, I'd run for my life.
Forgot... 1985 the Amiga 1000 made its debut. :)
please can anyone tell me where to find pc-88 emulator that works
fan subs. these computers were not even IBM compatible so even if you could get the software shipped to the us it would not run on your IBM pc
do you know anything about a game called Porno Party - Sailor Fuku to Yakyuken: The Yakyuken Game for this
god some of these games sound like pop station games
RPGs, AVGs (i.e., adventure games), and SIMs were what this platform excelled at, NOT arcade shooters like Gradius as it handled screen scrolling and background sprite quite horribly esp. when compared to much cheaper Famicom (Nintendo) back then. +SokoFan - Emulator

Whoa, Wibarm is Thexder, only weird.
Only awesome, a 3D game!
One does not simply walk into Doordoor
Looks really primitive... But There's some pretty impressive games on this PC huh? compared to the others on the same PC at least...
***** Oh sorry, I'm not very familiar with IBM computers... But I am mildly familiar with the PC-88, PC-98 and a little familiar with the SharpX68k and FMtowns...

You forgot adult games.
8-bit (in Japan) = MSX >>>>>>>> PC-88
I think SMB Special is better than all these games.
Doordoor OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFF
