This is the second video in a series of 5 on tonal values. I’ve created this series for Royal Talens, a renowned art supplies company based in the Netherlands. I’ll be sharing these videos weekly here on my channel. Here’s the release schedule:
Video 1 November 1: The Importance of Grey (Introduction to Tonal Values) ua-cam.com/video/_xJiHxcoJTQ/v-deo.html
Video 2 November 8: Paint an Apple in Nine Tonal Values
Video 3 November 15: Tonal Value Study of a Statue
Video 4 November 22: Grisaille (Underpainting in Greyscale)
Video 5 November 29: Adding Color Over Grisaille
This series begins with an introduction and then dives into step-by-step, paint-along tutorials designed to help you understand tonal values through practical exercises. I hope you’ll enjoy watching and painting along!

Thank you so much for making available the tonal-step photo and outline sketch! I'm looking forward to painting along with you on this one. 😊

Digging out from 60 inches of snowfall in three days. Good time to observe tonal values in degrees of black and white. Thanks Toon. I'll have to paint later but nice listening as well.

Great job illustrating the concept of tonal values. You are bringing it! So far it seems to be more related to shadows and light direction. Is that the point?

Yes, that's a big part of the tonal value 'story' and I thought that this was a good way to start, with a rather 'simple' object. In the next video we take a look at a more complex object. And of course colors themselves have values as well. In general blue is dark and yellow is light for instance, but you never know, sometimes light and shadow can do very interesting things 😂👍🎨

Im going to try this. What size is your canvas? Thanks!

      It's 40 x 30 cm (so I guess about 15.7 x 11.8 inches). Enjoy painting!👍🎨

I'm getting very frustrated with acrylic paint drying up on the palet! I'm using the same paint and am actually painting faster than you do but the paint does not seem to dry with you and youre not even using water. Any tips?

Yes I do have tips! This is 100% the most frequently asked question, so I've made a blog about this topic: www.toon-nagtegaal.com/blogs/2119012_increase-drying-time-of-acrylics I hope it's helpful!👍👍

@@toon-nagtegaalIt is from you, Toon, that I learned to put out more paint on my palette and to not let it get spread out too thinly after mixing. Thanks! (I live in a hot and arid climate and am slightly jealous of your longer working times.)

@@jondoh587 I can imagine that's quite a challenge when painting with acrylics! 👍👍
