I was about to add this video to the playlist "Watch it later" and then I realized the irony
ahaha ;)
Only a few minutes in and I'm nodding along, there's a difference between being passive in life and being active.
When i find myself procrastinating for extended time periods, usually due to depression (or sometimes just simply laziness) i find breaking my time up into small chunks with a timer really helps. I.e. "five minutes of work" or "a ten minute power clean" and once that lazy seal is broken i usually just keep going, it's the gathering momentum in the first place that requires the most effort for sure!
+Elaine Carroll yeah I think you're right, getting started is often the most difficult so finding a way to ease on like small spurts is great to build up the momentum!
Jean Bookishthoughts pushing past the inertia is definitely the hardest :) then it's like Newton said, we'll keep going until something external distracts us 😁😁
True! I am an artist and indeed, the only way to find inspiration is to sit down at a scheduled time and start working.
:D
I find myself distracted even when watching youtube videos, how ever will get any actual studying done.. Visual distractions are a great aide for procrastination. I watched this on full screen while stretching and actually watched it from beginning to end in one go. Someone give me a white cube with nothing but a book, a pen and somewhere to sit. :D
Aha I need one too!
for people who don't like classical music, may I suggest : electronic music ! Often times there are no voices and the patterns are quite repetitive which makes it easier to stay focussed on your task
I've found that using the Pomodoro technique works really well for procrastination: 25 minutes of intense work with a 5 minute break. Works great for me because I'm a smoker so the break's a perfect length but I know lots of non smoking friends who swear by this too.
I do agree with film scores to keep you motivated too. Any film that Nick Cave & Warren Ellis have done the score to are usually perfect.
I have finished college, but I still found this video helpful. I have to schedule time to do errands, time to do house chores, time to plan videos and write reviews, or I would just watch youtube and read all day after work lol.
I'm so glad to hear it! I totally agree, these kind of skills are all round life skills, uni isn't the only time you need to focus.
Great video, I loved your advices! Priorities are so important!
Thanks :D glad to hear you enjoyed it.
Great tips, definitely going to use lord of the rings music. I also find that if I am having a very crappy concentration for whatever reason, i would do more mechanical tasks like formatting my references or organizing my samples, formatting my figures, that sort of thing. I find it soothing and helps me ease myself into more complex tasks, while still being productive.
Some times I make so many plans I forgot to plan time to execute them xP
I actually do the opposite with small tasks vs. big tasks - if I do all the easy stuff first the big, difficult things seems less overwhelming.
I think it depends. I'll do my emails first because they are easy but also necessary. What I had in mind was spending hours doing a deep wardrobe clear out when that can wait only to wake up the next day one day closer to your essay deadline with one day less time to do it that you could have used. Or things like do you need to film that youtube video before finishing that report, which will be worse if you don't get done? I guess that's what I mean.
Haha yeah that's the weirdest form of procrastinating, like cleaning your entire flat instead of studying.
I love classical music so that distracts me, what I use is nature sounds on Spotify or UA-cam.
I wish this video existed when I was at Uni :) Anyway, I enjoyed watching it and I think it will be really helpful to some people!
It's great to hear you think it'd be useful though ^_^ thanks!
I'm trying to schedule my time a lot recently mainly cos I need to keep myself busy from being too bored of recovering from my op. Making myself do stuff is basically helping myself to stay sane 😅
I'm the same, I need to have stuff to do!
Ahaha I have written all my first year essays with the hobbit and lotr soundtracks on in the background. Glad I'm not the only one 🙃
I wonder how many essays were written with these soundtracks playing aha - great minds ;).
...well. off i go to film my first booktube video. i think i may need "don't wait for perfection" tattooed on my forehead.
Best piece of advice I could give any new youtuber, if you could see my first videos on my old channel aha. Even on this channel, it takes time to get used to it and find your swing. Good luck!
ohhh i needed this today, i have an exam tomorrow AND HAVEN'T STARTED TO STUDY YET *shame shame shame*
Good luck!
It's interesting watching this Jean as you've come up with lots of ways to prevent procrastination but when I've thought about it myself or even talking to the students I teach it isn't so much about the distractions around me/them being too tempting but the perception that the work will be hard/boring/tiring or even 'not good enough'. Do you think that part of the problem is in how we perceive essays etc. so negatively? Like we lose sight completely about the rewards/confidence boost/ability growth and free time we gain from getting the work done. Personally I've started to believe that a fear of failure is the biggest driver of procrastination.
+Craig Scott it's tricky considering everyone's personal reasons - I love studying, it brings me the most joy out of everything I do and I've found what I passionate about so I've never really considered my research potentially boring, not since I went beyond undergraduate studies and got to focus on my preferred topics but yet I procrastinate. I think fear of difficulty/disinterest is definitely something that causes problems though, outside of studying Im sure I put things off because of difficulty, maybe language studies in fact as they're what I find hardest although I know the value. These are the ways I get myself to do the work though, I can't think how else. I guess I'm assuming people who don't want to procrastinate have already decided they want to do the work. Motivation is perhaps a different issue. ALthough I think I touched on the need for perfection (perhaps similar to fear of failure) at the end - so much more could be said though I'm sure! Interesting to muse on.
Those are very good points! I think the reason for my procrastination is indeed the need to be perfect. But I can't be perfect if I only have a small amount of time, right? So I can be happy if I just get it DONE and it doesn't matter how poorly I actually succeed. If I spend a lot of time for something and fail, then I just feel stupid. This is really the logic for winners, I know! :D
deep breathing through the nose could help also it won't help with not doing the work who what where when why how can help with generate questions to help gather info, gain understanding, create also sometimes just doing it can be good also.Good vids.
Thank you so much for this video
No problem :)
Liked this video to watch it later
good video...thank you!
I have found since having a baby my concentration is shot, any spare minute I feel i either have to use or waste. It's so much pressure isn't it, you feel like you can't have 'time off' but if you don't it's not good for your mental health or wellbeing at all
Oh my gosh yes. I've had to be very strict with myself over the years to remember that time off is equally valuable to study time but that doesn't mean I don't have weeks where I beat myself up and refuse to socialise because if I'm not being productive every hour of the day I'm going to be a failure. Then I just burn out and waste time and beat myself up again aargh. So easy to be sensible and give advice in the abstract but we all get caught up in our own heads. You are amazing though!
Added to my 'to watch' list.
+Shane NT aha hope it proves useful
a new " in my uni bag " video please!
Aha I don't really have a uni bag in the same way though, I have a lot of books at home, and if I go to library I take my laptop and a notebook. I don't go 'into uni' in the same way.
Jean Bookishthoughts oh okay maybe a work bag ?i am not fluent in english sorry
this talk definitely doesn't speak to adhd ;) (before meds that is, or before a lot of pre-work and in a good period during the month...) I find that i procrastinate the most without me being aware of it, I get distracted by something else and before I know it my time is up and I didn't do what I had planned to do. But I sure did something... often also a usefull thing, but not something that will get me to my long term goals.
I'm thinking of getting a 45 second buzzer... but I'm a bit scared that I will get horribly irritated by that thing.
Yeah, the simply "don't procrastinate" advice doesn't work for me, BUT now that I am taking medication and am trying to develop different habits, I'm more able to follow advice like this.
What state do you live Jean?
I'm Scottish not American aha :)
Well, nice to meet you! You're beautiful have a good british accent
