    Just wanted to add, in that Hugo cat 5 mission, NOAA's Orion #42 officially endured a 5.6G event. One of the engines exploded, and had to be shut down, but the rock solid Orion still got everyone back home.
    Prior to that mission, NO hurricane hunter aircraft had ever take more than 3G's.
    NOAA has two Orions - NOAA 42, and NOAA 43.
    Both are still flying missions to this day.

    All they had to do was to tell Katrina, "NO! You do NOT hit New Oreleans (sic). NO! *Bad* hurricane. BAD hurricane!!!"
    And then Hurricane Katrina would have stopped, considered what it was about to do, and reversed direction.

    Thanks for the video bnvn1
    Off hand, after last Fridays (05/31/2013) tornado hunter deaths, do you know if any hurricane hunters have crashed / died due to hurricane hunting? ty

    Todays fiction becomes tomorrows headlines. Maybe in the future... Just look at technology today (2013) compared to 1980 when the transistor was allowed to be developed after Charlie Brown (no, not of Snoopy fame) divested Bell Telephone system.

    You DO realize that the Hurricane Hunters is under the Air Force Reserves, right?

    • @SkyChaserCom
      @SkyChaserCom 2 роки тому

      There are 2 hurricane hunters. One is Air Force reserve under the 53rd weather recon squadron (flying WC130s) and the other under the US department of commerce (NOAA) which is civilian / government. The Gulfstream Jet, and two WP3 Orions operate under the latter.

    @bishop51807 Did I ever say anything about the equipment or the USN not having weather programs? NOAA pilots are too scared to even dare enter a cat III so they just gather what they can from Radar.
