I have recently moved from a medium sized coastal town in NSW to larger coastal town in Queensland.
At my previous archery club we had a membership of about 40 and the focus was in getting new people into the sport. We would hold an open day about every two months where we could accommodate about 50 people in two sessions of about two hours each. We would provide all equipment, mostly recurves and Mathews Genesis bows but we also had some compounds set up for those that showed interest. We also gave everyone a can of drink, a sausage sandwich cooked on our BBQ and charged each of them $20 to cover lost and broken arrows plus target wear. Our open days were always booked out early and we gained new members from most open days. Obviously this was not a commercial venture as it relied on club members to volunteer their time to supervise the attendees but it demonstrates there are plenty of people that would try the sport if they had the chance. We held club shoots every two weeks with good attendances but the focus was not serious competition, just having fun and our working bee's would usually attract about 20 members.
When I moved to Queensland I joined the local archery club which had amazing facilities, both outdoor ranges and indoor. They shoot most weekends, unless there is an ABA shoot in the adjoining districts in which case they close the range. They also shoot indoor two nights a week. The club has a strong focus on competitions. They encourage new members by having a come and try night each week but it is not advertised so only attracts people through word of mouth. The club struggles to get members to step up to committee positions due to the massive workload created by holding so many shooting days and the constant preparation for upcoming tournaments, some having over a hundred visitors attending. Some working bee's only attract a few members and most working bee's are focussed on preparing the course for the next major competition.
Two very different approaches for an archery club but if the aim is to get more people into the sport I don't think competitions are the answer. Almost without exception the reaction from people shooting their first arrows was priceless and and a high percentage would return, many would also buy their own gear. With the right exposure archery could be huge in Australia just like it is in parts of the US but I think it is the fun side that needs to be pushed more than the competition side. Once you get people into the sport those that want to compete will do so. I have been shooting arrows for about 60 years and still do it because I like it, not because I have anything to prove.

Driving 2 hours here in the UK would either get you to the other side of the country or 300m down the road depending on the traffic that day.
Land prices around here are stupid... Its prime farming land.
    A 10 acre field costs £50,000 - £100,000.
Our archery club wants it's own land, but it's just too darn expensive.

Hi Steve. Malcolm from Geelong Archers here. Just for information, the National Championships structure is changing dramatically. I had several years out of the sport and shot my first Nationals in over 2 decades in 2019. In many respects this was the same format as the "old days" with target, field and clout. They were reasonably well attended with about 180 archers attending. The various events had lower numbers than that as not everyone shot all the events with the Short Target being the best attended. Those numbers compared favourably with the numbers from my earlier life. I think the biggest Nationals I attended was in Melbourne with 186 entries. Over Covid, obviously Nationals couldn't go ahead. In 2022 and 2023 the Target Nationals were run as per your description. At the Senior Nationals last year there were around 245 entries and this year it was up to 286. Again not all archers entered all events with the 900 round being the best attended with nearly 250 entries. So from a senior target national point of view the move has been successful with record numbers. In 2022 and 2023, the U14 and U16 went to a postal format. This was done largely as the costs were seen as prohibitive for Juniors. Next year, as you should be aware as it was in an Archery Australia newsletter, the Youth Target Nationals are coming back for U14, U16, U18 and U21. In addition U18 and U21 will also be able to compete at the Senior Nationals. So, there are actually more opportunities to shoot!! You will also be aware that field is now seperated from the Target. My club hosted the first seperate National Field this year. It was a roaring success. The Field Nationals is now a full age group event, with all age groups from U14 through to 70+. We had to limit entries, we could have filled the field twice over.We ended up with 120 entries. Overall, the new formats, in my view have been a roaring success. The target events in QLD were, as I have told others, the best archery events I have ever attended and SQAS and Samford Valley should be very proud of what they put on. With regard to clout, I checked and back in 2019 less than half of the entrants shot clout. The big problem with clout is that there would be very few clubs (certainly this the case in Victoria) where we can shoot clout. So requiring the hosts to do clout severely limits the number of potential hosts. I was on the organising committee of the 1985 Nationals. Back then we also had a flight event. The 2 events that required the most work to organise were the 2 with lowest attendance, clout and flight. I spent a considerable amount of time communicating with Archery Australia in the lead up to us hosting the Field Nationals, and overall I was impressed with their vision and thought. Yes there are issues, but I think we are on the right track overall. With regard to the teams, we did have State Based teams shooting in the 2 target events (1440 and 900), I was lucky enough to be selected in Vic team and we won. And yes there was prize money available in the Matchplay event at the Target Nationals $1050 first prize in all individual events and a bow!

Great video everything you say is so relevant. I have been involved with a number of clubs over the years. You are totally correct that people shoot because they enjoy it. Those that want to win and be serious can be, however they represent the minority of participants in the big picture. Competition is about self improvement not winning. Some experience: One club the “elite” treated everyone like the underclass, people would join the club to enjoy the sport and social side but soon left as the atmosphere pretty much sucked. Another club in its day, a masters club, very successful, introduced a membership policy that you MUST compete in 3 external carnivals/events per year - that’s a full day. They lost 40% of the membership that year. In this club there were 2 “training” sessions per week. 1 hour training and everyone hung back for 2 hours social time…… explains a lot. Another club who lost its main membership driver now has no membership building policies in place for juniors or seniors with reduced social activity and the numbers are falling away as much as 50% for each division. Post event social side has seen numbers drop by 90%. In my limited experience people do a sport because they enjoy it and has a social side. Sure, promote competition and that will improve the individual’s performance, however people like to be social and have an enjoyable experience.

I would definitely bite the bullet and do it Steven.
But that is me, you have so many commitments to your business already, so it has to be the right time for you.
I'd concentrate on the social and fun side of archery first, then develop the competitive side as it grows. The other thing is community, have the bbq options there etc. other things that will keep people there for more than the normal 2 hrs shoot and go home.
    Great video.

I ran a club for about four years in the late 90's it's was an IBO 3D club at that time. I have to say it was very difficult setting up every month. We had to set out 30 targets and the shooting stakes. There was a lot of folks show up to shoot but it seemed that myself and one or 2 other members was there to setup by ourselves every month. It never changed. It was me and 1 or 2 others every month. I ended up moving after the 4 years. I have shot a lot almost everyday and hunt every year but have only shot in a tournament twice since 2000. Now I'm 69 and have decided to shoot barebow instead of compound and get back in to the tournaments again. Now in the local club the attendance is about half what it was 20 years ago.

I agree with much, if not all of, what you say in this video. Archery is not about winning big prices, but it's all about the single archer enjoying to shoot, trying to become better and better, competing for fun, to meet other people and so on. In Denmark I think the Nationals still includes U12 etc. Sometimes I have been to 3D shoots where children who are really too young attends, but have a fun day and win a medal. There is no money at all in archery in Denmark, not even for those who attend the national team or at least not very much. So I would say - good video and many good points. The main problem I see in Denmark is lack of voluntary labour, because people are too busy or I don't know. (Me myself is most often too busy, but I also have my own company). So for example this year, the largest 3D shoot "Danish Open" - a 2 days 3D shoot where people from other nearby countries are welcome and normally around 350 archers attends - was not held because of lack of workforce in the club that held the event.

In france, there are 2 nationnal events for adults for indoor 18 meters and WA 70 meters. The Elite nationals is the top 16 men and women in each bow type (recurve, compound and barebow). Then there's the regular nationals with another 16 to 64 archers per age group and bow type (WA age groups from U12s to O60s).
There's also team events through the outdoor season based on WA qualification rounds and matches. Team members must be from the same club. There are multiple divisions starting locally and moving up to national divisions. If you win the division, you move up to the next division; If you finish last, you move down. It's similar to premier league football in a sense.

We had to instantly jump apart 1,5 meters the moment we stepped off the shootingline, but standing on the line within half a meter was totally fine.
Guess we should draw shootinglines all over the world, they seem to provide immunity according to our government.

Olympians abandoning their sport after the olympics are well known stories. For some it was the hard labor to achieve the required level to be allowed to participate the games... for other is was the dream of competing in them.
So for both types of athletes/sporters the top has been achieved for them and they quit the sport.

Farmers have been screwed over since capitilisim began to take over.. The buyer pays buttons for the product produced by the farmer, he knows he can rip off the farmer because theres nobody else for the farmer to sell too.. If the market says you get 5c per orange this year at harvest, then thats what hes getting, either that or stop growing oranges beause unless you can sell local and have the time and infrastrucure to do it, then you are controlled by the greedy distributers and grocers.. I genuinely couldnt sleep at night knowing I was making a fortune off the back of sombody elses hard work.. Id be ashamed of myself..
