Not only was he the last living U.S. WWI veteran, but also the 2nd-to last living WWI vet overall. After his death on Sunday, February 27th, 2011, Florence Green of the UK became the last living WWI vet overall. Florence unfortunately passed away on Saturday, February 4th, 2012, marking the fact that there are no longer any living WWI vets.

He was alive to see the fall of major Western monarchies after WW1, the communist revolutions that soon followed, the rise of Soviet Union, Great Depression, the rise of fascism prior to WW2, the fall of fascism after WW2, the Cold War, the fall of Soviet Union, 9/11, Great Recession, and maybe in the end he saw the resurgence of Nazism in form of Neo-Nazis

In italy the whole male generation of 1899 basically disappeared during the war, 16 yo boys went massively as volunteers at the beginning of the war and got slaughtered. Also in 1917/1918 they were conscripted so just imagine..... The 1898/1899 generation in Italy went totally missing, few remained

This man saw so many things live that it is almost unimaginable:
The German Empire, its collapse into the Weimar Republic, to its collapse with the Rise of Nazi Germany, followed by the Fall of Nazi Germany and the creation of the Federal Republic and the reunification of the two German states.
The Russian Civil War, followed by the establishment of the Soviet Union, the Cold War tensions, slow collapse of the Soviets, creation of the Russian Federation. This man outlived every Soviet leader except Gorbachev.
This man was alive through NINETEEN different Presidencies from McKinley (briefly after he was born) to Obama, seeing the transformation of a racially segregated country to a country that elected its first non-white President. He saw the entirety of the Civil Rights Movement and the abandoning of the Jim Crow laws too.
He saw Britain turn from the biggest Empire in history to the Britain we know today.
The entirety of the rapid change in the music industry happened in his lifetime, with the music of the 1910s in his childhood, through the rise of Rock n'Roll and the Beatlemania, all the way to the likes of Justin Bieber.
This man was a gem that definitely had so much knowledge, some of which he might have never passed on.
