Viewers Suggested Video | Differences Between IYV Thinline Tele’s

- In this 105th installment, Jimmy takes another “viewer suggestion” and shows the differences and similarities between the IYV Thinline Tele style guitars, the ITF-400 TRD and the ITF-300 NA.
Both guitars are normally available on Amazon (when in stock) and are manufactured by Inyen Vina Guitars in Vietnam.
Got both after watching your clip. I like them a lot. Thanks!
Wow!! Outstanding Major Twang!! Thanks so much for watching and sharing with us!! Truly appreciate your stopping in! 👍🎸
Thank you Jimmy. This helps a bunch. Love the IYVs, very grateful to you for bringing me to the light side...

My pleasure RE..glad you enjoyed it! 🎸👍
Thank for the comparison Jimmy. @Snarky K & I were just discussing the difference between Tele's on your last video in the comment section. With the Holidays & everything I totally forgot about the IYV guitars. Perfect timing, I was talking about putting a P90 in my Indio neck & forgot about how much I really liked ITF-400. I'm going to order the ITF-400 & leave my Indio as is. Again thank you for all that you do & have great week!
My pleasure Tim! Good to see subscribers talking shop together!! I think the 400 will make a nice addition to your stable!! Congrats and enjoy it! Look forward to hearing about it once you receive it! Congrats and thanks again for stopping in! 👍🎸

Another great vid, Jimmy - just like always! I love your stuff! I've got the 400 - and it's a great guitar - with a twist. I think I was was telling you a few weeks ago about my experience. The neck was worthless on the one I got in. Huge truss rod adjustment, and I thought I had it right. Well - I did. But a few weeks later, the strings were laying on the fret board again. Warped as all get-out! LOL I just tossed the neck in the can. But no big deal. I have necks and parts laying around all over. So I threw another bolt-on Strat style neck on it, form another cheap guitar that I put a different neck on.... and bingo. It's close to perfect now. The guitar is great. Body is fantastic, and the P-90s on mine SMOKE! I love them. I do not have the 300.... but seen a lot of reviews, including yours of course.... and it has remained on my wish list. Anyway - cool vid. I really do like the IYV line quite a lot, despite the horrible neck I got on the 400. It happens once in a while.... as these budget guitars sit in warehouses, and travel around the world on container ships. I can't hate them for the one incident.
Thanks Jimmy…yes I remember you telling me about the neck on yours now. Like you said, it happens though rare. Glad you were able to get it right and didn’t flat out think the entire brand was bad. Any guitar you buy on line is a bit of a “dice roll” as you really never know for sure what your going to get…you can only go by what other’s have experienced and their track record, which for IYV has been very good. At least in my experience anyway! Thanks so much for stopping in and the support to the channel Jimmy Z….👍🎸
Interesting-so these use Strat-style necks, not proper Tele necks?
@@zuperdee
Hmmm…..truly what is a “proper” Tele or Strat neck? As far as I know, really the only difference between a Fender Tele neck and a Fender Strat neck is the headstock and heal, right? Of course there has been different radius necks and fretboards, but usually a Tele or Strat neck will fit into a Tele, but a Tele neck on a Strat will take some work due to the flat heel. Obviously on imports, bolt holes may not line up, or some other dimensions may need tweaking. I have no idea what Jimmy Z had lying around, but apparently it worked for him.
Your earlier video on the 400 helped me decide to buy one. Very happy with it. Thanks!

Me too! Now I'm buying another off Facebook Marketplace as a Christmas present for a good friend.

Holy Toledo! I just rewatched certain portions of this, and the ITF-400 sounds MUCH brighter than the ITF-300, especially on the bridge. In your comparison with the Firefly FFPTH, I thought the FFPTH sounded just as clear, but with a bit more crispness and bass response somehow… What a shame their Fender clones aren’t available anymore!
Yep! It’s the main reason that P90’s are my “go to” pickups! The P90’s in the 400 (and in the FFPTH) are actually quite good. I like the sound of them. Much different than humbuckers.
Appreciate the suggestion for the video, and hope you both enjoyed and got a little something from it! 👍🎸

nice lil red one on the right there! what is that white one on the far right? looks sorta like a in phase/outta phase squier mustang....
Thanks! Any day is a “Tele Day” 😎
The other red one is a IYV “Acoustasonic” IYV’s version of the Fender Acoustasonic. The guitar to the far right is the IYV Mustang “Hybrid”. Both very, very cool and reviews are here on the channel for your consumption! 🤣👍
Both of these are great guitars 🎸
Yes they are Tim! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 👍🎸
Do you think having 2 f holes gives added depth to the 400 or is it the P90's.. or both?
Hi Ray…thanks for watching and commenting. Acoustically, yes I think having both F-holes and sides of the 400 chambered gives it more fullness. Plugged in, the pickups are more responsible. The P90’s simply have more snap and growl in my opinion, however I do like the stock humbuckers that IYV uses (in-house CNC pickups) as they sound pretty good for stock “budget” humbuckers! Thanks again for stopping in to the channel…much appreciated! 🎸👍
what chords are u using on the guitar run starting at 7:23? sounds really awesome.
I will have to watch and check…😎
I will take a quick look and reply back hopefully soon! Appreciate your stopping in and watching/commenting! 👍🎸
Ok, so just took a look at what you were referring to. So basically what I am doing is a chord riff in Am…the Am goes to the Asus2 when you lift off the index finger and play the “open” G string. Then I slide up and play “Dyads” (basically 2 note power chords) on the 7th fret (D Dyad) and 5th fret (C Dyad) but leave the open strings to drone a bit, especially on the open D and A when heading back to the beginning. I also use the B Dyad/C Dyad in a slide down to the Am to give it just a bit more flavor…😎
Hope that helps…👍🎸
Congrats on another well done video Chief. Time for me to turn two, and take the dog outside. Long comment to follow…
👍👍 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
hey jimmy, you should get the green iyv les paul ,another awesome iyv,
Many have told me the same thing…I have heard lots of good things and I am sure it’s great, but so far I have resisted the temptation…😎
I have a number of LP’s and outside of my 54 Gibson JR, and my FF JR, I just don’t play them much. Any new LP I am tempted to get at this point will have to be equipped with P90’s….and be chambered for weight. At least that’s my plan….🤣
Appreciate your suggestion…it’s not totally out of the question, but not a big fan of the color either….
Thank you for the nice review. I have just received the red one. Nobody mentioned in their reviews that due to he lightweight bodies THEY ARE NECK HEAVY. So pretty inconvenient to play them. Actually I don't mind because I bought it for doing a headless guitar from it. In ur video, the humbucker sounds nicer in all positions.
Hi Attila Lemy…thanks so much for watching and commenting. Yes, they are light. I play mostly sitting down, so being “neck heavy” isn’t a concern and I find even standing up not really a issue. I use no pre/post sound editing in my videos, so what you are hearing is what I am hearing in the studio (minus the inherent UA-cam file compression). Good luck on your “headless” project. I have seen a couple different people do this. Truly appreciate your stopping into the channel and sharing! 🎸👍
Hi Jimmy, I also play seated. Yesterday I gigged the guitar and well... this serious diving does not work for me. On another tele I mounted a long beam in the strap holder's hole. Bnit this time this tele wll lose its headstock like my other tele an becomes a headless guitar. ua-cam.com/video/ujidz2CM_v8/v-deo.html
@@ymelfilm
Hmmm…well if the dive is too much, then I guess you got to do what you got to do…😎
Are you going “zero fret” on it?
@@JimmyStewart1 good question! It can happen, haven't decided it yet! And yes, it should be refretted as well!
@@ymelfilm
I think that’s the way to go IMHO…👍👍
I found a 300 in trans black on ebay, very nice guitar in looks and playability,I believe I got it for 135 bucks
Hi TJ…congrats man!! Enjoy it…nice price too! Appreciate your stopping in and sharing! Much thanks! 🎸👍
Jimmy, what great timing as I recently was talking to you about the Squire Affinity Series Telecaster Deluxes with the humbuckers rather than the traditional Tele setup of two single coils! In my mind you can glance at a Tele from across the room, and know for a fact it’s a Tele, but not so with Telecaster Deluxe with the 2 volume, and 2 tone knobs, and a 3 way toggle rather than the traditional slide switch.
Watching this video, to my deaf ears neither sounded like a Tele. Don’t get me wrong, they both sounded nice, and I would choose the wine colored one with the P90’s on it as my personal preference because you can’t go wrong with P90’s. I think it would have been cooler if they didn’t use the soapbar P90’s and set them up like a traditional Tele with the bridge one slanted, and the neck as it is minus the soapbar style. Once again, this is just my personal preference.
I finally get around to getting a Tele, and I find myself confronted with the Tele Deluxe I mentioned earlier or a traditional Squier Affinity Tele that I purchased. I just couldn’t wrap my head around a guitar with 2 humbuckers being called a Tele. I consider myself a pretty flexible, laid back dude, but it just seems wrong. Isn’t that going to ruin that traditional Tele sound when you put humbuckers in it, as the pickups were part of that whole Tele vibe.
Can you honestly state that those two guitars put out that traditional Tele sound? The semi-hollow design threw me a bit too as I don’t recall ever seeing a hollow body Tele, but with my history of not thinking a Tele would fit my style as I always considered it more of a country guitar even though the guitar gods like, Beck, and Jimmy Page used Tele’s on the first couple of Led Zeppelin albums before switching things up. In my defense though I never really looked at Tele’s so it’s quite possible that semi-hollow Tele’s have been around for years. No shame in my ignorance of such things, you don’t know what you don’t know.
I also have a question about the Mustang HH you might be able to help me with. I want to put a Graph Tech or real bone nut in there but as you know those short scale guitars have thinner necks when you get up to the nut area. Do you know where I might find a nut that I can simply drop in there and not have any issues or excessive filing on the sides to make it fit? I’m not getting any real good answers so far. I figure with you being a retired Chief (Sr. or Master?) you should know everything, lol!
Still waiting on the delivery of my Tele as it won’t be shipped until Monday, but coming from KY that wasn’t hit by the tornadoes, it should be here come Tuesday or Wednesday at the lastest as the place I bought it from MME. (Mountain Music Exchange) is very good about customer service, and shipping stuff out. I’ve had quite a few phone exchanges with Kevin who runs/owns the place, and he’s a great guy wasn’t even sure, ao please help me. He told me the whole shop was trying to figure out how to say my last name the other day, and i laughed as it’s only 5 letters long. I always call and greet him by saying it’s that damn Yankee up in Michigan, and he knows exactly who I am. Obi Wan Jimmy, you are my final hope…
Keep on picking, and if you need to know where you are in the world just ask a QM…regards Chief.
No..they are not “traditional Tele’s” and I think I state that here. They are “Tele” style as in body configuration, and I agree that no…they don’t sound like a traditional Tele either. Over the years, the Tele style has just evolved to include just about any pickup configuration you can think of. The more the merrier I say, but like you, it’s hard to get over the “true Tele” configuration and sound. I think your getting a solid body straight up Tele is a wise choice, especially if you don’t have one. You choose wisely!
Let me know how you like it once you receive it. I have no “Affinity” series Squier history, so curious as to what you think about yours. Cheers shipmate…👍😎
Forgot…your question on the nut. Depending on what the nut size is on the Squier is going to depend on what you need to do to replace it. I would think you could get close, but most replacement nuts are going to need a bit of work to match radius, string slot height, etc…
Actually, the official Fender Telecaster family DOES have a legitimate and well-established pedigree that includes semi-hollow bodies AND humbuckers, P90’s, and practically everything in-between. For example, the Fender Thinline Telecaster was first designed in 1968 by Roger Rossmeisl (of Rickenbacker fame) for Fender, and it first came out in 1969. As I understand it, it was originally created as an attempt to reduce the weight of the Telecaster, which had been creeping up over the years as Fender’s supply of lightweight Swamp Ash dwindled. Then in 1972, Fender itself officially switched the Thinline Telecaster over to the Wide Range Humbuckers, which were designed by Seth Lover (of Gibson PAF fame) for Fender. The original Fender Wide Range humbuckers have a unique design and sonic character compared to Gibson PAF humbuckers, in part due to the use of CuNiFe magnets, and are actually very highly sought after today. Fender has also used MANY other pickups in their own official Telecasters, including P90’s on the Jim Adkins Signature Telecaster, and even Gretsch Filtertrons in the Cabronita Telecaster. For all of these reasons, I think it would be a big mistake to dismiss all semi-hollow and humbucking-equipped Telecasters as somehow illegitimate or not “real Telecasters.” As they say, it’s all in the eye of the beholder. Leo Fender HIMSELF must’ve thought it was perfectly okay, because even G&L currently makes their own version of the Thinline Telecaster, called the G&L ASAT Bluesboy.
Perfect timing on this video Snarky. We were just talking about the difference between pu's in his last video. He read our minds!
@@zuperdee Thanks for the education, I’ll be honest, I always pretty much dismissed Tele’s as a country music guitar other than the 50’s stuff that was done with them, and I knew that Beck, and Page both played them at some points which was my mistake. I freely admit that. I’m a novice/intermediary guitar player meaning that I’ve noodled around with them for 43 years, but never really got into all the differences as I’m a drummer by training. I’ve seen the G&L models, but have no idea on the history of that company. It’s only in the last year that I’ve dedicated myself to becoming a better guitarist, and knowing what I’m doing rather than just using barre chords to run through cheap imitations of song riffs. Thanks again for educating me on my misinformation. To my eye though it just seems odd, and you know how your brain can cancel out what you “know” compared to what you see at times.
They both have their own personalities. At that price, you may not have to pick just one. Wish they had lefties.
Yes they do…which is why I have both! 😎
I was just talking with another viewer about the lack of southpaw models…shame really, but from a manufacturer’s point of view, I can understand somewhat. The smaller guys just can’t justify the additional cost based on return I suppose. I wish they had lefties for you too…😟
Thanks so much for watching and the support my Canadian friend…👍
Jimmy just a thought on a possible video for you. Love your guitar playing. Why don’t you make a video on your playing style. Show some of your licks scales you like playing. Just a suggestion.
Hmmm…I have resisted those types of video’s (except for some tongue and cheek attempts) as I thought there was a HUGE amount of UA-cam guys/gals doing that already, and much more capable of teaching than I.
However, their has been a number of viewers who have brought this up, so perhaps I could reconsider with perhaps my “own” approach!
Thanks so much for the suggestion, it’s truly appreciated! Let me give it some more thought….👍🎸
I enjoy all your videos you produce. Think I’ve bought at least 6 guitars this last years or so. There’s probably another 6 I would like but really don’t need. I like you demo of new guitars and amps. But what gets me is your monster tone and killer licks. I hope you consider the suggestion.

If theres no access to the pots from the back, isn't it fair to say this guitar will only last as long as the cheap pots do? Impossible to upgrade?
No..it’s a bit more difficult of course, but pots can be changed through the F-holes
Fender did make a P90 Telecaster.
Thanks for watching and commenting Troy! Yes, Fender made a ton of differently equipped Tele’s over the years….and still do! The IYV’s are a good way to get a taste of what’s out there without breaking the bank, and they do a good job of it as well! Appreciate your stopping in to the channel! 👍🎸
What a shame the ITF-400 now seems to be discontinued! That sure seemed to happen quickly!
Nope…another shipment is on its way!! Could be spring or sooner….😎
@@JimmyStewart1 Really? Where did you find this out?!?
I talk with Inyen Vina from time to time….they did run short on spalted maple for the tops of the ITF-300, so the newer batches of that will be a solid ash top.
@@JimmyStewart1 Really?!?!? Oh my gosh, THANK YOU IYV!!!!! I happen to think the spalted maple look is ugly! I don’t care for it, anyway… But solid ash might look REALLY good! Since you seem to have some inside information, what else are they going to be sending us? Any other good channels to buy through? I hate to order from Amazon, but it seems like that’s the only way to avoid paying the extremely high shipping charges from Vietnam, and get someone local to return to if there’s a problem…
@@zuperdee
Yep!! The ash top (pic) looks real good. Kinda looks like the top on my Slick SL56, except they gloss it. They will be sending what the “usually” stock on Amazon…so far Amazon has not picked up any of the newer designs yet….hopefully that will change. Only way other than Amazon right now is via Reverb where you can order to your spec, but again, these are being sent direct from IYV so the shipping is direct to you via Vietnam so pricey for shipping.
