can't believe you got clearance over threshold of the runway. as a new pilot i think i would of gone for a go around. little unnerving to say the least. I fly out of Lydd find it a good airport.
Thanks Jon. This is such an adventure! I did some PPL training in my youth before the money ran out! But this is what I would have loved to have done. Can’t wait for the next episode!
What a great video, and what a fantastic trip you had. Great to watch and glad French ATC didn't give you any problems. Hope your son did well in his SATs.
Great video John!!! You fly like a professional. The first leg seemed to be easy with a good french ATC. The La Rochelle airport is very nice and the runway 27 is the best because you have just in front of the runway the Île de Ré which is amazing. Thanks for sharing your flights 👍
I did laugh at the face you pulled when you'd given up on the plan. You needn't watch too many of your videos to know you love a good plan! Great video, music on landing was a great fit - look forward to the rest!
Skipped over the cat bits... But the rest of it was great, especially the spacing between you and the chap in front when landing, could have been 27L at LHR 😁
can't wait for the next up-load......flying in France is easy they are so helpful....not to say our chaps here in the UK aren't but the transits are easy.
Oh Jon, you are getting a bit good at this mate, such a pleasure to watch you fly and as usual very professionally as well. I have never done a flight across the channel so it was interesting to see how the ATC went with this one. Looking forward to the next part.
Looks a blast, great job as per usual. French ATC seems exceptional compared to the UK system. My flying club are going to Bilbao this June but I won't be going :(
Hi i stated learning to fly and i got sick of lessons being canceled becuse of weather do you know of a flying school in southern Europe where i could attend and stay there on a holiday and gain my PPL I would think southern Europe would be the place to do this training great channel thanks you
The thought of flying to Europe, VFR, was really concerning - but after watching the video, I found their RT to be very similar to what I experience in the US.
Great video Jon and what a great buddy you have in Alistair. I've already seen your trip reports so expect future installments to be less "cheerful" ! :)
Just found Your channel, Sir. Very interesting and breathtaking! Thanks for that! I'm a Student Pilot at the moment, and probably like anyone else, who started flying, I'm thinking of getting a plane. I'm considering few options, which are quite different, one being Sling4Tsi, which would be an experimental aircraft with four seats, and the other one Bristell, which is a two-seat LSA. My question is, what are the restrictions and difficulties flying either experimental or LSA cross-country in Europe. I hope You'd find some time to answer my question. Thanksn in advance, have anice flight :)
Hi Alexander. I don’t know if this is still the case, but the LAA posted this article in 2016 which may answer your questions, check with them/your instructor for any recent changes. www.lightaircraftassociation.co.uk/engineering/TechnicalLeaflets/Operating%20An%20Aircraft/TL%202.08%20Travelling%20abroad%20in%20a%20Permit%20Aircraft.pdf
Thank you very much !!! I've just tested it today and it works very well. Quite good to be sure to stay out of Class A airspace flying here in Italy !!!
Great video with nice scenery - would love to visit there someday. Just wondering, with the Bose are you actually able to hear things like the stall horn or is the ANR ‘too good’ for it? :) and how are you finding them? Love your videos and looking forward to the rest of it!
Hi Jon, could you tell me why you had the green plastic strips on the windows, please? Are they a Europe only requirement? Maybe you've had them all the time and I've never noticed them.
Thanks Jon. Can't wait till next Saturday to see the second episode? One question though. The SkyDemon screens you show on your videos are they captured in simulator mode or captured in real time? And if in real time, how do you do that ?
Hi. On this flight, I captured the screen in real time, at the time. SkyDemon kept crashing, and so I stopped this, although I don't believe that was the cause of the SkyDemon crashes.
I don't know! I just know it works...it's one of those great rules of thumb that a mathematician worked out for us dumb pilots. Altitude to lose (6000ft) = 6 x 3 = 18. It will take you 18nm to descend that at a 3 degree descent. You then need to work out your descent rate. Groundspeed divided by 2 x 100 = descent rate in feet per minute. So at 110knots ground speed, your rate of descent will need to be 550fpm for you to descend that height over 18 miles at 3 degrees.
aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/31375/what-is-the-maths-behind-the-descent-rate-calculation apparently this is the maths behind it - I'll stick with the "1 in 60 rule" seems much simpler :)
Alternatively look at you GPS which gives you time to destination (and is already wind adjusted). Calculate your top of descent assuming 500fpm descent which means 2 mins to loose 1000 feet. So if you need to loose 6000feet that is 12 minutes. If your GPS says its 15mins to destination start you descent in 3mins in this example.
Great Video! It looks like it’s going to be a very long day. How many hours flying did you do each day? Do you find that fatigue is an issue towards the end of a long day? I've flown the same first 2 legs from Redhill to Le Touquet and then to La Rochelle before heading to San Sebastian. After 5.5 hours as P1 I certainly needed a break. If you are in that part of the world again, Quiberon is a fantastic spot for an overnight stop. The airport is right in the middle of the coastal village and you can walk from the aircraft to any accommodation. The approach over the sea on to the runway is fantastic. ua-cam.com/video/mfsPsmjCYBg/v-deo.html
Yeah, I know that feeling, when what would normally be minor annoyances start to accumulate it doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed. Having another pilot in the P2 seat makes a huge difference to long trips over unfamiliar airspace. Having someone to bounce ideas off, man the radio, read the maps and plot diversions helps enormously. Kudos for handling it with a non-pilot passenger. Its refreshing to watch your videos that express both the joy as well as describe the difficult moments in such an honest way.
Please stop talking like an American..”airspeed is alive” brits in aviation used to talk plain sensible English. “Speed increasing”that’s what we should be saying during the take off run.airspeed alive does not make any sense..our beautiful English Language is being turned into American gibberish..
you know... calling this flying in europe is higly offensive to me. if you don't want to belong to our community, STOP BEGGING FOR MONEY FROM US! I feel like you brits are super arrogant

Great video and nice flying Jon, just finished watching and now I’m sad pt2 isn’t already uploaded! Looking forward to it... 👍
Thanks Stefan. I was always told to leave them wanting more!
Great learning opportunity! Fabulous! Cheers from EDMY

Cheers Jamie.
Nicely put together, very enjoyable video. Looking forward to more of the trip.
Thank you.
Great FUN! Great memories need to do it again some time
There’s me chuffed at myself going to Caernarfon and you’re making France look easy! Great video as always. I’m looking forward to part 2. 👍
I’m chuffed for you Rory. Thanks mate.

Amazing, especially with your professional touch to the video, now your home 😀😍✈️
Thanks JP.

That was a real pleasure to watch! Thanks
Thanks for watching it.
Hi Jon, as always simply brilliant! Better than watching the Discovery Channel! looking forward to watching the next episodes. Stu
Thanks Stuart.
Thanks Jon. This is such an adventure! I did some PPL training in my youth before the money ran out! But this is what I would have loved to have done. Can’t wait for the next episode!
Thanks Richard. Working on the next episode.

Absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait for part 2.
Thanks Steve.
What fun, Jon. Great video - I am looking forward to the rest. Having just come back from my own little overseas adventure, I can relate!
Thanks!
Fantastic as always. Looking forward to the next one.
Really enjoyed the video! A very nice production and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series....take care!
Thank you.
Good to see Alistair back as your crew buddy.
He's a good companion in the cockpit.
Skipped over the cat bits... But the rest of it was great, especially the spacing between you and the chap in front when landing, could have been 27L at LHR 😁
That was a bit tight.
Great Video John, can't wait for the next instalment!
Cheers Adrian.
can't wait for the next up-load......flying in France is easy they are so helpful....not to say our chaps here in the UK aren't but the transits are easy.
Totally Richard. Was so, so easy over there.
Nice. Looking forward to the next part.
Thanks for watching.
Great video John!
Thank you Andy.
The Flying Reporter really looking forward to the rest of the series...

Thanks. Atc is amazing once you cross the channel. So, so helpful.
Great memories of La Rochelle...It's where I picked up my own machine after buying :)
Wish we'd had time to visit the place properly.
Cant wait for the next videos!!!
Thanks for watching.
Looks a blast, great job as per usual. French ATC seems exceptional compared to the UK system. My flying club are going to Bilbao this June but I won't be going :(
They're really helpful.
Cracking stuff, really looking forward the the reports!!!
Thanks Keith.

Thanks for sharing, can't wait for the rest :)
Thanks Stuart. Plenty more to come.
Brilliant!
Hi! Do you have a video showing how to adjust the warrior II mix for the best power and economy in cruising? Thanks
The thought of flying to Europe, VFR, was really concerning - but after watching the video, I found their RT to be very similar to what I experience in the US.
Great video Jon and what a great buddy you have in Alistair. I've already seen your trip reports so expect future installments to be less "cheerful" ! :)
Hehe. Thanks.
Such a wide of benefits by flying over different countries
Great first leg 🛩
Thanks Stewart.

Very nice videos !!! I have a question ... do you use an external GPS receiver for SkyDeamon or do you think the internal iPad one is enough ? Thanks
I use the GPS we have for the Pilot Aware unit. However I used to use the internal IPAD GPS and it worked fine too.
Thank you very much !!! I've just tested it today and it works very well. Quite good to be sure to stay out of Class A airspace flying here in Italy !!!
great video, many thanks. Could you please explain on submitting the flight plans, where is the best place for it before crossing ?
I do it on Skydemon - piece of cake...does it all for you. I do it at home, at the airport wherever. It needs to be done 30 minutes before departure.
The Flying Reporter thank you so much for your help
I am planning on building up some hours in the next couple of weeks. Any hints would be much appreciated
Great video as always Jon. Followed your updates and been looking forward to these full versions.
How did you cope Bertie with dad gone and SATs?
Thanks TIm. Bertie: "Sats went fine, and it was a bit hard to cope with, but at least i did it"
Good for you Bertie, maybe you will be part of a flying adventure in the summer holidays?
Great video with nice scenery - would love to visit there someday. Just wondering, with the Bose are you actually able to hear things like the stall horn or is the ANR ‘too good’ for it? :) and how are you finding them? Love your videos and looking forward to the rest of it!
You can still hear the stall Warner and other ambient sounds with ANR headsets. The Bose are very comfortable on these long legs.
The Flying Reporter great - thanks!
Thanks for sharing John, could you explain landing fees? How is it paid, how much is it etc? Thanks again
This is part covered on my website, link at the end of the film. Just pay by credit card at the aerodrome office.
Which iPad app are you using? ForeFlight isn’t that popular in Europe right?
Skydemon - link in the description
Hi Jon, could you tell me why you had the green plastic strips on the windows, please? Are they a Europe only requirement? Maybe you've had them all the time and I've never noticed them.
I bought them for the trip. Long hours in the sun can burn your neck/shoulders/arms. So bought these tinted strips to help with that.
Nice to know, thanks.
do you use an app for the flight planner that you use on your ipad/tablet? if so what app?
In the description.
Thanks Jon. Can't wait till next Saturday to see the second episode? One question though. The SkyDemon screens you show on your videos are they captured in simulator mode or captured in real time? And if in real time, how do you do that ?
Hi. On this flight, I captured the screen in real time, at the time. SkyDemon kept crashing, and so I stopped this, although I don't believe that was the cause of the SkyDemon crashes.
another great video 550 fpm so what is significance of /2 and *3? ie why those numbers

Please, keep the music to the minimum when an air traffic controller is speaking. Anyway, thanks for uploading your vids - they're great!
Thanks for the feedback.
Good luck to your son
music is nice
Thank you.
Great Video!
It looks like it’s going to be a very long day. How many hours flying did you do each day? Do you find that fatigue is an issue towards the end of a long day? Thanks for the tip. Fatigue wasn't a problem on this trip until we started facing challenging conditions...then I found I had my limits.
Yeah, I know that feeling, when what would normally be minor annoyances start to accumulate it doesn’t take long to feel overwhelmed. Having another pilot in the P2 seat makes a huge difference to long trips over unfamiliar airspace. It's your choice, but I think a flying/cat fan channel is quite specialised. Please let me know if that's what you're trying for
the vid is of course mainly about flying but dont you agree it's nice that they include other general things to spice it up
Not just cats Neil. It'll be discussion about cruise ships next episode, and I may even sing a song.
More cats please - plus a sandwich of the week section ;-)
I enjoyed the cat chat, if you don't like it, Alt+f4
