Glad you liked it. The 438 has become a permanent part of my day-to-day set up. But I still keep the 055LC around as it's such a great performer - super smooth and, I think, easier to adjust in quick set-up situations. Thanks for watching!
Just got one for my 190X legs and it works very well. I had been using a set of 547B legs since they have a bowl, but the spreader is a pain to deal with on uneven terrain. Now I can get down low with the 190X for a better perspective with ground animals.
Great video, matt 🤙🏻 I made the 438 my choice for allowing me to take advantage to apply it together with the built-in Adapter of the Base Plate of my MT190X3 (I basicaly use most of the time the tripod on this configuration without the center column). Besides, owning other brands tripods, the 438 suits to anyone of them, getting me to add this leveling adjustment to all. See ya, blue skies 🍀📸
Nice informative video Matt. This has just answered all my queries - (that I'd been trying to search on the manufacturers website). I reckon the 438 will be my choice as it looks more versatile and interchangeable. Thanks for the info.
Glad to hear it! The adjustable column is great for saving space (and a tiny bit of weight). I like using both, but the 438 is definitely the more versatile (and cheaper) option. Thanks for watching!
There are a lot of budget options out there but sadly, I do not have any first-hand experience with them. What kind of price range are you hoping to be in?

Thanks so much for this video, I had no idea these solutions existed. One questions: the 055LC, you mention that there are two versions, for different generations of 055, I'm really struggling to find compatibly info online. I wondered if you had a link at all? Thanks! Ben
If you go to the Manfrotto site, they list one that is for the "New 055 Series" and one that is for the "055Pro" I don't know if these links will work but I'll give it a go: www.manfrotto.com/global/levelling-centre-column-for-055pro-555b/ www.manfrotto.com/global/levelling-centre-column-for-the-new-055-series-055lc/ It seems to boil down to when the tripod was made, although I don't know exactly what the differences are. I wish I could be of more help. I've had good luck contacting Manfrotto, drop them a line and if you hear back, let me know what they say. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info! I've actually got an ancient 055 (An 055AB!), which In love, and found one of these columns on ebay for a song, so took the gamble. But I've a feeling it's not going to be compatible. The proof will be in the pudding when it turns up new week though. Thanks again for the video intro to this solution! @@MattSpaugh
@@AlanHalsness at least you got a deal on it - those things are not cheap. If the column doesn't work out, the 438 leveling base works really well. That's what lives on my 055. Good luck with it.
Cheers Matt,. Sorry, last question/s, is there a reason your go-to is the 438 leveling base and not the column? I can I ask @@MattSpaugh what rig you've got on top of it? Read a few reviews that suggest they're easy to overweigh. P.S. Is that a custom audio recorder cage in the intro at @00:09? Cheers
@@AlanHalsness Mainly, I want to retain the option to go horizontal with my column. I know if the video I say that I don't do that much, but I still want the option. I'm running about a 8.25 lb. rig with no issues. Yes, that's a custom cage I built for my Zoom F6. There's a video on my channel about the build with step by step if you want to give it a go. Hey Matt, appreciate this video. I wasn't aware of the 438 leveler till this video. Will the center column still be able to go horizontal on the 055 with the 438 on it?
Yes, the 438 does not effect the horizontal position of the column. It does add some weight so make sure you sandbag your tripod. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Assuming you mean the fluid head (not the ball), you have to tighten both the leveler adjustment screw and the pan lock down tight and then turn the head counter-clockwise. It's much easier to do it when the column is mounted in the tripod. If you want to remove the ball-adjustment head from the column, I don't think that's possible. Hope that helps, let me know if not. Thanks for watching.
I did show how to install it... other than that, there's just one knob so I guess it seemed pretty self explanatory... I can see how it might be helpful though if you're not looking at it. Thanks for watching!
@@MattSpaugh re-watched the video, and I see now you did give a quick press of that button and twisted the 'ball' around, but - my concern is the size of the ball, and the ease of finger access when a camera is fitted - that's all I meant - showing that would have been helpful - the installation is of course important, but the actually practicality of something so small is a concern.

TY! Yes I have the 500AH. I’ve tried tightening everything first but it is still stuck. I’ll try putting it on the tripod.
