  • In this video I show the results of taking my 1in10 twist 270 Winchester loaded with the 165 gr ABLR bullet. Many believe this bullet will not stabilize in a 1in10 twist rifle. Let's find out if it does. We were shooting metal targets at 770 yards.

    Funny you say too easy with the 6.5 PRC...the 270 actually outperforms the 6.5 PRC out to 800 yds. People just all bought into the 6.5 hype and gave up on the ol 270 win. With some Rldr 26 and a 8 twist barrel the 270 win will surprise a lot of people. Good video.

    If you check the specs on the Browning X-Bolt Speed LR and the X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Max LR, you'll notice that you not only get the 7 1/2 twist but you also get a 26" barrel on both versions, as opposed to the standard 24" of other .270 Winchesters. Yet another game changer for the .270 Winchester.

      When I started elk hunting (I live in Utah) I chose a .270 win in a Browning Abolt. Several .270’s were used in our elk camp to harvest our elk. Bear in mind that resident tags were spike tags with the odd bonus cow permit. I have harvested Colorado elk with the .270 as well; 130 gr Partitions at 3000 fps work very well.

And, I have taken Elk to over 500 yards and Deer to 850 yards with it! So, to me, the 30-06 is as Big as a Cartridge as I will "Ever Need" to hunt with, regarding North American Big Game Animals! Plus, the Tolerable Recoil Lends Itself to Shooting Accuracy! The same could also be said of the 30-06's "Offspring" too - Very Pleasant to Shoot and Very Effective on Game Animals! 😃

    IF My favorite was not the 7mm Mag, I would probably be shooting the 270. Maybe a 7.0 PRC. I shoot the 160 Nosler Partition and would probably use it in the 270. You are young and maybe only vaguely heard of Jack O'Conner. He made the 270 famous before your time. So you can believe it is a top choice round. Another point, the PRC's which my grand daughter has the 6.5 is just an advertising operation. I do not mean to slight the PRC's, they are as good as claims. I just mean the old long case rounds have been doing any thing the PRC's can do for a long time. Maybe the factory's never talked about it but the reloaders know and do it all the time. Here is an example: I had her shooting the 6.5 and finally realized it was only flying at 2960 fps with 143 gr ELG. I told her my mag was doing 3150 with 160 gr Nosler and I had lower pressures. That is why so many elk hunters choose the 7mm Mag. So I called my old bud to see if he was ready to let go his tried and true Remington 700, 7 Mag for one of my Grandsons. So thanks for your video, it was good and made me think about all those elk we chased over the years.

    Only getting the correct elevation for the distance. Next comes getting parallax dialed out of the equation. You now have your firng solution only if it is on flat ground, not shooting uphill or downhill.

    Only downside I ever found to the ABLR was some rifles are just picky with it. You may have a real shooter of a rifle, but no matter what the load data is, some rifles just don’t shoot them at acceptable long ranges. For the average hunter, a 1.5 MOA group is sufficient at normal hunting ranges. But this belies the “long range” potential of the bullet’s intended design and usage. Overall it’s a great bullet. But it’s not always within reach to try hundreds of dollars worth of different powders to find that “just right” loading.

    When you see the mirage stop going horizontal, then you shoot. You can learn to read the mirage in your scope to tell how much windage factor when you're shooting. When the mirage is boiling, or going straight up, there's no adjustment necessary for windage, not elevation.

    Thanks for testing this, I’ve been curious about all these new high BC .277 bullets! There is a pretty big window where a bullet is marginally stabile, at least enough to be predictable/consistent but BC is compromised to the point where you’d be better off shooting a bullet more appropriate for your twist rate. I’m curious what the adjusted BC was after you trued your drops?

    Yeah, back in my longer range days, I mostly shot a lighter weight 270 as a plinker and for coyote with a downloaded load using 130 gr bullets. Had a buddy that was a national level benchrest competitor and he worked up a load for a heavier Remington Police 270 using 150 Gr SSTs with either 4350 or 4831. Just under 2700. This was years ago, before these newer bullets. Furthest I could ever shoot was 670 yards but with little wind and even less caffeine, we/he could regularly get 4" groups. I don't think I ever shot under 5". Definitely do-able. Great vid. Took me back!

  • @p.r.8049
    @p.r.8049 6 місяців тому

    The .270 Win with 10" twist will "marginally" stabilize the bullet. No surprise it works, at least for me. The stability factor should be around 1.2-1.3 (1.0 is the bare minimum below which it gets totally unstable and 1.5 or more is 100% stable). Let's say it's 1.25. There is no limit on the high side but exaggerated spinning might bring negative side effects at longer range. 1.25 stability factor is referred to standard weather conditions at sea level: 59F , 29.92 in. of Hg and 78% humidity. It generally improves with altitude or stay more or less the same in very hostile conditions. The stability factor is not just a number but it is function of velocity and as the latter decreases with distance (while the rotational speed barely changes) it will increase and will soon be above the 1.5 threshold for full stability. This will happen in a space of less than 100 yards in your case, I would guess. The disadvantage of not achieving full stability at the muzzle is that the net effect is a loss in BC: the further away it's from the 1.5 value the more the BC is decreased. Bryan Litz points this out quite clearly in his articles and books. Also the Hornady online ballistic calculator shows this very clearly. It will decrease by some %. With 1:9" (as recommended by Nosler) the stability factor for 165 ABLR will be safely above 1.5 in any condition and one will take full advantage of the 0.62 BC. A super-classic example of bullet that has been used with success (in millions) in the same conditions as the .270Win with 10" test and 165 ABLR , or even worse, is the 55 grain flat base soft point bullet in 14" twist .222 Rem. That has always worked great.

    Can you share some info on the bullet?.
    I need the total bullet length base to tip and the length of only the plastic tip. With this info I can run it through the modified miller formula at local temperature and density altitude… very curious to see the Sg gyroscopic stability factor.
    Note that when Sg drops to around 1.2 or less the drag on the bullet can increase thus lowering the BC. Also when nearing the ragged edge of stability it is possible to encounter variance in the BC with changes in temperature and pressure. So you could possibly encounter good stability on a hot day at high altitude and less stability on a cold day at low altitude… which may still be stable but your BC might vary in different conditions which would be complicated. So long as the Sg is above around 1.2 in all conditions you will shoot in and it’s performing as illustrated in this video, there shouldn’t be any problems.
    Browning is now making some X-bolts in 270WIN with 1:8 twist… which is super cool.
    Cheers!

      At 5000 ft of elevation this specific bullet in my gun won't have issues until 1200 yards. With that being said I shot at 6800 ft in this video. And when I use this for hunting I will be hunting at no lower than 8000 ft. Most likely around 10,000 ft. I believe this bullet is 1.51 inches long, someone already did the calculations for me and told me I was good out to 1200 yards at 5000 ft.

After seeing this I'm really thinking about selling my Bergara or Cva 6.5 prc to get a tikka 270 wsm was like it's no point in a 270wsm since 6.5 prc shoots same weights 130 to 150 gr but that 165ablr will make it worth it no need for 2 prc

The 270 Winchester is simply the better cartridge for that! 😃

      🕵️‍♂️ Do you want to know the difference at 500 yards, between the two in a 24" barrel? The Difference Between the 270 Winchester (165 Grain Nosler ABLR bullet) and the 280 AI (168 Grain Nosler ABLR bullet) is pretty similar to the Difference between the 280 AI and 7mm Remington Magnum! About 1" difference in drop at 500 yards, 0.1" in wind drift, and 80 ft lbs of terminal energy! But, at what expense? Austin's Load (because I already asked him the grains of powder that he was using) will use 13% less powder than the 280 AI and 19% less powder than the 7 mm Remington Magnum - Which translates to basically the same % in felt recoil energy (ft lbs)! So, is a 2" difference in drop, a 0.2" difference in Wind Drift (10 mph cross wind), and a 160 ft lbs in Terminal Energy at 500 yards Worth Absorbing About 20% More Recoil? 🤪 Not to me! 🤯

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 Рік тому +1

      🕵️‍♂️ So, Jess, I actually just got finished caliculating the 7mm prc! But, if we look at the Nosler Online Manual, what we see is that the are actually closer in performance! With 65 grains of H4831 powder, the 7mm Remington Magnum actually gets 2,920 ft/s! Now, I asked Austin about his load and he said that he used the 160 grain Nosler Partition data to help him develop it! He said that his loads were 53.5 gr and 54.5 grains of H4831SC powder! He got 2,811 ft/s from a 22" barrel, so if we add 50 ft/s to bring it up to a 24" barrel, or 2,861 ft/s! But, with about 59 grains of Reloader 26, you can get that up to 2,900+ ft! Looking at the 280 AI data also, we see that with the 175 grain bullet - which is slightly longer (1.54"), and using 59 5 grains of Reloader 26, you can get 2,930 ft/s! But going back to the powder comparison of the 270 Winchester and the 7mm Remington Magnum (a more stable/temperature resistant powder) - the difference in powder charge = 1 - (54.5 grains/65 grains) x 100% = 16.15 % more powder (or 10.5 grains) to get an additional 59 ft/s in velocity! ☹ Now, if we calculate recoil in a 7lb rifle for both (which is the current weight of mine, fully scoped and slinged), the what we get as a difference in Recoil is 25.53 ft lbs (for the 7mm RM) - 21.57 ft lbs (for the 270 WM)! This is actually 15.5% more Recoil for the 7mm Remington Magnum! So, Now, let me actually run the Ballistics Numbers, for comparison....🤖:

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 Рік тому

      First, using my "Typical Hunting Conditions Data" for both (Elevation = 8,000 ft, Relative Humidity = 20%, Temperature = 32 F, Zero = 200 yards): For the 7mm RM (168 grain Nosler ABLR bullet B.C. of 0.616, 65 grains of H4831powder, and a MV = 2,920 ft/s) - Drop @ 500 yards = - 35.2", Wind Drift = (10 mph crosswind) = -10.4", Energy = 2,027 ft lbs, Velocity = 2,352 ft/s! Buy comparison, the 270 Winchester (Using the165 Nosler ABLR bullet with a B.C. of 0.62, 54.5 grains of H4831SC powder, and a MV =2,861 ft/s) - Bullet Drop @ 500 yards = - 36.7", Wind Drift (10 mph cross wind) = - 10.6", Energy = 1944 ft lbs, Velocity = 2,303 ft/s! Now, if we wanted to use Reloader 26 and get the Velocity up to 2,900 ft/s, then the difference would be Drop @ 500 yards = -35.6, Drift = -10.4, Energy = 2,002 ft lbs, Velocity = 2,338 ft/s! Now, Why did I mention the 280 AI and Reloader 26? Because both the 270 and 280 AI Have the same SAMMI psi pressure ratings, unlike the 7mm Remington Magnum that does not! Additionally, that extra 6% of unused powder space in the 280 AI can be fully utilized by the 270 Winchester with that same powder! What you will see, as you go to the bigger cartridges- including the 7mm Remington Magnum- is Just because they have bigger cases, doesn't mean that they can utilize that extra space before hitting their maximum pressure limitations! So, it is essentially unused/wasted space and also doesn't lend itself to accuracy (because you get an uneven powder distribution and ignition, when you lay the cartridge on its side)! So, is 59 ft of extra velocity, 1.5" difference (I said 2" yesterday, so it is actually less here) in bullet drop at 500 yards, 0.2" difference bullet drift at 500 yards (I said 0.2" yesterday), 83 ft lbs of energy (I said 80 ft lbs, so my estimate was very close) worth an extra 16% more powder used and 15.5% more recoil? 😬 I don't personally think so! 🤕

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 Рік тому +1

      🤪 I am not sure why my text was cut off, but that 7mm velocity number was 2,352 ft/s! 🤷‍♂️

    • @ronlowney4700

      It also cut off my 270 calculations! So, using 54.5 grains of H4831SC powder, the 165 grain Nosler ABLR bullet (B.C. of 0.62), and the 270 Winchester Muzzle Velocity of 2,861 ft/s, we get - Bullet Drop = -36.7", Wind Drift = - 10.6", Energy = 1,944 ft lbs, Velocity = 2,303 ft/s!

      So I punched the numbers and at 775 yards the 6.5 PRC has more energy... barely. I guess the weight of the heavier bullet is providing more impact energy for the 270 Win. The 165 is also going almost 100 FPS slower than the 143 at 775. So... numbers on paper don't always tell the full story.

    • @ronlowney4700
      @ronlowney4700 Рік тому

      😉 It Never Does! ☹ But, Thanks for Providing the Video Evidence of the Obvious Difference in Terminal Bullet Performance! 😁👍 If It was a Real Animal, instead of a Gong, the 270 (Using that 22 grains Heavier Nosler ABLR Bullet) would Also Show a "Noticeable Difference" in Terminal Performance on the Animal, compared to the 6.5 prc's ELD-X bullet too! Another Factor to consider, for example, is Alot of those "Magnums" - like the 7mm Remington Magnum - Don't Do Well With Temperature Stable Powders and Also Can't Utilize All of Their Case Capacity, Before Hitting their Designed Pressure Limits (Especially When Those Limits are Lower than the 270 Winchester's 65,000 psi SAMMI Limit, by Comparison)! So, when it comes hunting season and those "Book Velocity Numbers" that were measured at "Room Temperature" for those Magnums are "No Longer Valid" - because it is Below Zero in Places Where I Hunt and the powder doesn't combust nearly as well/consistantly - thus, Causing a Loss in Energy, Bullet Velocity, and Accuracy! Thus, the 270 Winchester (Using the H4831SC) Comes Alot Closer to their Performance, than What the "Reloading Book Says", With Alot Less Powder! Also, when you are using those "Non-Stable" powders, the Accuracy goes to Hell from Velocity Variations/Temperature Swings! So, Yesterday, I ran "Some Numbers" for Jess with the 270 Winchester vs. the 7mm Remington Magnum (I did this for the 7mm prc and 280 AI too, with similar results in comparing them to the 270 Winchester), both using H4831/H4831SC powder (and using the 165 grain Nosler ABLR for the 270 Win and the 168 grain Nosler ABLR for the 7mm RM)! The 7mm Remington Magnum Needs 10.5 grains more H4831 powder to get an additional 59 ft/s velocity (or only a gain of only 5.6 ft/s, per grain of powder gain)! So, What is the Tradeoff? Is the Additional 83 ft lbs in Terminal Bullet Energy at 500 yards, a 1.5 inch Difference in Bullet Drop at 500 yards, and a 0.2 inch Difference in Wind Drift (using a 10 mph cross wind) at 500 yards - Worth using 16% more powder and enduring 15% additional recoil (and affecting your shooting accuracy)? 🤕 NOPE, I DON'T THINK SO! 🤪

Someone will eventually get smart and figure out all the light bullets will shoot just as well our of the faster spin and make a faster twist barrel for heavier bullets.
