Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Half Man Half Biscuit. Their songs never fail to raise a chuckle.

With HMHB it's all about the lyrics. The guy is an absolute genius. The music is generally decent, sometimes sublime but what marks them out as great is Nigel Blackwell's biting sense of humour and ability to spot and deftly skewer a deserving target from miles away. I only got into them a few years ago, but once you 'get' it it's like disappearing down the rabbit hole. So many brilliant songs in their back catalogue - Upon Westminster Bridge, Harsh times in Umberstone Culvert ('Sour faced, she picked out the gherkins, saw Christ in Dorothy Perkins'), Renfield's Afoot, For What is Chatteris, Descent of the Stiperstones (genuinely hilarious), National Shite Day ('there's a man with a mullet going mad with a mallet in Millets') and my personal favourite because it just transcends everything, Oblong of Dreams. Someone else would probably have given you a completely different list. Don't sweat on his vocals, listen to what he's singing although I get that if you're not from the UK then some of the references are gonna be difficult. Maybe some crossover of sentiment with Sleaford Mods but less in your face and in my opinion even more biting and effective. Man of Constant Sorrow would give Philip Larkin pause for thought and yeah, i klnow this is sacrilege, but Oblong of Dreams would give Wordsworth a run for his money. Oh and Nigel's a Cardiacs fan as well. Deity and National Treasure status assured. God I love this band :-) ps - keep up the good work mate, loving your channel. pps. Since you asked at the end... This particular song satirises people with no knowledge about anything whatsoever who misguidedly apply for tv quiz shows and end up getting publicly humiliated.

This song is about watching people who apply to go on television quiz shows who have absolutely no knowledge and getting frustrated with them... i think some of the lines are him shouting the answers to a television screen.

I adore HMHB. There's the humour, but also the truth. Brian Moore's head DOES look uncannily like London Planetarium. This is just wonderful. Great shout Glenn.

At last someone reacting to one of the greatest bands of all time! Their music is incredible but it's the lyrics that make HMHB truly special. The music is indeed intricate in places but the words tend to be far more so. A bit too UK-centric to make it big outside the UK perhaps but that is something the band don't give a shit about, being famously reluctant to do even the most basic of promotional work.
I love this band with every fibre of my being and my life would have been a far emptier thing than it is without them.
A knobhead is an idiot. The song is about, as the title says, idiots who go on TV quiz shows despite having an almost total lack of the general knowledge needed. Reread the lyrics from that point of view and they should become clear.

Just a little correction to Mike Summers-Smith’s comment - Ken Hancock was not in the band at this point. Neil Crossley played guitars and bass on this particular track. Oh, and Nigel’s last vocal note was not edited and he still performs it.

I've been listening to this album a lot this past year or so. Other great tracks from it are What Made Colombia Famous and Bladderwrack Allowance. A couple of their more well known songs are Joy Division Oven Gloves and National Shite Day. I hope a lot of Biscuit fans find this reaction. If and when they do your gonna find out just how much they love this band. According to Wiki, John Peel said that when he died he wants HMHB buried with him. I'm just glad they didn't agree.

@@intothemusic908 I know. I'm stoked. I love the fact that they just don't care about being a huge international famous band. There's a great story about them being asked to play on the BBC show The Tube. They said they couldn't because their football team was playing and they didn't want to miss it. When offered to be flown by helicopter to the game after they played they still said no cuz it would only get them there at half time.

Nigel Blackwell is one of the great lyricists, and also one of the great rhythm guitarists (a rare breed). Ken Hancock was lead guitarist when this track was recorded. Neil Crossley was on bass (and sings BVs), and has been in all incarnations of the band. The drummer was Karl Benson.

I'm glad you liked it and I will have lots of things to say but I have to get back to work but I will say JON, PLEASE GIVE GREG JOY DIVISION OVEN GLOVES. It would be such a fun conversation. It might even get extra views by people thinking it's a Joy Division song. Knobheads on Quiz Shows or Dickheads on Game Shows. They'll've is They will have heard you were on. To give you an idea of their mindset, in 86 when they broke up the reason given was "due to musical similarities".

The song is about a knobhead on a quiz show. A knobhead is like a dickhead. First verse is about how their friends should have told them not to go on the show. The person is then asked general knowledge questions about the subjects mentioned in the verses, but cannot answer them correctly. That they will be teased when they return to work the next day is the subject of the penultimate verse. The final verse is a sot of meditation on the whole subject, though I'm lost as to why he shouts Hickstead or mentions Duck Soup.
