    The trouble is that the family who sold that dreadful house for half a million are bound to assume that the large profit was down to their brilliance and not the increasingly hot (for sellers) property market. They'll be in for a rude awakening when then they apply their bat-s crazy design ideas to another development.

    I've been watching scores of these British real estate shows. One thing I don't understand is the nearly complete disregard for the number of bathrooms and how they are designed. Sarah is 100% right that the smaller house needs an upstairs bathroom. That said, taking out the downstairs bedroom would be madness. How can you get by with one bathroom in a home that is two bedrooms or bigger? Especially if you have guests for dinner, etc. You need at least a half-bath (which Brits apparently call a loo or a toilet room). I also can't understand the focus on bathtubs. Men in the US almost NEVER take baths. The only exceptions might be if a woman wants to take a bath with a man, or if it's for some medical reason. I've asked several of my male friends, and most of them can't remember the last time they took a bath. Usually it's many years ago. Even most women here shower daily, and only occasionally take baths. When they do, they often rinse off in the shower afterward. When you're taking a bath, you're sitting there in you're own filth, in a tub that other people use (and it's not cleaned in between uses every time). The most common use for bathtubs here is for bathing children and pets. On most British real estate shows (especially Location, Location, Location), they hardly mention the bathrooms, and often they are only on camera for a moment or two. In the US, a basic description of a house would include how many stories it has, how much square footage, how many bedrooms and how many bathrooms (it's a two-story, 1700 square foot home with 3 bedrooms, and 2 1/2 baths). It seems that Brits might be happy with a bucket and a galvanized tub. Sarah seems quite hung-up on the orientation of staircases, too. You don't even want or need a corridor to the stairs. That kitchen should have been moved to the front, not only for noise reasons, but also to have the living space connect directly to what Brits call the garden). The staircase is often a source of light, and it adds extra space. Dedicating a significant portion of houses this size to an entrance hall is very odd. That said, Sarah is great and the houses usually turn out to be quite nice.

    I don't understand why people in Britain only put in pedestal sinks instead of a vanity. Pedestal sinks have no counter top or storage.

    • @SuzanneU
      @SuzanneU 5 років тому +7

      Pedestal sinks are visually far less obtrusive and look more elegant than vanity units. Vanity units are often catchalls for junk; they also make access to the plumbing far more difficult in case of need. In a small bathroom, there's much better flow with a pedestal basin, as there's no vanity eating up valuable floor space. Narrow wall-mounted shelves or baskets can hold toothbrushes, hairbrushes, razors and suchlike. Women can do their makeup and hair in their bedrooms, cutting out clutter; they're then also not hogging the bathroom during rush hour! My own bathroom has a wall-mounted basin, and will have a rail-and-basket system alongside the bath and above the basin to hold essentials. I'll be using a narrow cabinet designed for shoes to hold towels and toilet paper.

      @@SuzanneU Those are great points. Your bathroom sounds very organized and tidy.
      I really dislike seeing bathroom items--such as hair brushes--but maybe that's just me. I bet if I went into your bathroom I'd think, "Wow, look at how neat her bathroom is without a vanity!"
      I've never had a plumber complain about my vanities but it's probably because they are the norm here in the U.S.
      I have a pedestal sink in our "powder room" on the main floor for guests to use (no shower or tub). Even though it is great for such a small bathroom, looks pretty, and provides more leg room I find it a constant irritation because I have to store the toilet paper, etc., in a different room. (There is no linen closet because the bathroom is so small.)
      We have a a 9 ft. long counter with double sinks in our master bathroom. There are cupboards under the sinks plus 6 drawers in the vanity. On the opposite wall of the bathroom there's a nice 3'+ wide cupboard with hickory doors that match the vanity. It holds 2 full-sized baskets for dirty laundry, fresh towels, over-sized bottles of shampoo, etc. Add in the usual mirrored medicine cabinets to store Rxs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, make-up, etc., and I'm in heaven!
      My husband and I never get in each other's way which is great.
      Vanities in kids' bathrooms usually have multiple drawers and longer counters so there's not much juggling around with each other. (Well...kids will always squabble but that's normal!)
      In the U.S. potential home buyers would probably take one look at a regular sized bathroom that only has a pedestal sink(s) and say, "Not interested in this house" and leave. Obviously it's different for Brits.
      Thanks for your polite, factual reply. Commenters on UA-cam can be so nasty at times so I doubly appreciate it. Comment boards are sometimes breeding grounds for sociopaths.

      @@@SuzanneU I dont see how floor space would trump the storage space offered by a vanity. I have a tiny bathroom and the vanity cupboard space is most useful. I think its just customary and familiar to have a pedestal sink.

      @@happydays1336 you obviously live in a massive house. in the uk that would be a mansion. in london that would be £200 million plus. totally different scenarios. this show is filmed in a way that makes the houses look far bigger than they are. that cottage would be smaller than a garage in most of the usa. we dont have space for storing extras here.

    Sarah's idea for that garage was perfect. Clueless dad couldn't rent a jackhammer and bust up some of the concrete floor? Or maybe the children want the garage stuck in the middle of the house, since they seem to have a say in everything. That Glass Wall woman and her one precious chick are creepy. She really thought that lazy boy was going to get up in the morning and persist with all that work?
