- I'm renovating a 140 year old stone house on an off-grid property and painting the walls with self-made lime paint, which is very ecological and economical. Struggling with the cold winter nights in the uninsulated wood cabin. But I'm not giving up and already imagine living in the warm stone house 🔥

Just a little tip from my youth about keeping warm with a stove: heat some stones (natural or clay bricks) on the stove until they are really hot. Wrap them in towels and put them in your bed at night. They will hold their heat until morning.
I do the same but with two rubber water bag of 2 liters each filled with almost boilling water directly from electric water kettle...I have two winter duvets in bed the water bags keep hot all night long even after 12 hours they are still warm...under the duvets my bed feels like a oven...😄

N.B. If you decide to heat rocks, don’t use ones straight out of the river - they can explode when heated due to trapped moisture that becomes steam.
A little trick I just recently learned to defrost your windows quickly. Take a bag that will hold water. Doesn’t need to be that big but you will put warm water in it,not hot water. Then just slide the warm water bag over the glass on your car and voila. Problem solved
You might want to find some kind of mesh to put over that pipe sticking out of the wall. It looks like a fine place for a bird to make a nest.
For sleeping in the cold, use a tent inside the cabin. Doesn't have to be a real tent if yours are too large, anything that keeps the heat from your body in as a second layer after your blanket. Stay healthy!
I think you just told us why you're having misshaps, i wonder if you're low on energy as well, you really need to be careful with monoxide poisoning, it can take days or weeks, but it will get you in the end, the wood burner is no problem, but gas and candles are a very big problem in a small cabin, i lived one year in a 24 sqm cabin, with a Diesel heater and a gas stove, i stopped using candles all together, and did a lot of venting after everytime i had used the stove, so much so that if i do it again, i would move the stove outside under a little roof of it's own.
You should go Google the effect of monoxide poisoning, and see if you recognise any of the symptoms, short term and long term.

Also, your body consumes a lot of calories is the cold, especially if you’re sleeping in low temperatures. When you’re active your body produces heat which keeps you warm but when you’re sleeping it’s just a big calorie deficit. Maya seems to eat very healthy but I suspect that if she increases her caloric consumption she will be much more energetic.
Walls that haven't had care for 50+ years soak up a lot of moisture from your lime paint, but it's uneven because underneath are different, separate stones which may have different moisture levels depending on the stone's mineral composition. Also, there may be deeply embedded kitchen or heating grease & soot, preventing absorption of paint. More layers will eventually stop the bleed-through, I think.

I was painting my garage and spilled a cup of paint. It went flying everywhere. I remembered you saying “it’s only paint!”. I luckily had a drop cloth, and wore painters coveralls. Still, I got it in my hair. Instead of panicking, I cleaned it up as much as I could then I continued on to complete the job. It wasn’t that bad, after all!

Hi Maya🎉 just a little tip for when you are brushing dust on the floor, sprinkle some water 💦 on the floor it keeps the dust down, a trick I learned when I was an apprentice many years ago. Tony 🇬🇧👍xx
Twist some thick wire into an 'S' shape and hang the paint can from a rung of the ladder to avoid spills. Works for me!
I put a blanket over my windscreen a towels over the front door windows to stop frost

If youre going to have a wood burning stove innthe cottage, better to get it in there as soon as you can so it can start drying out the walls. There will no doubt be cracks that form from the drying process but its lime plaster right so its fairly easy to rake out the cracks, fill and paint.
I am so proud of you working in those temps! If I forget my ice scraper I use a credit or bank card along with letting my car warm up with defroster on. Hope that helps! The stone house is coming along great! You are doing such good work! See you next week. Hope it warms up!
That is the nature of lime wash (whitewash) It will probably take at least 5 coats before you reach the depth of color and the opacity that you want in the finished wall. Just keep on painting. 😊

Dehumidifier, some heat, more time, several more coats of lime on the newer wall finish.
I'd recommend putting in a dehumidifier to draw the damp from the old walls as well as heating.

The place is looking wonderful. A tip from freezing Pennsylvania. Frosty car windows. In an emergency, I always keep an old credit card or I.D. card in my wallet. They work really nicely as a make shift car scraper. (credit cards seem to work best)

You can use a credit card, or any plastic shopping card as a scrapper on your car window - it works really well.
you need some frost free outlets i the yard if you're dealing with freezing. The water weeps out the bottom, 6 feet in the ground, when they are turned back off.

When i was young we always whitewashed the barn and chicken coop With lime paint but we mixed it much thicker. Try a thicker. Mix
Limewash paint shouldn't really be applied when temperature is below 5°C (41°F) so it was probably too cold for it. Also not sure but looked like some of the new plaster wasn't fully cured so you probably had moisture still coming out from it resulting in the staining.

You are such a strong woman, Maya! Brava! When you show the video of your property, I can recall the hard work you did to accomplish each step. Your property looks amazing. Give yourself a pat on the back. You've come a long, long way. Perhaps you can break your rule and just take your bed to the house and sleep there. You don't need to move everything. I slept in the cold and got cramps in my legs! It was quite miserable, but when the sun came up and warmed everything, I felt better. You'll get through this. The Mediterranean winters are short. Soon things well start to grow quickly again and the weather will warm and you will be living in your beautiful stone house!! Oh dear...., everyone has spilt paint at least once. You may get a more even coverage with a roller & thicker lime wash. Good luck with the water marked areas.
Oh I thought the warm color of the lime was going to be the finished color. It went well with the stones. Maybe you need more pigment in your lime paint to help cover? Or more lime? Seems like the last wall is covering better so maybe since the paint was a thicker consistency,it covered better.
If you have any birch logs, save them for the last fire of the evening as they burn much slower than other types of wood. I admire your perseverance working in such cold conditions, I know I couldn’t do it. 🥶

To cut through the frost on your car use half and half isopropyl and water and spray it on your windshield do not scratch. Also works on frozen keylocks💗

To move in you need a wood stove and it will take two or three days to heat the walls of the stone house

Would using a paint roller be more efficient at applying the lime paint? Might want to consider for next time. can put some insulation on the cement floor maybe before putting the finished floor to help with keeping warm.

As always it's a pleasure to see you and you're progress, it's looking nice with a little colour in there. Looks like you need a little ventilation, its likely the moisture from the paint evaporating and gathering at the top then condensing on the cooler walls and saturating it. I'm guessing you didn't put a vent tile on the ridge? It would explain why the wall with earth behind isn't as bad, that'll be maintaining a fairly even temperature from summer. At least thats my best guess without actually seeing it anyway. Look after yourself Mia, we don't want to see you get sick. Is that a multi fuel burner? Maybe buy some coal, load about 10 bricks in at night just before bed and it should stay warm until morning, or at least take the chill off, and if you get up in the night chuck a couple more in

She’s using lime wash, not paint. Completely different. Whitewash cures (not “dries”) through a reaction with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to form calcium carbonate in the form of calcite, a type of reaction generally known as carbonation or by the more specific term, carbonatation.
I always love seeing the olive tree. It seems to be doing really well after you freed it up of all these vines.
I would get a larger wood stove. One that you could have a kettle on and a pot/pan. Save your power and cook on the wood stove.

Progress isn't always obvious Maya, and other times it is totally absent. But, get some heat into that room first, because there is years of moisture to remove before a properly breathing structure will evolve. Do you have a temporary form of heating ready to be set up, as this seems the next step towards a liveable space above the river bank.

Condensation on the outside can cause humidity inside. Even small cracks.

Your videos make my week! Great job, amazing positivity. You've accomplished so much, it's amazing! You might consider hempcrete for insulation of the cabin. It is difficult when a building has finished boards on outside and in, but hempcrete is an amazing natural product that is mold, rodent and insect free and depending on the thickness, has an R value between 28-40, wicks away moisture and maintains a temp of 60 degrees F.

Put lukewarm hot water on your car windows. Not to hot incase heat breaks the cold glass.
chinese diesel heater .. cheap and effective.. like the van lifers use.
Think best for you is to go home , no reason to get sick, house is not ready and too cold to make any good work.❤
