Just like in the auto industry. You charge a fair price even if it took you less time. Your years of knowledge and diagnostic skills allow you to make more $. You are a top notch tech. People like you are few and far in this day of age.
But with this stuff if you charge more then the customer thinks it is worth they walk away. I have a garage full of repaired devices I can't get rid of.
Those driver boards looked well cooked, i'm amazed that they still work ok. "Crackus joint-i-cus" would be the roman discription :-D Units like that are a bloody nightmare, i had a similar one years back and everything had to be removed to access the p.a. They really dont want you to repair it.
Had a cackle when i saw this lol...You got lucky... Folks install these things in tight cabinets with little to no ventilation and they get hot !!.... Had an Onkyo brought to me with same shut down fault and found blown O/P transistors and the sub board was dis-colored from heat and full of dry joints and blown transistors on two channels, even one electolytic with its guts exploded everywhere ! The further i dove into it the more problems to be found. Apart from all the loose driver transistors the driver sub board also had shorted surface mount transistors. No replacements available in Australia.... Over 3 months to get parts shipped to here from overseas so i said just go buy a new one !! That lead free solder is garbage... No access panel... Hate these things !!
I always wondered why they didn't put a little 12 volt small fan like were on computer CPU's. All it has to do is work past the warrantee period, they want you to buy a new one. I hate these too, get your magnetic tipped electric screwdriver out, or you will end up with hand cramps from all those damned screws! The back RCA panel is murder...
@@12voltvids Got it out of warranty though, which is all they cared about. Fail after warranty you are very likely to buy another one, simply because you need the same form factor, and are used to the appearance of the units.
I have a early 2000s onkyo where the right channel cuts in and out. Have often thought of tearing apart to check on solder cracks, but always question my abilities. Thanks for the video always like learning.
I have an Onkyo AV receiver in really clean condition that a friend gave me that is displaying the same problem. I started troubleshooting it a couple years ago but looking at the DSP boards and working without a schematic I gave up. This video will definitely give me a head start to try again. Thanks!
I have fixed a couple of the DTS chip onkyos thanks to your previous video. The latest one I have has that same crispy channel board. And for the most part looks nearly identical inside. The unit has a 12v fan that’s right above that board and appears to have never come on in its life. Dust on the blades but not the blade edges. No patterns to suggest it’s ever run. Manual says it’s a duty cycled fan with 3 speeds based on temp. I hit the temp sensor with my heat gun and it kicked on. Found that the sensor thinks it’s -23 at room temp!
Took a Chinese made big black box to the Salvation army store yesterday. Noone wanted the thing, it worked ok so off to charity. You have mad diagnostic skills.
Integra, Onkyo with a price hike, and the same internal parts as the regular, just with a audiophool price tag instead. But same budget board assemblies inside.
The sad part is it's the other way around. Back in the early days, 'Integra' was the higher quality line - Products were labeled 'Onkyo Integra' and they really were fabulous. Heavy duty power supplies, superb low impedance high current capabilities, better build quality, cutting edge tech, and they sounded audibly better than the non Integra stuff. They then decided to spin off Integra as a separate division for marketing purposes. And for a long while through the 90s the Integra stuff was still much better than the standard Onkyo line, even while the standard line was still better than a bunch of its competitors. Witness the sad state of affairs today... :(
I had to repair a similar Onkyo two years ago. The driver board was well-roasted like this one, plus it was full of SMD parts. One SMD transistor was bad, and more than a dozen of these small, low ohms resistors were out of tolerance. The idle current was tens of percents out of tolerance on all channels (on some channels it was like 200-300%) due to the component value drifts caused by heat damage. All electrolytics were 85°C rated on the board that was soot black from heat. Most of them had high ESR, some could be considered open. Traces lifted off of the board even if you just mumbled "soldering iron" too loud. I managed to repair it, and the owner (my collegaue) installed three silent PC fans to cool the driver board. These could have been great amplifiers, but it seems they screwed up the thermal design of the driver boards really well in more than one models. EDIT: I forgot to mention the most important: as I said, that board was full of SMD parts. The source of the fault was that the SMD glue became conductive from the heat, and screwed up the DC bias of the driver stage in one channel so much that one trasistor fried itself. I have never seen before SMD glue to become conductive. The white circuit glue which turns brown and becomes corrosive and conductive, yes, I have seen that infinite times, but not with oridinary looking, red SMD glue.
It is sad what has happened to all brands of mainstream audio equipment and such. I fix stuff as a hobby and have worked in a couple of Onkyo amps, one I've had a long time and i gave it to my mom, an Onkyo TX-80, a decent little receiver, nothing wrong with it but dirty pots and switches. The other i got on craigslist super cheap, an Onkyo Integra A807, an incredible integrated amp that is super heavy and sounds amazing, also had dirty pots and switches, the selector switch would turn on it's own and switch to different sources, so the owner got rid of it. I love it, and at first i thought i would sell it, as it is nice and it would fetch good money, but i don't think i will, it is too nice. But I can see how the Integra Onkyo brand went into a dive with this stuff you showed. So sad, the A807 is a beast and it is so well constructed, this AV crap is not good, and am sure it's not cheap!.
Hats off tot he integrator for bringing it in, so often these would just get thrown out and the cost pushed on to the customer (although, maybe the integrator had provided a warranty or something and it was his $$$ on the line).
I own 2 of the old 2 channel integra units from the mid 80's. They have been bullet proof with very good performance. I had them both serviced about 12 months ago and absolutely nothing wrong with either. It's such a shame that their quality dropped when they went to these rubbish multichannel units. I also noticed how heat effected that board was. Must have been used in a very confined space with no ventilation.

When companies start seeing low-end products flying off the shelf by other companies they have to make a decision either they have to also cut their production costs or go out of business. Look at what happened with companies like nakamishi. They tried to survive on their reputation and only offer high-end products, and people just didn't buy them the buying public wanted the best value they could get and they chose the cheapest brands. So the high-end brands had really one choice and that was to make a product that was competitive with the cheap crap or go out of business. So don't blame the companies for doing this this was something they had to do or they wouldn't be around. It's unfortunate but if Walmart didn't exist and didn't sell cheap electronics or the other discounters the mainstream brands would still be making top quality products and we would be paying for it or we wouldn't have their products. If cheap products hadn't flooded the market like they did in the 90s and 2000s there will be a lot more repair shops still in business because people would be spending money to fix that $1,000 tape deck are that $1,000 VCR or that $3,000 television. The market gets flooded with cheap crap and people flock to the discounters to buy this cheap crap and the high-end companies go out of business. You know who started all this? Let's put this way they may have lost the war in the Pacific but they won the war of economics, that's right Japan the company that you love electronics from. It was the North American manufacturers that had fantastic products and the Japanese had absolute crap right into the 60s. I remember seeing the words made in Japan as a kid and being told it was junk and a lot of it was. But that didn't last long the Japanese got very good at what they were doing. They then started dumping their products in North America selling them cheaper here then it cost them to actually make the product. This Force the North American manufacturers to go out of business or relocate to other countries. Zenith and RCA relocated their plants to Mexico. When it became more expensive to manufacture products in Japan the Japanese company started moving their manufacturing to the Philippines in China and Vietnam and other countries were labor was cheaper. But the one factor that's common in all of this is the demand for cheaper and cheaper electronics and most people don't care if it can be repaired or not. If their TV lasts them 3 years that they paid $300 for oh well that's a hundred bucks a year of ownership let's go buy another $300 TV. They're not going to spend $100 or $200 to fix their old one to get another couple years out of it. That shut down pretty much every repair business in the country. I saw the writing on the wall in the early 2000s and got out. I only do this now as a side gig to make a couple of extra dollars a month but really I do this more to give me something to do and to make these videos to teach people how they can service their own products and maybe inspire a few to try and set up a little side business for people that want to repair their old equipment. The income from the advertising revenue helps too, in fact I think that's probably the biggest incentive for doing this because I sure don't make much from doing the actual repair if it was just the money that I make from doing repairs I wouldn't be doing it because there isn't any in it.
at least on my SR-705 I have never seen them run. However my speakers are very efficient so the amp doesn't run that hot. The only thing that gets toasty is the HDMI/DSP daughter board. I cool that with an external fan. Seems to work well as it runs fine since almost 15 years

It is only a Dolby pro logic unit, hardly worth my time, but I said I would give it a try. 7X-SV717PRO, got the bottom off looking at solder connections at the regulators and long connectors. Only front main speakers work, no center, no surrounds.
I hate working on most of these. I have a really nice. Harmon kardon that I paid a shitload for that is totally dead. I can't bring myself to get into it. Just the way it is built. Argh. Some day.
@@12voltvids Hitachi amplifiers can be worse, mostly because all the internal wiring is both solid core and fragile, and exactly the right length to reach part to part.
@@SeanBZA old pioneer. I have an old one that was dropped and the wood cabinet broke. I have the chassis somewhere but I bet it has water damage as it has been in a leaky old shed for 40 years.

@@costykali6930 no what I was referring to was my Onkyo suffered the DSP problem. I fixed it many years ago that's the one that he used the light bulb to reflow the BGA connection. It worked for a couple years I bet it started acting up again I reloaded the game it worked for a while and then again started acting up. Onkyo had extended warranty they would fix it for free but I had to ship it to New York and back and the cost of shipping was almost $150 each way. So spend $300 to fix a receiver that cost me I think 400 when it was new. It looks on Craigslist found a similar one that was a bit older for 40 bucks and bought it. Then I was given another one of the same vintage that had more power and more inputs and just had a bad HDMI plug on the back fix that and put that in service.
This is a common failure mode with Onkyo receivers, poor design choices with that riser board being fitted so close to all those blazing hot power transistors with a dirty great heat sink to radiate all the heat straight onto the boards. That said, when they work they do have a nice sound to them, i have a couple of ones like this one, one of them is completely silent and the other can only be used in 2 channel stereo mode
I actually involved someone that way once. Wanted the charge broken down. Part 5.00, labour to replace part 10.00, knowing what part to replace 90.00. Customer was pissed off.

These modern multi-channel receivers are poorly designed with no access plate on the bottom it's a major time taking job to just get near where you suspect the fault is. This one has suffered from overheating going by the well cooked boards, little wonder that the fault was a bad connection. Onkyo used to make some good ones, but not today, they started going downhill when the HDMi multi-input boards started blowing due to a bad design, this affected many brands. You can bypass the protection circuit on some models, but tuning for maximum smoke just causes more damage to fix. I hope you got paid for all the time and effort this one took Dave.
I am having the same problem with my Onkyo HT-3800. First it started when I started playing some music in high volume and it would shut off. The receiver was getting hot. No problem playing with low volume. But now it shut downs as soon as it turns on. How much can I expect to pay to have this professionally repaired? Thank you.
Would have taken that entire board, cleaned off the crusty flux, then put fresh and hot air reflowed the rest of them as well, so that it does not bounce with another channel with cracked joint.
Here I fixed the same case on the same amp from Onkyo (TX SR 607), but one driver transistor was defective. Further I found that due to the heatflow all top located caps showed high ESR. ua-cam.com/video/ApDzayGj7NY/v-deo.html It's german, but selfexplaining I guess
The Onkyo Integra was the “high end”. This is Integra by Onkyo. They sold out their older, quality 2 channel amps, receivers, and integrated amps so they could make money by selling this junk to unwitting HT users. I have worked on a few of the older 2 channel a Onkyo Integra models (M504, M506, and A-8087) and they were fairly nice units. I think in the later years the line started to decline in quality. A victim of cost cutting before the “Integra by Onkyo” brand existed. It you got Integra model with the wooden side covers then it’s one of the top quality ones. The client that had the 2 power amps had an extra T-4087 turner that he gave me. It’s the best tuner I’ve ever had. I live out in the country on the other side of the island from where all the radio towers are and I can normally only pick up 3 channels (2 pubic NPR channels, and a college radio station). They have repeaters on this side of a 4000’ range so they can be picked up by any crappy tuner. But with the Onkyo Integra T-4087 I was getting half a dozen more channels that were actually listenable ( though not perfect). Plus it’s got all sorts of cool lighted buttons and glowing 3 color display indicators. Not a bad thank you gift.
I don't doubt you have a guy cleaning your windows and gutters with all the video blogs and fixing stuff not to mention editing I am surprised you have enough time in the day to shower and eat let alone mow lawns clean up the house clean gutters and windows You can only do what you can and its better someone else climbs those ladders to clean gutters and windows isn't it I think gutters and windows are for the young at heart and it's money well spent if you can get someone else who you trust to do it for you

For these unit, you HIGHLY need to install a fan, to cool them down. I use the "auxiliary" power connector, so when the unit start, the fan start too.
Mine had internal fans and it still failed

$50 of the invoice is to repair the solder joins and the rest of the invoice is for knowing how to find what solder joins needed to be repaired.
I actually involved someone that way once. Wanted the charge broken down. Part 5.00, labour to replace part 10.00, knowing what part to replace 90.00. Customer was pissed off.

12/07/2022 - I just left a repair shop where i do piece work and there is one in which the HDMI is not putting out sound. What a co-incidence.
I have a Pioneer vsx-59txi weights 68 pounds . And has the same problem it keeps going into standby mode once I power it it on. Any clues on what it might be? Is it possible I could send it to you? These modern multi-channel receivers are poorly designed with no access plate on the bottom it's a major
time taking job to just get near where you suspect the fault is.
This one has suffered from overheating going by the well cooked boards, little wonder that the fault was a bad connection.
Onkyo used to make some good ones, but not today, they started going downhill when the HDMi multi-input boards started
blowing due to a bad design, this affected many brands.
You can bypass the protection circuit on some models, but tuning for maximum smoke just causes more damage to fix.

i have TX-sr707 Onkyo reciever it has sound on the front speakers but the surround speakers dont give me any sound

I am having the same problem with my Onkyo HT-3800. First it started when I started playing some music in high volume and it would shut off. The receiver was getting hot. No problem playing with low volume. But now it shut downs as soon as it turns on. How much can I expect to pay to have this professionally repaired? Thank you.

Would have taken that entire board, cleaned off the crusty flux, then put fresh and hot air reflowed the rest of them as well, so that it does not bounce with another channel with cracked joint.

If standby voltages present it is likely in a lock out condition. Don't know the key combo off hand to unlock as they are all different.
Here I fixed the same case on the same amp from Onkyo (TX SR 607), but one driver transistor was defective. Further I found that due to the heatflow all top located caps showed high ESR.

Kind of a crummy, cheap design for Onkyo's "high end" brand. I'm still disappointed they bought Pioneer. Hope they don't ruin them.

It's all crap these days.
The Onkyo Integra was the “high end”. This is Integra by Onkyo. They sold out their older, quality 2 channel amps, receivers, and integrated amps so they could make money by selling this junk to unwitting HT users. I have worked on a few of the older 2 channel a Onkyo Integra models (M504, M506, and A-8087) and they were fairly nice units. I think in the later years the line started to decline in quality. A victim of cost cutting before the “Integra by Onkyo” brand existed. It you got Integra model with the wooden side covers then it’s one of the top quality ones. The client that had the 2 power amps had an extra T-4087 turner that he gave me. It’s the best tuner I’ve ever had. I live out in the country on the other side of the island from where all the radio towers are and I can normally only pick up 3 channels (2 pubic NPR channels, and a college radio station). They have repeaters on this side of a 4000’ range so they can be picked up by any crappy tuner. But with the Onkyo Integra T-4087 I was getting half a dozen more channels that were actually listenable ( though not perfect). Plus it’s got all sorts of cool lighted buttons and glowing 3 color display indicators. Not a bad thank you gift.
I don't doubt you have a guy cleaning your windows and gutters with all the video blogs and fixing stuff not to mention editing I am surprised you have enough time in the day to shower and eat let alone mow lawns clean up the house clean gutters and windows You can only do what you can and its better someone else climbs those ladders to clean gutters and windows isn't it I think gutters and windows are for the young at heart and it's money well spent if you can get someone else who you trust to do it for you
And I work a full time job too.
