A man in southern China’s Hunan province presented a Russian girl with a Lamborghini, asking for her hand in marriage. He said repeatedly: “I’m very rich, I can buy you anything. Marry me.” But he was rejected eventually.
Two mistakes he made
1. Showed off his wealth in hopes of winning love
2. Never bothered to ask the girl how she feels for him before proposing publically.
Proposing in public works well when the other one is willing, and privacy is of much importance for many people and they want the right to keep it for themsleves
I’m pretty sure it might be fake.
I think for many of us, culture in China can be surreal. Marriages are often arranged, with wealthy families pairing off their offspring to each other sans any courtship. I believe this boy genuinely thought all he needed to show was that he was wealthy, and would treat her "well" (by their typical standards) and that was enough.

I have never liked public proposals because they put people's reactions on display and pressure folks to make the most serious life decision based on saving face.
I always hate that when girls reject guys in public people call her evil for 'embarrassing him'. The guy was the one who CHOSE to propose in public! Sure it's humiliating, but if you choose to propose in public you have to be ready for that risk. This is especially relevant when you haven't discussed getting married, and so the proposal is really out of the blue.

this is why the public marriage proposal trope is creepy. you're manipulating the situation to make it harder to say no. unless you've already talked about marriage/spending your life together/having kids, a public proposal is a red flag in my opinion. you don't force somebody to make a commitment like that by ambushing them with social pressure.

Most people always think that a public confession would definitely be accepted, but it just pressures the receiver of the proposal even more if they don't actually like the confessor.
