Sure appreciate all your videos Steve. Thank you very much. Our wimpy transformer gave out yesterday. I'm out of town and my wife came home to a cold house. Our oil delivery company service guy came out this morning and diagnosed the problem. We're up and running now. Since we could not be there, it's nice to see your video explaining what and how you do things. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Old buddy Wayne MSR series he is my little buddy. The darn injector pump SUNTEC A2VA-7116 gave a few fits, so i replaced the injector pump, now he is very happy. 35 years non stop working. SUNTEC makes very good injector pumps for oil furnaces, Burning used car oil, 134a compressor oil and cooking oil, THE INJECTOR PUMP has no problem pumping it through to the nozzle..
But still i will work on my own little buddy wayne, i don't want no furnace touching buddy wayne, IT work for the past 35 years and i tend to keep buddy wayne going. Simple little burners, INJECTOR PUMP, SPARKLER, GUN and motor to run it.
Man you're saving my literal life with this video. I think I could almost replace everything on my furnace thanks to your videos man. Thank you so much.
I really admire people who can do this kind of work. They're doctors, surgeons for our appliances that we rely on, that help make our lives functional and comfortable. Bless them!!
Steve, thanks man! I had frequent delayed firing and then it it'd shake the house. The local oil tech came out and said he couldn't get it to do it. I bought a transformer online and replaced it and it's perfect now thanks to you.
Excellent video I have a new nozzle ,,igniter coil and cad cell I’m bringing to a customer that has the same problem …delay start I guess I’ll go with transformer first and try it. You breathe very heavy tell your doctor.
I changed the transformer on my beckett sometime in september. The burner ran fine up until about a month ago and started having intermitent no start. I went in today and hit the reset. Transformer was weak. I put a new one on and it started right up. I do not have a tiger loop but there is a return line (i will be installing a tiger loop soon. The unit is mounted about 16 feet off the ground with no pre-pump, we have a 3000 gallon tank running diesel. The unit is a modine with a beckett burner. Could it be the electrodes? I do have a set of those. Maybe nozzle? I also have a pre-pump which I intend on installing. I live in a rural village and the only way in is to fly, so getting a technician is difficult.
Good repair Steve. Don't you just love it when the customer tells you they only pressed that little red button once... Honest! The flames that ensue afterwards when the tech starts it back up tell a different story! Thanks for sharing the vid. -Jack
Nice Job Steve, I chanced out three of them last week, Think the cust hit the reset 10 or 12 times, Talk about a hot furnace, Just about had to call 911. Hate it when they do that.
its a nice rocket to go to the moon.lol would be nice have some big red stickers to stick on the primary control! Do not reset more than 2 times and 8 times you are asking for trouble!!!! LOL
What are the symptoms (upon operation of the furnace) of a failing transformer? My Riello was acting up. The diaphragm /fan would come on, then ignite but only for a second before failing to ignite. Then upon second attempt, it would ignite and run fine. Changed oil filter, cleaned out all carbon/soot build up, and cleaned nozzle. Seems fine now though
Look on the bright side Steven, it wasn't one of those "electronic transformers" you love LOL!! I haven't been able to comment on any of your videos while I was locked up for the last three days and nights at the hospital due to Juno. I'm back and "almost" caught up on my unread videos I missed over the last three days. Come on summer!!!
Hey Steve I have a similar issue mine comes on and trips the reset switch in like 30 seconds it almost seems as the same issue as this but I notice yours was tripping really quick I think I'm gonna try this
I got a riello 40 F15 with a 4GPH nozzle. It sprays fuel for 10 seconds before it tries to light then lights and after maybe 3 seconds of being lit it shuts off. I checked the electrodes they dont even try to start arcing till after that 10 seconds. Is the controller bad? I used a screw driver with the side cover off to bridge the gap and absolutly no spark till 10 seconds in then i hear another click and then it makes the arc. Its a 530se control box
Okay, this video was helpful and you are evidently regular experienced service man. Hubby and I live in a rural area, with limited selection. Service on our Becket model AFG has basically included nozzle and filter. Becket in their instructions has like 15 things to check. Our furnace has recently shut down, service came and replaced nozzle and filter, heater worked but we went away for 5 d that night. Temp was mild so we left temp at 50 while gone. Suddenly it got cold and had high winds and a power outage and when we came home furnace again did not work. Tried reset 2x, came on but seemed like no ignition. We pulled out the filter, it was filthy...cleaned it, but not flue. Not sure how to get in there. Heat exchangers were not cleaned. Inside, 250 gal oil tank is half full. So the question is, should these all the things on service instructions be told to the service man to do? He is newly promoted to his position..the former serviceman left :( We don't want to insult him, but 85 dollars for 15 min and no heat worries us...We were trying to see how you document and what you do on a call to compare. PS we think those cards you leave are an excellent idea! Any input would be most appreciated. Also, we have a distant shut off valve for oil filter replacement. It was not shut off when changing the filter...does that matter? Thanks.
Larry Cole ya tigerloog would be a great idea or a 1/2 line because of length .i am supriced the oil pump does not wine.. the oil flow was wimpy i have blowed out the line before and get the same results .but a tiger loop is a good fix for it i am only running a .75 80 degree nozzle in there and its a giant house, never a complaint . i tend to run smaller nozzles ,they get the job done for me ..and run cleaner /better ...yes i under fire them .
my oil fired forced hot air furnace is smoking through the inspection hole in the fire box and my house smells like a idling semi truck.,any idea what is causing this. I know I'm being vaig. but that's the only way to explain it. any help would be great.
might be a stupid question however Ill ask you anyway, once a oil burner fires up, does the transformer continue making the arc spark in front of the nozzle or not?
+Rondo Schiavoni some new controls drop the transformer out ,this one honeywell 8184g stays on all the time the motor and transformer are tied into the same line the orange . if the control has a seperate wire just for the transformer usally blue then it will drop out after start up
Mario Abas Jr. YES Mario that's what I wanted to know the big black ignition box transformer that sits on top of the whole unit does it stay on? on a say 20 year old burner.Kerosene in a mobile home type.
Depends on if its full time on or Like steve said some kick out after start up . Our old wiliamson transformer was constant on for 40 years and was replaced twice so no it would not burn em up
Hey Steve. Had a brand new Beckett Oil Burner mounted on a Utiica Keystone Boiler that just Passed inspection on installlation today 2/17/16. I told the inspector in had a 12 sec delay on ignition and inspector claimed that was normal on these burners which didnt make sense to me. I been working on burners 30 years on and off. Why load the chamber with fuel and then light it 12 sec later and hear the boom and the rumbling for another 8 seconds. Do the new ones have some kind of new electronic delay? Sounds flukey to me.
Did it have the Beckett clean cut pump with solenoid oil valve? Mine is set up for a 15 second valve-on delay, 15 seconds to prove flame and a 30 second post purge after the call for heat is satisfied. Once the call for heat is removed the oil valve closes and flame goes out a second or 2 later.
1/2” to the nozzle, 1/8” in front of the nozzle, 1/8” gap is a pretty good rule of thumb on residential oil burners. Sometimes the 1/8”ers can be 3/16”, but still a pretty good overall estimate.
I was testing one of these the other day on a no heat call. I accidentally grabbed my Milwaukee screwdriver where the metal goes through to the end. zap
Christian Isas try changing the pump filter first . or cleaning it in some oil . then try it again . is there a silinoin on pump??? maybe the silinion is bad if you have one .
Have filter then splits into two lines, one to furnace which works and the other to water heater burner which I am having the problem with. Everything was fine until I ran out of fuel. Put 10 gallons of diesel to hold me over till tomorrow, bleed furnace and it worked but water heater bleed it also but no fuel from gun line... Maybe a fuel level issue, just don't understand why the furnace would work and not water heater
I have an oil furnace. When I turn the heat up I can hear a muffled thump in the basement coming from the furnace, it has done this for a long time. Lately I've been hearing this thump not only just before startup but now it happens while the furnace is running, sometimes twice while running. Also, starting 2 days ago while the furnace is running we're getting an exhaust-like odor on the first floor only in a corner right over where the furnace is in the basement. It's pretty strong and when the furnace stops running it's very strong and then dissipates. I don't have the money for a repairman, could this be a leak somewhere? I don't smell it in the rest of the house, it's just in the area over the furnace. The basement smells as well but not as strong as right above the furnace on the 1st floor. There is no smoke in the house or basement, just the odor. It's not a raw oil smell, it's definitely an odor similar to very strong car exhaust. We only smell it when the furnace is running, when it turns off the odor takes about 15 m in to go away. My husband said he tried opening the flue a little more to see if that helps but all that happened is I smelled the stink even more. The area where I smell it is not only over the furnace but it is also next to the chimney on the 1st floor (we do not have a fireplace). I turned the thermostat down to keep the furnace from running too much and when I turned it down I heard the thump sound go off twice in a row. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions throw them this way. It's an old furnace, it was here when we bought the house 10 yrs ago, it not only heats the house but the hot water as well, we don't have a hot water heater. The other day I noticed what looked like steam coming out of my chimney but it was a very cold day, around maybe 10 degrees outside, so not sure if that's normal or related to this issue.
Anglynn74 mam call a oil burner man .to check out the unit please ,you could die from c.o. poising its not worth dieing over , call a service tech to find out whats going on .you need a good cleaning .thats the first step. you should never smell fumes in house . the fume should be going up the chimney . call someone before its to late ,,and your on the nightly news,,, people die from c.o. poising to cheap to call a repair man
steven lavimoniere thanks, do you know how much furnace repairmen on average charge? I have less then $50 right now, I'm on food stamps at the moment and cannot afford much. I am looking into an assistance program that helps with heating issues but waiting on that. I'm concerned the cost of the repairman with take everything I have. sounds stupid but I really have no funds. yes the co2 is a concern, it was my first concern, but I don't have the money, wondering if it's something we can fix ourselves.
Thank you...Your detailed explanation told me your vast understanding of AC circuitry,,,,,....for many like me ....Electricity,,,,is unseen unless you abuse it......further to say Electronics is invisible....wave patterns,,,,Radar,,,Sonar,,,Satellites,,,,cell phones....I had enough,,,I'm 65............don't need this ass age of kids[excluding you] telling me what's new.........
Allanson needs to put a lowercase "m" for milliamps they are implying mega amps by putting the capital "M". (sorry for the OCD remark I'm in engineering) But there is no way that trans. draws 23 MEGA AMPS of current because power = volts x amps = 10^4 V x 23 x 10^6 A = 230 GW or 230 billion watts. LOL and that's assuming a 100% efficient trans.
+Vlad Romanchenko water ,the boiler will leak when not maintaining temp. a lot of them will do that once there maintaining 160 there fine again no more leaks
@@stevenlavimoniere Do you mean the boiler has a crack or defect? Or normal leak from where exactly? My folks did this last week only from 2005. Seems to be okay now. Replaced the high hats and feeders but Dyer energy told them was a bad boiler. Dont trust them guys.
I recently put heating in my boiler 10/6/2018. I pressed the red ignition but to try get turn on but nothing is happening. Do you think you can give me an idea of what is causing it not to run?
hey man thanks for video i have a question i have bekett oil burner that keeps going into lock out put new filter on it and still does lock out. it was working for 10 min or so then i would have to hit reset button and eventually hold reset button for 30 seconds for it to reset then it would do the same thing over again until i took the valve off to see if it was calling for oil and it was but when i put it back on it just went into lock out so i lifted the ignition transformer open and it lit up as soon as i closed the ignition transformer it went out i know that was very dumb especially since i spilled a little oil when i removed the nozzle. so can you help me am i dealing with a bad ignition transformer? thank you
Can't understand what your saying or doing either for that matter! You mumble something while the burner is running noisely and then say nothing when its not (quiet). Old transformer's spark looked OK to me - good enough to ignite the oil.
Great videos Steven! Watching all of them and learning a ton. Thanks for showing the newer oil guys the ropes

It doesnt fill the chamber with oil during startup ..it builds oil pressure ..then ignites .all of those burners seem a little rough after ignition
Pretty wide gap on them electrodes. Looks like 7/16" need to be about 1/8" no more than a 1/4"
1/2” to the nozzle, 1/8” in front of the nozzle, 1/8” gap is a pretty good rule of thumb on residential oil burners. Sometimes the 1/8”ers can be 3/16”, but still a pretty good overall estimate.

Bernard Sobbe always better running along floor . but it will pump fine over head . that pump will pull like 6" of vac ..

how long before a transformer needs to be changed?? what is the cost of one and from where ??? help plz thanks
+buxchi i only replace them if needed there is no set time to die .test it to see if it works
Do the transformers last longer now that most are interrupted?
What are prices?
why snip the wires instead of just removing the wire nuts? you gotta remove them to install the new wires anyways.
looks like your using a regular screw driver to test the transformer. i been looking to buy an insulated one. does it really matter?
+MrVodkaHelps i just use a craftsman large screwdriver with big insulated handle never have gotten shocked yet
Same here, regular screwdriver works just be careful
good job,i think I would have changed the nozzle and checked the electrode settings
Joe Meehan i was there a few month earler why change the nozzle??? its been cleaned already
We were not there with you to see how to adjust them. That's why.
If I have fuel coming out of bleed screw and not out of gun line, do I need a new pump?
Christian Isas try changing the pump filter first . or cleaning it in some oil . then try it again . is there a silinoin on pump??? maybe the silinion is bad if you have one .
Have filter then splits into two lines, one to furnace which works and the other to water heater burner which I am having the problem with. Everything was fine until I ran out of fuel. Put 10 gallons of diesel to hold me over till tomorrow, bleed furnace and it worked but water heater bleed it also but no fuel from gun line... Maybe a fuel level issue, just don't understand why the furnace would work and not water heater

LOL and that's assuming a 100% efficient trans.
OMG... oil bleeding and you hit the transformer... wimpy transformer.... rofl
How long does a tank of oil last on average?
***** depends on the size of house and system ..
12 + years for a transformer , not bad!!!
kevin kellner it lasted a while
is that an oil spill in front of the burner after service? or is that water?
+Vlad Romanchenko water ,the boiler will leak when not maintaining temp. a lot of them will do that once there maintaining 160 there fine again no more leaks
+steven lavimoniere good to know, i noticed mine did this when i had it shut off for a few hours.
Sucks to pay high fuel prices
i like videos keep on coming i like beckett burner??? i'm up north??
Augie DaSilva thanks for the comment
hey man thanks for video i have a question i have bekett oil burner that keeps going into lock out put new filter on it and still does lock out. it was working for 10 min or so then i would have to hit reset button and eventually hold reset button for 30 seconds for it to reset then it would do the same thing over again until i took the valve off to see if it was calling for oil and it was but when i put it back on it just went into lock out so i lifted the ignition transformer open and it lit up as soon as i closed the ignition transformer it went out i know that was very dumb especially since i spilled a little oil when i removed the nozzle. so can you help me am i dealing with a bad ignition transformer? thank you
+John Harris first best to call in a pro ,it could be a lot of things to many to list on a email .
pretty sure this is what's wrong with my furnace i have been fighting it all winter.
Steve,
I have 120vac before the just before the transformer. I get no arc and no reading off the conductors. Is this a toast transformer? No flame.
+Jim Conner i am not there to check it. not sure if you did it right.
Got it, it was the igniter... Replaced it and it fired right up!
Heavy breather

This guy sound like he’s in pain…
Can't understand what your saying or doing either for that matter! You mumble something while the burner is running noisely and then say nothing when its not (quiet). Old transformer's spark looked OK to me - good enough to ignite the oil.
