    A LifeGuard in the box before the Blues and Royals arrived this morning was not allowing anyone to step inside the paved tram lines on the ground either side or the box arch. He enforced it efficiently and consistently and it really worked.

      So I’m thinking the horse guards get to decide who gets to touch his horse and who doesn’t….it may not seem fair but that’s just the bottom line. It’s hard not to agree that it’s not a good look to have the exceptions right in front of the tourists that were just told No…but it is complicated just as you suggest. Thank you John for another great commentary and video.

    I am ex- military and military wife. A family goes through as much if not more whilst husband/family member is deployed, especially when family issues arise. The wife must do it all. So families ‘serve’ as well, and having the small privilege of touching horse should be accepted but behind closed doors. The public would have the immediate reaction of calling ‘foul’, failing to realize whom this civilian touching horse might be, as they are in ‘selfish vacation mode’ and the elevator doesn’t always go to the top.
    As for the police having this privilege, it is important to both the horse and the officer to have a familiarity with each other. These officers step in when horse is anxious or nervous, helping both the soldier and the horse to calm as well as protecting the public. If a horse didn’t have a sense of security with the officers, it would only add to the horses reactions and anxiety. Horses can be very skittish, but they also have a sense of who they can trust.

    • @christinewood8927
      @christinewood8927 16 днів тому

      Nope the families should always be allowed to touch the horses. I think the British public would not begrudge them that and never refer to them as being in selfish vacation mode duh.

      @sandraback7809 totally agree - apparently some family/partners/friends of today have no problem in showing disregard/disrespect of the hundreds of years of the Horse Guards' history and the Rules -
      the guard is only in the sentry box for an hour, doesn't work 24/7, and apparently doesn't have gumption to tell her not to embarrass him while he's in front of the public while he's on duty, she's a girlfriend, not his wife therefore not 'legally' a 'relative' of the guard with 'special privileges' (imho) -
      no wife/partner/family member of a U.S. military person would ever think of doing something like what happened here, the consequences would be dire -

      @@battles146 Exactly……This is Horse Guards. It is a military post/base/barracks. These are professional soldiers carrying out ceremonial duties. It is not an army equivalent of a Harry Potter type tourist attraction.
      I expect I sound a bit stuffy😄…….but I am proud of my family’s history of service on land and sea. I am proud of our Army, Navy (Royal and Merchant ) and the RAF. Perhaps it’s an age thing. I grew up with grandparents and parents who grew up during WW11🤷‍♀️. I heard the stories……

      @@sandraback7809 exactly! I'm also proud of the men on my paternal side who served in our U.S. Navy, my father was a submarine radio tech during WW2 - I remember his telling me about the times he was transferred to a different sub and the one he had been on being sunk by the germans the next time it went out, saying he was always one step ahead of death - thankfully both older and younger half brother served in less dangerous times - my husband served in the Air Force during the korean 'war' debacle - but they all understood 'duty' and the potential consequences of not following rules -
      I know that this 'modern' world is somewhat different, however being a researcher for 30+ years, my feathers get ruffled when younger generations are ignorant of/or choose to ignore the ancestral histories, duties and rules followed, the ultimate sacrifices, etc; showing a sense of 'entitlement' they are 'untouchable' to what's happening around them in this world today - my rant for the day 😂 - Stay Blessed

      I agree. Say a trooper was on duty elsewhere, such as Buckingham Palace - would a girlfriend be permitted to walk up to her boyfriend there? Or even if he is the gate man - they would not go through the arches to talk to their partner. It should be no different when one is on a horse. Plus, it takes his concentration away from doing his job.

To me it was obvious he worked there and they knew each other as they were laughing when a tourist yelled out well he touched the horse( angrily) this man had been told prior no touching when the trouper said quite loud, he works here so he’s allowed, the man backed off😂

    It ought to be apparent that the police touching and interacting with the horses and their riders ought be seen as a necessity. It is another level of security. The horses clearly recognize and trust the police officers and see them every day. The officers may have to interact with them when there is a problem or emergency.

I personally like to see the interaction and the guard having a breather, whilst still working. But in public, they prob. shouldn't touch the horse because it gives the wrong message to the masses. And this girlfriend is not being discreet at all. In a way making her friends job harder moving forward. But then again, the horse probably likes it if s/he knows the person. We should get on the coordination committee 😉🙃

    John, Congrats on passing the 80k mark!! Nice to see people not touching the horses and troopers making them stick to rules. except that last trooper...very disappointed in him. i don't have a problem with the police or people known or related to trooper touching the horse. if i see someone talking with the trooper, i know they are not "just" a tourist or normal citizen, so i wouldn't get in a snit over them touching the horse, when i can't!! i mean, citizens and tourists can't/shouldn't have a conversation with the trooper either, so why should touching the horse rule be any different. regular citizens and tourists aren't part of the Cavalry or military, so they shouldn't be allowed to touch!! the horses aren't a petting zoo, they are troopers too! the police work with the military and help protect the troopers and horses, so they should be allowed to touch, as well. get over it citizens and tourists!! lol

    Off duty service personel should set an example. If they want to speak with their boyfriend/girlfriend/partner and they are in civilian attire, then go to the stables to see them. If they themselves are in uniform then, yes approach them, and yes, touch the horse by all means.. Tourons wont know the difference. Another scenario, would they go into the archway and chat to the gatesman, and mebees tickle him under his chin, would they approach one of the guardsmen in Winsor Castle, the answer is a BIG FAT NO! so why are they doing it front of house. Criticism of the guards is unfair and not warranted. Members of the public do not get to tell our Armed Services what they should and should not do. The Guards don't get to decide for themselves they FOLLOW ORDERS that's called military discipline and it's not that difficult of a concept. Screaming at tourists is not a good look they have been told not to do it before then that was rescinded when it was obvious the tourists were once again out of control. It seems likely they have again been told not to do it to assess how the new signage will work.
