Love this movie. The only upset was the white savior moment where Taraji's boss knocks down the bathroom sign. NEVER HAPPENED. She just used to use it and call it a day.
On top of that, Kevin Costner's character is completely made up. He's not based on any real-life leader at NASA. The insistence on adding a white savior to every story that touches on racial segregation just so white audiences can find the story more "palatable" is tired.
Yeah, in reality Mary Jackson was the one who went through the bathroom situation. Katherine was actually more uncaring about the bathroom segregation thing even when she was reminded about it. Feels like irl Katherine is much more badass

The Right Stuff is a movie you should watch, it’s about the astronauts during the same time as this movie. There’s a mini series and a documentary with the same name as well that are newer. Also phenomenal
Hidden Figures is one of those movies I don’t mind watching every month it’s a shame Taraji didn’t get an Oscar for this role. ESPECIALLY how she has been speaking out lately about the business
I love the moment when Katherine finishes the calculations on the chalk board, in the conference room, and the look on Paul Stafford’s face. It is the moment he finally realizes that he is NOT the smartest person in the room. 😊
I am blessed to work at the same NASA facility in Virginia - they have named the computing building after Katherine Johnson. i drive by it every time I go to my office.
When this movie first came out all of the girls in my extended family went to see it in theaters. All my cousins, second cousins, and so on. We took up 3 rows. After that Hidden Figures became my comfort movie. I can put it on and know I’ll enjoy and be captivated by it.

I was just thinking about this movie the other day. I already know that I'm going to love this reaction! 😊 Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, and Glen Powell all did a phenomenal job playing their historical characters. I also love Mahershala Ali, Jim Paraon, Kirsten Dunst's characters. The book is fantastic. 53:14 - 53:22 Fun Fact: According to the director's commentary on the dvd, when researching for this movie he learned that John Glenn really did make that call to NASA. And waited for Katherine Johnson's calculations before taking off. I definitely recommend the book. Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
Other women who were "computers" went on to do great things in the space program, including training astronauts to regulate physical aspects (blood pressure, pulse etc.) and working with flight technology.
john glen did actually request for Kathrine to check the numbers. she also worked on the numbers for Apollo 11 and was a help in saving Apollo 13 with her calculations
I said the same thing. I think her colouring did help in the fact that she was more accepted and didn't feel the segregation in the workplace as opposed to someone darker. It's very important that we take into consideration intersectionality when looking at these issues.
This soundtrack and score is phenomenal. Pharrell wrote all of these sings that sounded like they could have been 60s pop songs, and all the score is Hans Zimmer. I saw this in the theater and bawled like a baby.
I think the point of the movie was not making an accurate description of what happened, but a dramatized story that intertwined the actual lives of three previously unrecognized stars of the space program, mostly unknown before the movie.
I like having the TV on in the background when I'm doing "tasks". One day I had this movie on in the background and very quickly went from my task to looking up to watch what's happening, to sitting in my chair full blown invested in this movie. I love this movie so much and to this day if I see it playing on TV I'll put it on no matter what part it's on.
I love this movie so much. When I was in university in the early 90's, for my Industrial Engineering classes there were only 4 of us women out of 120 students. I had a professor tell me directly to my face that women did not belong in Industrial Engineering. We ended up getting into a yelling match in the middle of the hallway, with students going around us on their way to their next classes. Midterms were coming up, and he told me he was going to flunk me regardless of what I got and also tell all of my other professors to flunk me as well, as i did not deserve to be in that program. I told him I was going to get an A on his test, then hunt him down and shove my test down his throat (the fight had gotten really heated by then). I memorized 150 pages of calculations, constants and facts for that test, and when it was time to take the test, I was the first one done. I had an almost perfect score - half a point was taken off because I was 0.1 off a starting figure so my answer was wrong, but my shown calculations were correct. When I went to my professor's office afterward and told him what i got on his midterm, he said, " Good - you can stay in the program. This is the fire you are going to need to be a female Engineer in manufacturing."
This movie, and the women and their stories behind it are phenomenal. No other word comes close. Such a great cast of smart, strong women, playing smart, strong women is my favourite kind of movie to watch.
The bathroom scenes really got to me. You must realize that not only did she have to run about a quarter of a mile to another building, she did it in heels AND a girdle. It probably took her 10 minutes to pull that thing back up each time.
You misunderstood the "Are you a spy?" scene. He wasn't harshly accusing her, he was asking her just to show the other guy how ridiculous the whole idea was.
I have no doubt that people really did stand outside trying to see what was happening. There's a magic to space flight. I remember all the years I lived in Florida, every time we knew a shuttle was going up, you'd see people stopping work and going outside to watch it go up, and with good visibility, you could see it from a few hundred miles away. It was even more breathtaking when they'd have a night launch. I had the privilege to see the last night launch of the program from the causeway at Cocoa Beach, FL (we didn't manage to get all the way to the Cape in time). When I tell you it was like night turned to day, it was so bright? It was an absolutely magnificent.
What I love the most with historical movies like that, it's when they use original footages and show pictures of the real characters and what happened to them after the events of the movie. The real Katherine Johnson was the last Hidden Figures who was still alive when the movie came out. She died in 2020 at the age of 101

First the Mercury (one crewman) then the Gemini (two crewmen) then Apollo (three crewmen). And most of the world held its breath waiting to see if Apollo 13 would get back. What I felt most after I saw this movie was resentment that no one knew about these hidden figures. I had difficulty with math when I was a kid and the belief was that girls weren't good at math. I probably wouldn't have given up so easily if there had been role models out there. No, it was not a documentary. Yes, it was fictionalized but definitely inspiration for a lot of girls out there.
Your comment about colorism being the potential reason why Mrs. Katherine Johnson didn't "feel" racism at NASA, although she knew it was there, is 1000% valid. Colorism can definitely influence how harsh or severe one experiences racism.
The most distressing part for this reaction was the idea that the only reason the real women didn't encounter the horrific racism as shown in the movie was the possibility they were "light skinned". The self hatred of dark skin tone in African Americans is tragic.
I was alive when this happened, and what I noticed about this movie was that no one smoked. During this period of time, everyone smoked everywhere , at their desks, at church picnics, in grocery stores, at the library, absolutely everywhere. I understand why they did not show it in the movie, but that bit is historically inaccurate.
Question to Aaron: Would YOU have run to help her in that situation if you had been there, standing behind those guys as on observer? Or, would you have reacted as you did just now
this is so unnexpected! i'm so glad you're checking this movie, one of my favs! the bathroom scene gives me chills every time also, the new set/background looks insanely good!
*"It's classified information!..."* *"It's Top Secret!!"* They're making it super clear - they're "afraid" - that her brain's calculations is as worthy, or more, as the IBM mainframe!
Omg, I clicked sooo fast! I always loved everything Taraji did. However, for me, this set her apart from many actors and actresses for me. She went from really good to really freaking great!
58:36 Another great space movie that also shows people watching the sky is ‘October Sky’ with Jake Gyllenhaal. If you guys haven’t seen it yet, it would be another one that would be great to see for a reaction.
This is one of my fave movies of all time. I’ve watched it so many times. And what’s even more wonderful is that it’s based in reality…. It really should’ve got more awards…
The "White savior/saving" thing is true in some cases across the world.. It's not necessary to be a white, any upper class person who go against there own community's wrong doings will fit that role. In some situations and places the lower class people cant up rise or initiate change without the help of a upper class person.. You can see many historic events started by upper class people for the good of other community.. feeling embarrassed and shaming them for their good action defeats the end goal.

It was segregated, she just don't care
It was at one point.
1:15:54 “i don’t know… no i mean i do know” LMAOOOO i felt that all too well
Taraji P Henson not nominated for the Oscar award is just maddening
Mr. Harris never actually took down the sign from the bathroom but he told them they can use the bathrooms.
Question to Aaron: Would YOU have run to help her in that situation if you had been there, standing behind those guys as on observer? Or, would you have reacted as you did just now
Pharrell Williams, who did much of the soundtrack, is from the area in Virginia where all this happened
I’m an old white Grandma in my 70’s, and I’m loving your reaction to one of my favorite movies! 😘
this is so unnexpected! i'm so glad you're checking this movie, one of my favs! the bathroom scene gives me chills every time
also, the new set/background looks insanely good!
Especially proud as all three of these amazing women were members of my sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha. Great movie and hidden figures no more.
*"It's classified information!..."* *"It's Top Secret!!"* They're making it super clear - they're "afraid" - that her brain's calculations is as worthy, or more, as the IBM mainframe!
The call really happened "THE SMART ONE"💯💯💯Its a beautiful well made movie❤❤❤
Omg, I clicked sooo fast! I always loved everything Taraji did. However, for me, this set her apart from many actors and actresses for me. She went from really good to really freaking great!
19:43 That shovel motion was so appropriate 🤣
This reaction is a little too Mystery Science Theater 3000 for such an important movie.
This is actually a pretty good film, I had to watch for College Homework once
I had to watch this and write a summary as a way to get extra credit in high school and I really enjoyed it!
58:36 Another great space movie that also shows people watching the sky is ‘October Sky’ with Jake Gyllenhaal. If you guys haven’t seen it yet, it would be another one that would be great to see for a reaction.
This is a fantastic movie stellar cast with incredible performances even time I see this movie on tv I drop everything to watch it
I loved this movie. Saw it when it came out in theaters. Rewatched it at my college campus theater the day after Katherine Johnson passed away. 😢
The fact that this is based on a true story is amazing lol.
Your reaction was 80% disrespectful to the movie and story.
Wish you didn't go in that direction.
Yeah the sarcasm that's supposed to mock those types doesn't work in a movie to honor the victims of it
One of my favorite historical dramas...these ladies were phenomenal!!!
So happy to see Greg and Aaron react to this movie! This is a great true story movie! 👍
This is one of my fave movies of all time. I’ve watched it so many times. And what’s even more wonderful is that it’s based in reality….
It really should’ve got more awards…
Another wonderful movie of "hidden figures" is Something the Lord Made. Mos Def and Alan Rickman are a great team.
A lot of people dont want to see this and think it happen. It did. Always remember that. Laws dont mean crap.
Gregg your sarcasm. Dial it down a little
Probably a defense mechanism that comes out more in reactions where he’s expected or expects himself to be more sensitive.
@@cdubbartyeah i understand but dang
@@tym8792the men these days are too soft and offend easily. And it’s also weird since they’ve never lived and experienced those times.
Loved your reaction to this beautiful buried story.
This movie is one of my all time time favorites. Hidden Figured and The Help. Loved them!
I'm pretty sure I cried when I first saw this movie. Can't wait to get in all my feels.
@ReelRejects thank you for the reaction... this along with other American history movies are my fave, even though im from NZ
