She walks me home
There's a Mercedes parked in our street
So we stop and we discuss
Who on earth the owner could be
That's just like me
I'd evade waking up if the alarm wouldn't ring
I'd walk into quick sand
If I knew how far I'd sink
Twin layers of trouble
Two times that might
Twin layers of lightning
Both of us can strike
We went into a club
Bouncers got no brains
He said both of you are barred
I had to set him straight
Listen Jack, don't you know, I'm a star
(chorus)
Some people have no money
While other people have no tact
If they invite us around
Well they're going to get a double act
We scream and we shout
And then we love and we turn
Then we set a chair on fire
And we watch the whole house burn
(chorus)
It's written in big letters
Graffiti all over town
It says TROUBLEMAKERS ON THE RUN
And both our names are written down
Oh but infamy or fame
Each came in a small dose
I just wish the day would come
When the last one would be so close
Grant should also be credited for the fantastic guitar playing in this song, one of the things that make it. In one of his interviews, Forster remarks how Grant played unbelievably here and had him impressed.
i could listen to that song for hours floating in my room:)
This song is beyond compare, there is nothing to else like it - listen Jack, I'm A Star!
This puts me in a mind space that few songs do!
They were bloody awesome live too. I so miss them
Incomparable!
Sounds like he's channeling Tom Verlaine/Television
indeed he was
Not only here, you can see him doing just that visually on one occasion in the Right here video from the Tallulah album and sonically again in the fabulous track You cant say no forever from their last album.
Better than timeless ! :----
The video really complements the song. Not sure why it works but it does.
@zonqor As far as I can remember it was a film about car design - sorry, it was an age ago!
hell yes da bomb bass line... such a sexy ass sawng... luv u go betweenz
my feelings exactly. steamy. sultry. sexy.
'Listen Jack , don't you know I'm a star?Brilliant album too, much too literate though for the mass record buying public back in 85'
Between the two of them, one day they might.
grant mclennan seems to often get more love from go-betweens fans, but robert forster always had the edge for me. for lack of a better comparison, i think of him as the lennon to grant's mccartney; his songs may not necessarily be as catchy or pretty, but they're often more interesting to me because of their jagged edges. this song is a great example of that. and whatever the video is, somehow it fits.
The weirdest thing is that I could never tell which was which. I always thought Grant was writing the songs I liked best like this one, spring rain, clouds, dive for your memory, can't say no forever. Only after reading his autobiography, I realized that Robert was the writer I was liking best. Not so say Grant's stuff isn't great either.
@bonepaper I completely agree, though another thing is true as well: both Grant and Robert as solo artists were far from being as good as they were as partners in the Go-Bes. I LOVE Batchelor kisses and Apology accepted as much as Part company and Spring rain, to just name but a few. It was a brilliant competition! But Twin layers is my fave, ´coz it so perfectly captures the spirit of a wonderful moonlit night..."and then we love and we turn...".
i agree 100% . now grant has gone i've appreciated him more. but i still think robert's songs are more interesting.
This is the first time i see how they are stealing my airplane car...please bring it back...
At 3:36, I expected to see Homer driving. Anyway, one of the stand-out songs on a great album.
Wonderfully irrelevant video ;-)
There is another version of this song played live on Snap, i can't find it here on UA-cam
I uploaded the whole Snap album a while back, but youtube doesn't approve :(
Any info on the video? I'm wondering If It's taken from an actual movie..
