It was never a secret in my family about my dad's side and their indigenous heritage, but it just wasn't really discussed due to how it was frowned upon in the past and how my grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother, etc. had to try to either hide or avoid the cultural topics out of fear. My dad's side of the family actually changed their first names, altered their last names, and moved frequently across (mostly eastern and central) Canada in attempts to keep their families safe, together, And hidden from the government's agency who were forcing children into residential schools. I don't know how they did it, but for the most part, it worked to their advantage. Sadly, my grandmother died in silence when she had so much history and knowledge to share with us because of Canada's oppressive and dark colonial history. 😔 I took it upon myself to do the family research, building up our family tree as a gift for my dad. The things I discovered were incredible and priceless. I share every cultural tradition with my daughter and husband (who's Métis), we pick and make medicines together, we visit the reservation, we share our knowledge and history proudly, and continue to learn more every day. This cultural and traditional knowledge is precious and absolutely cannot be lost! As hard as the settlers tried to erase and assimilate us, they utterly failed. Making the land, the Great Creator, and our ancestors proud by passing on our knowledge is of utmost importance to me when it comes to my family, and especially my only daughter. 😊💕

I am not native but having an indigenous Maori Aunty (adopted) and learning about history and stories passed down was a beautiful experience. I think all humans should look into others cultures to learn and understand. They have the most beautiful ways of looking at life and loving the land and each other, a lot of people could learn so much from the native peoples of the land. There are ethnic groups in Europe and all over the world. The Saami of Norway for example, they live such a similar lifestyle to the Iñupiaq. But if you don’t live for your culture and ancestors, you are not ethnic. The only reason you would hate on this comment is because you have no cultural background. As a Native Alaskan, I too love and embrace other cultures who have the same passion and love for the rich history behind us.

I love seeing these videos about cultures reclaiming the traditions that were outlawed not so long ago. Those chin tattoos are absolutely beautiful. One question I have came from when they were praying over their food. With such a love for her ancestors, I was surprised to hear "amen". A video on how they view Christianity in that context would be really fascinating.

I am an indigious girl from the North of Kamchatka and my people believe that our relatives live across Bering Strait. Both of my grandmothers had facial tattoos, although those tattoos covered not only chins but also represented two parallel lines all the way down from the forehead to the tip of the nose and pair of parallel lines on the sides of the face. Men were not that much tattood, my granddad had only "+" signs on both sides of the mouth. I asked my mom whether there was any deep meaning about those tattoos, she said that it was thought to be beautiful)
The lines all the way down were traditionally a young girl's first Indigenous markings symbolizing maturity (ie. successful training in ena and being capable of raising a family - these lines down the nose in conjunct with the chin depicted the skill and value a young woman / woman had. The more the chin lines, the more a man wanted her as a hunter / gatherer partner in Indigenous culture) and, while the young man's + markings were the mark of the first successful whale a young man killed also symbolizing maturity. ♥
when the Europeans came to the U.S they were all forced to give up their culture and adapt to being American, it happened to my family so i really appreciate your strength in taking back your heritage!

There a few things I admire about your culture. How the women are so strong & how your community take care of your elders. I'm Native American & what the white man did to are ansecaries was very bad. Bringing diseases into the communities & killing 100s of them. I don't think anyone has the right to tell your community how or who is demonic. That's left up to God in my opinion. I was also raised in a church, but what I can remember as a young child I don't know of anyone pushing there religion on anyone. Not even my 2 Grandmothers which are Assembly of God. My Dad drank all the time & she didn't never say 1 word to him. And my Mothers Mom husband, my Grandfather, drank also & she never said anything to him either. So maybe I just didn't see them fight. But I was always @ one or the others house spending the night. Maybe I was blessed & had 2 Great Grandmothers? I'm still happy that you are trying to keep your roots alive. That's nice to see. Just because your white doesn’t mean you don’t have culture. Where are your roots? Norway, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Scotland? I could go on. ALL of those countries have RICH ethnic backrounds- despite being primarily white ethnically. Just wanted to clear the air of “only POC have culture” because it’s just not true. There is white magic like there is black magic. There is beauty in EVERYONES past. Embrace it. Don’t feel bad for not having dark skin like I did for so long. It’s okay.

I am Maori from Aotearoa/New Zealand and Maori women are starting to get Moko Kauae which is similar to your chin tattoo. It is also only to be done by women for women. Males are starting to get Moko Kanohi which is a full or half face tattoo and trying to normalise it in Aotearoa/New Zealand again.
They got it from Asia. It was practiced throughout North and south east asia. Any group of people who migrated from Asia from 8000 years ago carried it with them. The south western China people in Myanmar and nagaland people have women tattoo their chen too but is being banned by government.

I have ink which for me tells my story, lots of blues in my chest plate, creature Teachers & flora but Scottish Women are bringing forth Inked Skin. I love seeing these videos about cultures reclaiming the traditions that were outlawed not so long ago. Those chin tattoos are absolutely beautiful. One question I have came from when they were praying over their food. With such a love for her ancestors, I was surprised to hear "amen". A video on how they view Christianity in that context would be really fascinating.

You can erase the culture all you want but the ancestors will ALWAYS come back whether you like it or not. There's always a person in the younger generations who will stand up and know the truth and carry the legacy
I am an indigious girl from the North of Kamchatka and my people believe that our relatives live across Bering Strait. Both of my grandmothers had facial tattoos, although those tattoos covered not only chins but also represented two parallel lines all the way down from the forehead to the tip of the nose and pair of parallel lines on the sides of the face. Men were not that much tattood, my granddad had only "+" signs on both sides of the mouth. I asked my mom whether there was any deep meaning about those tattoos, she said that it was thought to be beautiful)
The lines all the way down were traditionally a young girl's first Indigenous markings symbolizing maturity (ie. successful training in ena and being capable of raising a family - these lines down the nose in conjunct with the chin depicted the skill and value a young woman / woman had. The more the chin lines, the more a man wanted her as a hunter / gatherer partner in Indigenous culture) and, while the young man's + markings were the mark of the first successful whale a young man killed also symbolizing maturity. ♥

There a few things I admire about your culture. How the women are so strong & how your community take care of your elders. I'm Native American & what the white man did to are ansecaries was very bad. Bringing diseases into the communities & killing 100s of them. I don't think anyone has the right to tell your community how or who is demonic. That's left up to God in my opinion. I was also raised in a church, but what I can remember as a young child I don't know of anyone pushing there religion on anyone. Not even my 2 Grandmothers which are Assembly of God. My Dad drank all the time & she didn't never say 1 word to him. And my Mothers Mom husband, my Grandfather, drank also & she never said anything to him either. So maybe I just didn't see them fight. But I was always @ one or the others house spending the night. Maybe I was blessed & had 2 Great Grandmothers?

White kid here. Just want to say whatever culture you come from is beautiful and I wanted to remind my white siblings that ITS OKAY to be white. Just because your white doesn’t mean you don’t have culture. Where are your roots? Norway, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Scotland? I could go on. ALL of those countries have RICH ethnic backrounds- despite being primarily white ethnically. Just wanted to clear the air of “only POC have culture” because it’s just not true. There is white magic like there is black magic. There is beauty in EVERYONES past. Embrace it. Don’t feel bad for not having dark skin like I did for so long. It’s okay.

This practice of women face tattooing is extremely popular in rural Afghanistan, then if you think about it, Afghanistan is close to Russian Siberia (Soviet Union) where native people originated from. We are all connected one way or the other if you think about it.

I am Maori from Aotearoa/New Zealand and Maori women are starting to get Moko Kauae which is similar to your chin tattoo. It is also only to be done by women for women. Males are starting to get Moko Kanohi which is a full or half face tattoo and trying to normalise it in Aotearoa/New Zealand again.
They got it from Asia. It was practiced throughout North and south east asia. Any group of people who migrated from Asia from 8000 years ago carried it with them. The south western China people in Myanmar and nagaland people have women tattoo their chen too but is being banned by government.

Beautiful & strong Women, i am Native to Scotland which makes me white skinned however if anyone knows our history, you will know the generational Trauma is the same. I have ink which for me tells my story, lots of blues in my chest plate, creature Teachers & flora but Scottish Women are bringing forth Inked Skin. Despite my skin color, my hope is that Women of every culture will rise up adorned with Ink & unite for Earth. This was a really enlightening post, humbling.
