Shh is the sound a mother makes to comfort her crying child. So she in her lowest point in life and she seeks the comfort of her mom through her subconscious. S.H.H. is 3 person, S is IU, H is the daughter, H is H’s daughter. H’s daughter is the woman driver at the end, continuing the eternal loop of seeking mother for comfort. IU wasnt close to her mom growing up so shes an enigma to her but once she reached 30’s she now understands her mom, and she got “the same eyes as her” meaning she gets her now, her perspective, why she wasnt with IU growing up. Cause they were in poverty and she had to work.

I got the feeling of inception in this mv. Daughter who built a prison in her mind to have her forever but see someone exactly like her, follow her hand connect to each other, show her her memory of her mother who she hid, and the other person is also similar, she hid her friend away, she shows her in the back of the car. I think as in inception, it's about people who passed away and others always keep some memories from them and even sometimes even lost in those memories like these two.

I got the feeling of The Age of Adaline (2015) where IU (Adaline) stop aging, so she flee away from her daughter (Tang Wei) to keep her safe from those who might seek for their immortal secret. Yet IU is discreetly watch out for her daughter while Tang Wei has been looking for her mom all these times until she found someone looks exactly like her mom before her mom left her, not realising that is actually her mom. Not until IU unveiled the truth about her stop aging secret which she hid away in the basement, because Tang Wei now has reach IU age when she stop aging, such fates has fall on Tang Wei now, so IU share the truth with her daughter. And this secret continue with Tang Wei daughter in the future too.

Hyein is 15, IU 30, Joe Won Sun 51 and Patti Kim 86 - 4 generations.
The complexity of mother-daughter relationships, being in love, growing apart, rediscovering similarities.
I agree the working girl is a possible specific version of a difficult relationship - keep quiet about her mother - sh...
Equally, don't talk about the family, they fell on hard times - IU lived with her grandmother for a while.
IU has been imbibing her lyrics with lots and lots of layers for many years.
I think you got a lot more of it than most. Thanks
If you want to know how complex IU's lyrics get I recommend watching:

My take on this beautiful mv
    IU is the mother
    Tang Wei is the daughter
Tang Wei was on the Morbius Strip when she saw her mother.
The Morbius Strip is a loop where the past and the present meet.
Tang Wei's reaction was shock -as she is seeing her mother (present in a younger form)
If you can see she looks unsettled even to the point when they get to the room.
In the room, there's a photo of a younger IU and a young girl (Tang Wei).
IU discovered the door to the floor and opened it.
Tang Wei smiled shyly feeling pleased of what was discovered.
It was a memory of her mother (younger IU) and her. They were looking at each other lovingly, surrounded by flowers. It was a beautiful memory of the past that Tang Wei hid or kept away to keep safe.
IU also showed Tang Wei that she saved a memory of her - but was kept at the car trunk. To me I think this symbolizes how mothers want to keep their daughters safe but in fact are suffocating them.
The rest of the video shows how the two became warm towards one another, fixing her hair, holding hands, helping her get up. This is the point where they are the same phase in their lives and they now understand each other.
It happens again towards the end to another lady on a car, symbolizing that it is something that a lot of mothers and daughters go through.

you should watch her latest interview she did with her mom (she is very much alive) about "Shh". Her mom is a big component in the song but also other people from her past.

I don’t think the song is purely about mom and daughter. In an interview, IU said she’s singing about her mom, while Hyein is singing about her friend (2nd verse), and Wonsun is singing about a mentor (3rd verse). IU wrote all the lyrics, so maybe the characters in the video represent all aspects of certain female relationships in her life.

Big fan of IU and love this song. The MV is beautiful but a bit too confusing (and have to think some of that was deliberate as it probably is a personal story). We know that IU was separated from her parents at a young age and had to live with her grandmother (because her mom, I understand, co-signed on some debt that ended up leading the family into bankruptcy). IU spoke in an episode of Dingo (fan meeting with another upcoming female soloist singer) about how she resented her mother growing up...but eventually realized that her mother must have felt horrible and really had nobody to 'lean on' - and it was only at that point IU spoke about restoring her relationship with her mom (and encouraged the other girl to do the same as her parents had gotten divorced and IU appealed to her to 'be there' for her mother). By all accounts, IU and her mom now seem to be quite close (and many accounts of IU's special relationship with her grandmother also).
In terms of the MV - the Mobius Strip reference is surely key for the reasons you point out, and in a letter from the actress opposite IU in the MV written to IU (which has been shared), she is playing the daughter - and IU the mother. You'll notice in the MV several other details. Some scenes are filmed with a red backlight, and some with a blue backlight. If you look closely, you'll see IU is wearing two different color shoes (one is red, one is blue). You'll also notice that the same scene with IU is outside the car is filmed from two perspectives (different sides of street)...and one scene has her in passenger seat, with other her in driver's seat. Even the items hanging from the rear view mirror are relevant (leaf from family tree, three feathers, etc). You'll also notice in one scene filmed in the apartment (which is from a different time - suggesting the daughter has gone back to see her mother when she was younger and look at her not just as 'mom' but also as a person with her own identity)...in one scene, IU (mom) is on her knees while the daughter is above her, and then the daughter goes to her level where they see what appears to be a common memory from childhood - one showing the two lovingly together...and other quickly showing the daughter not there. Then near the end of the story, the mom is standing while the daughter remains on her knees before the two come back together and appear to 'see' one another and embrace - suggesting they understand one another. The final scene with a different car and what appears a different mother and daughter does appear to take place even earlier, judging by the clothes...and it likely meant to be IU (the mom) as the daughter on the sidewalk...suggesting things just repeat themselves. All of this is just guesswork, of course.

Brilliant… because so many have glossed over it, or generalized about relationships between women and or generations, it took me a week to figure out this streetwalker thing… the skirt underneath furry coat is also like a blinged out party dress… regardless of the reason for estrangement, separation or trauma… the story is so moving… the Long haired youthful woman (from the bed) reunited with her now grown daughter

Thank you for reacting to IU and your diligence effort at decoding IU's MV'. There are plenty more like them, some not as deep and others even more complex in certain ways, as an example the use of color in BBIBBI.
IU also will use more than 1 MV to tell a story. Her MV You & I was released in 2011. It is like these in lenght and production. She however was not in control of her music at that time. That song deals with a l9ve interest who is in a coma or a state in which he is present mentally. So IU finishes building a time machine that her grandfather had started and sets the time to December 31st 2019, 8 years in to future.
In 2019, she releases her album Love Poem which has 2 tracks that continue that story. The first is Above the Time. The 2 young lovers are now both in the same time but exist in different dimensions. One event in this video is used in the next video that is one way that connects them. The event is shown with a cup of water/tea/coffee where you can see that there is a vibration, which a disruption in the Time space continuum that allows the 2 to be together for a short time.
The 2nd track is Blueming. Where it starts with the vibration that wsjes IU up and she seems to know what that means. In this video the 2 are in the same time and Dimension but are separated by a wall. But they can communicate with each other using cell phones. This video ends like Above the Time with the possibility of them final being together.
Then 2021 she released the single Strawberry Moon. Which some believe, we among them, is the final chapter. It being released in 2021 is 10 years after the story started. In it we see IU 's alarm going off reminding her that it's the Strawberry Moon. She is waiting for the promised return of her man. We then see that they have been together. But we also see that while sitting on the planets he get up and jumps over a couple of planets and IU has let go of his hand. He looks back and reaches out for her but she doesn't follow. He apparently has a wanderlust that hasn't been satisfied. They agree to meet again under the Strawberry Moon. We see him waiting and when IU finally shows up he looks like he was prepared for her not showing up. They hold hands and they story is done. Woukd love to see your take.
Their is also her song 8, which is about her struggle in dealing with the suicide deaths of 3 good friends. If you react to that I will post my take on it at that time.
Back to Shh. This certainly has some confusing elements that I am having difficulty putting in place. Your analysis was outstanding and you pointed out several things I had not noticed.
One thing that I have noticed, that you didn't mention was the use of color to define certain scenes in certain ways. Something that IU does often and so in Love Wins All using blue hue when the cube was present and warmer hues during the fantasy scenes. In this video there are scenes that have a dominant red hue. These scenes seem to me to be dream type scenes. At the start there is a mention of have a single memory of Her.
That single memory appears to be apart of 3 things we see with them both in the house. 1st is the picture of mother and daughter. In the picture it looks like IU is wearing the same dress we see in trapped in the trap door and the 3rd scene when mother and daughter are lying with eachother. That is also the only photo on the table that is in color. If you look at the MV again with the idea that the change of color might also represent a difference in reality (time or dream) as perceived by the daughter, I would be interested in knowing if that leads you to a different thought?
You need to do a follow up reaction to the IU MV from this come back especially where your understanding or insights have changed.
There is no one like her. In all she does, singing, song writing, composing, Producing, preparing and creating concerts, acting in movies and dramas, doing commercials, modeling and personal apperances for several international brands plus 10+ Korean brands.

Interesting thought on the mum burying herself. As parents, we tend to bury parts of our younger selves to take on the role of the parent. So, in a way, our children never gets to see our younger self clearly until they grow up and realize it for themselves

My 1st thought when I saw IU's dressing I thought of her as a woman of the street. It's just a representation of a broken relationship in whatever form between mother & daughter because visually it's the easiest way to portray it in an MV without saying out loud.

I'm really surprised how you came up with SHH. F and L. If you type F on your keyboard you will get (ㄹ) and if you type L you will get (l) and if you put them together you will get (리) Lee💜. Someone who entered concert halls with flowing clothes and flashing lights comes out wearing only comfortable clothes and simply being true to himself. Known to everyone and no one at the same time. Her name is Shh (이지은)

    My take:
The daughters of 4 generations end up as “working girls” and the mother and daughter in each generation is crying and shameful about the necessity. Each generation tries to hide the previous “shhh” but the pattern continues.
The sign name being the symbol of infinity.
IU saying she is going to face it is her breaking the cycle.

I have a vision of this song that I don't think anyone has yet... NewJeans' Hyein is exactly half IU's age and Joe WonSun is 20 years older than IU... almost the entire last year has been with NewJeans at the top of the charts applauded for its talent and youth, a lot for a recently created group while IU resurfaces on the music scene and WonSun has already been consolidated and today has almost no space... but what does this have to do with a song about mothers? Maybe don't talk about mothers, we know that IU's songs always have indirect messages and criticisms and this time she could be talking about how fickle the music market is, three generations where those who know one practically don't know the other two and so the industry consumers only replace people and they are just forgotten or completely unknown, and those who are lost, either because they were surpassed, lost their lives or simply no longer find space often don't even have their name considered or commented on as if it were prohibited. And I say this because at a recent awards ceremony IU seemed quite impacted by the performance of a singer with a beautiful voice in a wheelchair and many cried when they heard her sing. For me, it is a criticism of artistic discarding, whether due to age, the creation of a family or abandonment in the face of new developments in the fickle music market, remember the cube...

I think maybe it's all at once...
IU explained that the first verse is about a mother, the second one is about a friend and the third one is about a role model. In my opinion, the relationship with the mother settles the relationship with every women in life, but I can feel by the title that there's also a "social" component, the society vision/expectation about women. I hope it makes sense 😅

Very complex story line could go so many different directions. But something that has happened keeps looping back around and coming back up. Whether that is generational trauma or memories and details that are not spoken of....thus Shhh. Maybe the daughter is trying to figure it out without a lot of information. Not really sure. But the blusey song is great.

I noticed as IU was walking down the street an electric billboard scrolled the words 'CASH CANDY'. IU's playing a prostitute that the woman picked up presumably because she coincidentally resembled her dead mother. That's dark even for Korean cinema.
As to Mobius Strip, IU associates that with the number '8', which was the name of her song about missing her dead friend Sulli. I think the 'mother' is a red herring, the song is actually about IU's (L) feelings towards Sulli. Sulli and Shh both start with the letter S
