Nothing new. This is Vedic Mathematics, discovered in the Vedas by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha. Since then, a lot of people just copy and make others believe they are geniuses., taking care of not saying from where they got this knowledge and just calling it : tricks., which is dishonnest. Please read the Swami's book, "Vedic Mathematics". You will learn much more, and directly from the one who discovered them.

I think many math teachers in America are too lazy to teach such logic. I never encountered one from K-12. Hell, many may not even know this logic, if so why not teach them as mathematics would be fun rather than headaches for most people in America. There is a test out there with 50 questions as such, and the time limit is 5 minutes. Without this technique, it's nearly impossible.
