they had a retirement system and healthcare as well. they would take care of widows and if you lost a leg, arm, eye and so on, you would get money. If you were not able to sail anymore, you could retire. They did take care of their own, as long as you listened to the elected leader.
Of course, pirates were celebrities, but the the Merchantmen actually made the big money. They should do more movies on merchant ships....oh wait Merchantmen are BORING. And at least by 1686 Merchantmen could purchase insurance from Lloyds of London.
@@Tareltonlives yeah, that's true. Low risk, low reward. You'd be unlikely to be hanged for being a regular sailor, but pirates were hung if they were captured, save a lucky few.
Pirates: Democratic whenthe rest of the people in boats was paid next to nothing or had to hire guards to keep the crew from murdering them, and the first to use workers compesation. Alas like so many awesome things back then: it wasn't available for women. (Unless you were captured and brought abord...but that proably didn't end all that well...)
Well, depends really. Few were able to be openly women, but there is a long tradition of women dressing as men to be able to get where women traditionally wouldn't be able. E.g. Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
They would most likely have to be voted by the crew in order to survive. How could a self-proclaimed captain possibly rule a ship if most of his crew thinks he's incompetent and useless, or just don't like him? And what would stop the crew from throwing him overboard?
Who's the guy in the reddish curls and the fancy yellow shirt? Jim, Mat, Larry, and Lawry are already in this scene and he sure doesn't look like Ben or Simon.

ummm.... british do elect a prime minister, which is sorta like a president. the queen has no real power (not even the power to veto bills). that is why it is called a "Constitutional monarchy" (they have a constitution). Please don't call people "stupid" if you don't know what you are talking about. Though i do agree, brits have like the best tv ever, srly we get stuff like electric company and Aurthur, while they get dr who and hh! Not Fair!!!!
"Yeah, well I prefer the term "King" but I've got to make do with plain old lord, haven't I?"
XD
Jim does a spot on Lord Sugar impression! XD
Never going to be able to see the Apprentice again without thinking 'King Sugar'.
It's good to know that pirates believed in Democracy.
That's why Colin Woodard's book about them was called The Republic of Pirates!
And robbery.
Better at democracy than the 'beacon of freedom'

And before every voyage they had to sign a contract giving consent from every pirate and if you trust not the contract you leave with no punishment
'Well sometimes in business, you have to be a little bit ruthless' 😂
"They better be dead or I'm gonna kill'em" I love that part. i also like, "Sit down, ya late."
on the next comic relief, I'd like to see one of these Historical Apprentice Sketches with the real Lord Sugar.
This is so, so good. I don't think I've ever seen a better Apprentice spoof - Alan and Karren are spot on!
Is it me or is matt as a pirate adorable?
It's definitely Matt.
Love the way the pirates enter the boardroom 😄
See that’s where they went wrong. They should have bought 10% of 10 ships
GEKOLONISEERD
Of course, pirates were celebrities, but the the Merchantmen actually made the big money. They should do more movies on merchant ships....oh wait Merchantmen are BORING. And at least by 1686 Merchantmen could purchase insurance from Lloyds of London.
Mostly because unlike pirates the sailors didn't get paid much :)
@@Tareltonlives yeah, that's true. Low risk, low reward. You'd be unlikely to be hanged for being a regular sailor, but pirates were hung if they were captured, save a lucky few.
Nice to see Ollie Reeder making a name for himself
The fourth series has to be the best :'D
That's more Lord Sugar than Lord Sugar !!
chris addison, i like that guy - but he's not doing much here
Yeah that cameo was fairly random
He did another apprentice sketch with them, they were probably getting their moneys worth.
I wonder what the real Alan Sugar thinks of these sketches.
I doubt he watches a children’s show.
I do know that pirates are sensible, but these bunch are too sensible to be one!
I can’t believe even pirates believed in democracy
It was practicality. See CGP Grey's video on it.
That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen.

And iirc there were some female captains.
Is it just me or does Martha look at bit like Karen Gillian at the beginning? =S
Plot Twist: Business people are actually pirates, see Spongebob’s episode about Mr Krab’s dad
"SHAT IT!"
BEST. THING. EVER.
Sound effect at the beginning is quite good.

love it lol lol lol lol lol
should do more
OMFG It's Chris Addison
yea i thought i was the only one who thought that too.
was just about to reply with the same thing :P
Who's the guy in the reddish curls and the fancy yellow shirt? Jim, Mat, Larry, and Lawry are already in this scene and he sure doesn't look like Ben or Simon.
Thanks!
I don't remember Chris addison being in horrible histories
I think i know who you're on about, and i think he just looks like him, not sure if he is the same guy lol
is this series 3?
How very Putrid, but i like it.
Those facts are all true
We were the First democracy since Ancient Greece the demogracy the world uses now is our refined version of the Greek one.
roman republic would like a word with you
do the vikings just not exist now?
oh lol she does though.
Lol you are so smart. By the way, the first elected Parliament in England was in 1265. Sooo...that's...500 years before the United States existed.
Im pretty sure we're a democracy.
Old Woman: "... I thought we were an autonomous collective."

umm... they do have a democratic vote for a prime minister.
foam swords ._. but I don't think that Pirates ALWAYS voted for their captain, right? didn't some pirates just make hiself cap'n?
If they did, they risk being getting mutinied and marooned
1:04 is that foreshadowing?
King sugar confirmed
The pirates were gonna win anyway
-_- The Brits ARE democratic. The queen is just a symbol.

No real power?
That Donald Trump impression was terrible.
