I don't think chasing the threads in the banjo is a good idea. They were originally a slight interference fit to prevent leaks. If you do need to chase them, you should apply a drop of sealant to the bolts on final assembly.

Great tutorial. Thanks for posting. I'm having trouble with my rear end, maybe you can help? Out of the blue it stopped working. The drive shaft is turning, but the wheels aren't. The other cue: I pulled off the rear wheels and the driver's side cotter key broke. I'm thinking the ring gear my not be engaging the drive shaft gear.? Could that be it? Not sure if that can even happen

I don't see how you can tell that your d/shaft is turning. Assume that it is. jack up one wheel and start the engine, put it in third and let the clutch out. see if the axle turns. Be careful when you let the clutch up. If something inside has failed, the car might want to move forward. If it does turn, jack up both wheels and see if both will turn. Let's go from there. j

I have a quick question. If you don't have the torque tube on then you are not supporting the input driveshaft square to the case (banjo?). Even with the double bearing pinion, can the driveshaft drop causing the pinion to rise up in the case? This would cause a false deep indication on the ring. Please let me know what you think. Good tutorial on differential set up. Thanks, Rob M.

I don't think so. With the preload on the bearings, it is in there so tight, I don't think anything can move. We supported the shaft and there was very little bending load on the banjo.

thank you for answering my question. Your experience in model a repair is a lost art. Thank you for sharing.
