I have a Lodge Dutch oven and grill pan. I also have some very old cast iron pans from my grandfather. I have to say the old pans have very smooth cooking surfaces compared to Lodge products which are kind of rough. The quality of the old pans are markedly better.
I have this griddle and have been cooking on it for years. I am now renovating my kitchen and will buy a Wolf 48” range. Would you get the 8 burner top (and continue to use the cast iron griddle) or buy the 6 burner top with a cold rolled steel griddle? The griddle that comes with the range cannot be removed and is infrared heat.
Hello. Love the review video. How did you sand the surface down to a smooth surface? I would want to do the same. Did you use a belt sander or palm sander or grinder and what type of grit do you use? Thanks!!
Nice video.. I use a press alot, it helps get a good sear on meat. And when I toast a muffin, it will get a good toasts and then it kinda steam the rest of the muffin. Just be sure to get a heavy one. Mine is a 3 pounder. Plus it helps to cut down on grease spater. I even use it on the grill alot too...
My biggest problem with all stove top reversible griddle plates is under $100 is they are not perfectly flat. They usually tilt and move and do not sit rock solid on raised gas or electric elements. How is this one?
I picked one of these Lodge Pro-Grid Reversible Grill/Griddles (SKU: LPGI3) up for less than $10 at a thrift store several months ago. It was in good condition, but I stripped and re-seasoned it anyway. Have not used it yet! I’m thinking that the only indoor use I might have is cooking bacon in my oven. And that full length drain trough to the side will be make this grill/griddle far better than my two smaller “Double Play Reversible Grill / Griddles (Lodge SKU: LDP3) which do not have that feature. LoL! One of those two smaller pans was also a thrift store “find” - the other I’ve had over a decade. For exactly the reason Tom mentions in his cons, I cannot picture trying to use any of these grill/griddles in my small poorly ventilated kitchen. Aside from the bacon in the oven? I’ll be using the griddle side on my outside gas grill (or Sportsman charcoal hibachis)
Tom, I have this Lodge grill and I have not used it yet. However, I left some pots on it for several days, and it left stains from the pots that look like rust!!!! If it is rust, how can I remove it? Lodge Rust Remover? Steel wool? I am heartbroken that I screwed up this beautiful thing! Thank you!
It happens to all of us. The good news is, it’s likely just surface rust. Try a bit of bar keepers friend and a scotch brite pad. Lodge rust remover and steel wool may also be a good idea if it’s a bit deeper than the surface. After, make sure you season it to protect the exposed iron. Hope this helps.
It’s not too bad. Here’s a video on how I generally clean my cs cookware I Clean My Cast Iron Skillets With Soap ua-cam.com/video/G1mQxpUBwcs/v-deo.html
I want to buy Chinese Woks for electric stoves for Christmas, but I heard the carbon steel is best for stir frys, but... apparently, I can't use acidic foods in this. What's your opinion? I know you can season it inside o your BBQ.
My carbon steel has been fine. I wouldn’t worry too much about the seasoning. With wok, they repair themselves very quickly because of the high heat. Enjoy!
@tomwadek Oh, that's awesome! Thanks so much! Is there a particular brand that's better quality? I wish I had gas stove, but yesterday I heard no soy sauce - to use Maggi instead .
This video just popped up on my feed! You know I don't really need a big griddle. I have three round ones.but I wouldn't mind getting a rectangular one. But for me personally I would go with a smaller one from Lodge or Victoria. The one in your review is really really heavy! I was stunned how heavy that thing was. Picked up one a BassPro Shop. That's one heavy duty piece of cookware!
Actually Lodge doesn’t manufacture these griddles, they simply market them under their brand name .. These same reversible cast iron griddles are manufactures by factories in China and sold to different brands as requested.. I have the exact same griddle except mine is marketed and sold in North America by the Lagostina brand.. I’ve had mine for about 8 years now and it still works great 👌 The trick is to keep it seasoned , oiled and clean and you’ll never see rust 😊
I only use the smooth side. For me the biggest con is degreasing. In a skillet I just pour the grease into a jar. With the griddle I have to sop up the grease with paper towels.
no cast iron comes properly seasoned... have 2 lodge (plus many other cast) and getting this griddle. itall gets better with age. I dont like how rough the lodge is these days ... probably due to cheaper casting process perhaps? mine are both getting worn smooth(er)
I don't have a cast iron griddle, but I'm going to get one!!! If you would like to do it, can you do a video on "chef's pots," sauciers, everyday pans ---that kind of thing, the deep, rounded (wok-ish), bowl-ish fusion types of pots/pans which are versatile? The ones on Amazon are varied as to design and materials, but it's such a basic, useful pot/pan, that it seems like a good idea to narrow down the good choices. Just an idea to think about!!
I bought the one from Le Creuset. However, I had to return it because it was written in the instructions booklet that it doesn't suit ceramic glass stove top because it can scratch the surface obviously..also I was afraid to drop it on top of the oven because it is heavy.
I got a griddle for the smooth side to make smash burgers and Phillie cheesesteak sandwiches. Sorta like a poor man's hibachi. Before I cooked with it I sanded it. Not glass smooth, just knocked down the worse of the bumps.
Tom, you seem to be a stainless guy (which is fine) yet Cast Iron is not even similar to stainless. I only mentioned this because of your cons for Cast Iron is simply the way most Cast Iron is. So your personal chores with Cast Iron is routine for most Cast Iron owners. Still a good review yet you probably want to stick with Stainless Cookware lol
No I actually love the big 3, ci, cs, and ss. My favorite pan is actually carbon steel. I have moved away from cast iron a bit though because I feel my carbon steel pans take care of most situations. For anything acidic, I use ss. Thanks for watching.
I love your content in general and your videos, but it has to be said that the increased sound on music after the actual content is annoying. The sound levels are so different in this recording it hurts my ears. :/

outstanding review. Thank you for taking the time to make this and help with my purchase decision
My pleasure!
I love using this thing for cooking fish in the camper, best tasting fish i've ever had
It’s a very versatile griddle. I love it!
I just got mine and it is awesome. I use it on my sportsman pro .
Good video, gave me quite a bit to think about before deciding if I should get one. Thank you.
No problem. Glad you enjoyed the video

They really don’t make things like they use to. Hang on to that pan
I'm not really a fan of the grill side. If I'm cooking a steak, I'd use the flat side. I want as much contact and as much sear as possible.
Agreed. Turns into a smoke machine lol
I want one! I think the smaller size fits on camping 2 burner stoves
We use ours all the time. It’s held up really well
the shots of that chuck eye... that's they way!
Thanks

I used a palm sander gradually going finer until I was happy with the results.
Outstanding review as usual.
thank you, glad you enjoyed the video

I recently bought one. It definitely helps and so far I’m loving it. Thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Happy cooking
I couldn't understand what oi; you used to season the griddle with ?
At the time of this video, I think I used grapeseed or sunflower
How would you use this griddle?
Just bought this for my gas grill.. man, I can't wait to make pancakes, eggs, smash burgers, chicken and grilled veggies.
Nice, Hope you like it
Well done vid. I just bought one of these. Good info. Subbed.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the sub! Take care.
My biggest problem with all stove top reversible griddle plates is under $100 is they are not perfectly flat. They usually tilt and move and do not sit rock solid on raised gas or electric elements. How is this one?
Mine has stayed flat. It’s very heavy and I don’t have any issues with it moving around
Lodge made a carbon steel version will you be testing and comparing the 2?

@@freespiritwithnature4384 I’m doing a video on woks. I prefer Taylor and NG or Helen Chen. I have an old video about Helen Chen
Wonder if this would be good sitting on top of a fire pit to cook on.

Thank you! I will not buy Lodge now because they probably charge extra for brand
That's not true. They make everything in Tennessee except for their enamel coated dutch ovens. They are made in China.
I have the same griddle and only use the flat side, the only downside is it doesn’t fit in my oven for a full seasoning
I want to griddle on my Gas grill any thoughts?
You shouldn’t have any problems. I use mine to make smash burgers all the time
I only use the smooth side. For me the biggest con is degreasing. In a skillet I just pour the grease into a jar. With the griddle I have to sop up the grease with paper towels.
That’s an excellent point! Thank you for watching. Happy holidays!

@@tomwadek Thank you, but none of those videos cover the type of pan I described. No worries, it was just an idea. God bless!!
The victoria griddle is smoother, and better yet its on sale today for about 20 bucks.
I bought the one from Le Creuset. However, I had to return it because it was written in the instructions booklet that it doesn't suit ceramic glass stove top because it can scratch the surface obviously..also I was afraid to drop it on top of the oven because it is heavy.
I’m sorry to hear that.
Lord I love lodge!
They are a great company!
$35 Lucky I paid $45 CDN used its over $100 up north
I'm sure you have me beat at a couple of other items :) thanks for watching!
Can it be used on an electric stove top?
Yes it can
Thank you
You're welcome
I'm trying to picture what a big pan pizza would be like on one of these, might have to get myself an early Christmas gift...
Mcmurry hand forge…HAND made, carbon steel cookware if you are looking for a high quality, made in USA, griddle
Does this work on glass induction?
Yes it does but probably not as well since the drain causes it to raise so it won’t have fully contact
Got mine at Home Goods $25
That’s a great deal
A real "metal head".✌🏽
Haha, thanks!
Looks big enough to cook for 2 but over 3 I don't think so.
Do smash burgers stick on the grill side ?
If so - how about regular hamburgers ?
Yeah, they tend to get in between which makes them hard to flip. I would use the flat side for smash burgers
Regular burger do fine on either side
I got a griddle for the smooth side to make smash burgers and Phillie cheesesteak sandwiches. Sorta like a poor man's hibachi. Before I cooked with it I sanded it. Not glass smooth, just knocked down the worse of the bumps.
what kind of question is that??

Lodge does have a carbon steel griddle.
Yeah but it’s not reversible like this one

Great untill you put the crap cheese!!!
Never sand down your cast iron cookware. The more you season it, the smoother it will get.
That's really bad advice !!!!! 😡😡😡😡
