As a Taiwanese family we never leave the meal leavings on the table during Lunar New Year Eve until the next day. Perhaps it's a Chinese custom. Are you a pure vegetarian or a lacto vegetarian ? In Taiwan most vegetarians are pure vegans and they don't even eat garlic, onions and Asian chives because those are considered stimulating foods.

I am a lacto vegetarian but I am not averse to eating a little garlic or onions, but I often don’t eat them
