  • Neptune, the eighth and farthest known planet from the Sun in our solar system, is an ice giant with a deep blue hue caused by the presence of methane in its atmosphere which absorbs red light. Discovered in 1846, it was the first planet found by mathematical prediction rather than empirical observation, thanks to the calculations of Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams based on perturbations in Uranus's orbit. Neptune is about 17 times the mass of Earth and has strong winds, with some reaching speeds of 2,100 kilometers per hour (1,300 mph), making it one of the windiest places in the Solar System. It has 14 known moons, with Triton being the largest, and a faint system of rings composed of dust particles and small rocks. Orbiting the Sun once every 165 Earth years, Neptune's icy, rocky core is surrounded by a mantle of water, ammonia, and methane ices, which are in a supercritical state, and it's one of the coldest planets, with temperatures around -200 degrees Celsius (-328 degrees Fahrenheit) at the cloud tops.
