  • Today I'm comparing 3 Les Pauls at different price ranges. We're going to take a look at the Epiphone '59 Les Paul, Gibson Les Paul Studio, and Gibson Les Paul 50's Standard to find out if it's worth spending more money to move up the range. I'll go through what I like and dislike about each of them, and do some back-to-back playing samples.

    I own 3 Gibson Les Paul Standards, one of them being the 50s les paul. I also own the Epiphone inspired by gibson les paul standard 50s. I put a set of seymour duncan 59s into the epiphone & swapped the stock bridge & tailpiece for gotoh. It now easily stands up to the Gibson.

    I think they all sounded great. Great video. I have the Gibson Lp Standard 2021 in HCB and the Gibson Lp Studio in Smokehouse Burst 2020. The only unfortunate thing here in Australia is that the Standard is $5000 AUD which equivalent to approx $3500 USD. I love them both though and they both keep in tune. Set up on both was fantastic when I bough them.

    I got a 97 ebony with gold trim studio, ebony fretboard. I changed all the electrics including pups (496/500) pots (CTS 500K) Tonespro locking bridge, alum tailpiece, Tusc XL nut, Kluson locking tuners. The pots I took off were some small goofy looking junk with cheap plastic wrapped wire. To help these pups get the most we got Garrett cloth wrapped wire and. 011 caps, fully shielded inside. With cream plastics and 25 yrs wear and tear it just looks older than it is. I prefer older ,used , broke in guitars over new problems.

      yet the 59 epiphone is more vintage correct than the "standard" Personally dont think there's much of a difference in the sound, they are all les pauls in the end of the day.

    I have 4 of the epi 59s and they are all stellar examples. I had to play quite a few and had to pass on several to get the truly great examples.. for some reason I have found in every case that the cherry bursts are quality then the darkbursts . I know it's anecdotal and probably just a coincidence but all of the cherry bursts were better In every way . They all had much nicer tops and the aged look was more convincing . Even cherry burst I have played had better playability better fret work better action and the neck carves were more comfortable and refined. All of the dark bursts had blocky feeling necks and the taper felt awkward and cheap like they only focused on getting the thickness right and did not put effort into actually getting the profile and the taper Correct.. I found all the darkbursts to have slow to sticky feeling necks despite being staring. The cherry bursts had the same thickness but they felt thinner when moving up and sliding up the board . the taper and profile felt more refined and fleshed out. The taper and profile felt more like a gibson on the cherry bursts..

    Honestly, I don't see enough tonal differences to justify the 3 varied prices. I'm always a big fan of Epiphone as you get a nice quality guitar for a lot less money than the Gibson. That would be my pick if I was buying one.

    Nice video.
    Is it my imagination or is the Bridge closer to the bridge pickup on the Gibson. Does it effect playability? Or sound? Or both.

    • @kevinmurtagh4996
      @kevinmurtagh4996 Рік тому +1

      Theoretically, the further the pickup is from the bridge, the rounder and fatter the tone should be. I have a Gibson LP Jr. from 2006, and it looks to my eye like the pickup is slightly further from the bridge than on other Juniors. I’ve always wondered if this is the case, or if my eye is tricking me.

    Hi, I have always liked the 490R and 498T Pickups. I just to me personally, think they are the best sounding Pickups Gibson makes. I don’t like the Weight Relief Body’s. I think Gibson really screwed up doing that. The Guitar may be heavier with a Solid Body, but you get so much more Sustain and Bite. If I wanted a Semi Hollow Body Guitar, I would Buy a Semi Hollow Body Guitar! I can hear the difference in the Tone between the Two in my Tone. I’m glad I still Own a 79 Gibson Les Paul Custom. The Guitar Sounds better the more it Ages. Plus it’s a Solid Body. Great Review of the Guitars. The Epiphone really kept right there with the Gibson Standard.

    • @onemoreguitarchannel
      @onemoreguitarchannel  Рік тому

      You’re right, the weight relief could be a big factor in how it sounds. I had the 490/498 in an SG and felt they had more bite. I also tried them in a Tribute and remember liking them pretty well. Something about the studio does not ring like the standard does for sure.

    • @nh8781

      Hi. Both with 490/498 pick ups, can you describe more on the sound of the SG vs LP studio with weight relieve?
      SG usually sounds lighter/brighter than a normal LP.

    Everyone is trying to compare the Epiphone Les Paul Standard 1959 to a Gibson. But it would be also nice to compare it to an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (not 1959), to see if the Epi 1959 version is actually better.

    Interesting that the epi sounded the dullest despite the pups. I think its down to hardware and the pots. A better bridge and tail piece and 500 k pots would really make a difference. But for the price its better than an mim fender

    Higher quality wood simply means lighter wood
    . They use heavier more dense wood pieces for the lower priced guitars . This I why the lower prices guitars get weight relief . It did not start out for comfort or innovation like they claim . They were using very dense heavy wood which was tonal dead with no resonance. When you get into gibwom custom the guitars become also lighter on average. Many custom shop les Paul's are under 9 pounds. Many are 8.5.. it's always been a myth that the best 59 PPs were heavy guitars in the 10 to 11 pound range. Most boutique builders who produce vintage les paul clones use every light wood . Producing all their les Paul's 8.5 pounds and under . I have seen high end 59 clones in the 7 to 7.5 pound range with no weight relief. Many ginson USA standard 50s are in the 9.5 to 10 pound range and just a few years back les paul traditional and classic were in the 9.5 to 10.5 pound range and that was with weight relief. I have played chambered les Paul' studios that were 10 pounds when the newer ones are usually 7 to 7.5 pounds.
    I have seem Many people pass on so many les Paul's simply because they read the weight on the spec sheet and it listed at 9 pounds so they said it's too light at only 9 pounds so it won't have rhe sustain or the low end or resonance blah blah blah. They were convinced it had to be 10 pounds or over. I saw one situation where a guy who never owned a les paul decided he wanted one so he ordered one online and when he got it he decided to return it because it was too light for a les paul he said it only weighted 11 pounds and this made it feel cheap and like a toy . He wanted a les paul with the proper weight which he said was 14 pounds. He said he was having a hard time finding a 14 pound les paul.. even the heaviest les Paul from the mid to70s to early 80s rarely hit that weight I have heard of q couple of early 80s maple neck customs hitting the 13 to 14 pound range but even then it was not common .

    WHAT? you mean to say that your Epiphone came with a case !, last year I purchased a Epiphone Gold top (lefty of course) from Sweetwater and it didn't come with a case, you righties got it made. I was watching your video and I was thinking, "poor Kyle has to tell us what he doesn't like from each of his THREE Les Pauls" plus in the background hanging from the wall looks like your "T.V. Special too. Poor Kyle with all these Les Pauls to complain about😄. Seriously though, it was again a very good informative presentation. I liked the Standard the best as it sounded the best balanced where there isn't too much of anything drowning out the rest, second was the Epiphone because I like the mellow sounding tone of that guitar and third is the Studio which I didn't care for very much as it sounds kind of "tinny" to me. As always, I'll be waiting anxiously for your next video

When they are new I always worry I like them more because they are new. I have to reevaluate them when I shoot these follow ups. I learn a ton making the videos really. Thanks! I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do next lol. Been kicking around the idea of a P90 video but I’m not sure I’ve got enough for a good comparison.
