Universal Audio LA-610 Channel Strip Demonstration

- Unless you're primarily an engineer, you're probably not going to get easily excited on dropping over a grand on a channel strip, but there is good reason that studios have racks and racks of these processors. It's because they make things sound better. Owen O'Malley demonstrates on the versatile and musical Universal Audio LA-210.
In this video, Owen tests out bass guitar through the LA-210, and he's able to dial in a number of tones, from sweet to gritty, that easily get the tones he is looking for.

Usually on videos guys are playing so fast I really don't hear the difference. You really took your time and move very slowly and it actually helped me to hear the difference thank you
Exactly! This how a demonstration should be, no more no less! Bravo! Finally someone intelligent doing an intelligent demo. Thanks! from Janne
HD videos please... We can hear nothing on a 360p video. Thanks anyway!
@janedvinsson I agree. Perfect demo. Most people try to put on the "me show".
the bass guitar is plugged directly into the pre amp unit. However, there has to be a A/D converter in the signal chain to get it into digital format. Typically in most recording sessions (not all) the bass is ran directly. No micing of the amp cabinet. Saying that, I have mic'd a bass cabinet if i thought it had a sound that would add to the recording.
I'm getting one, especially for mics and vocals, but i am quite excited to hear it on the bass. i have grown tired of using line6 amp simulations ...
buy the 6176 ;) its better for bass with the 1176 in it ...
@@FALLENOUTOFTIME dude, it was 10 years ago ^^. i actually got the la610. which i haven't used much for various reasons... but based on what i've learned over 10 years, i don't think i've ever seen a 76 used on bass. they always seem to use a LA2A.
It goes from the UA into other gear then into the interface then the computer through a USB or Firewire or it goes direct into the interface or mixing board. the sound is made by the unit but it can not be recorded without a Ad/DA converter or interface
I loved this video. I own an AKG C414 XLII as well and was considering this unit as my next purchase so it was the perfect demonstration for me. Although our conditions are closest to being the same I appreciated how you thoroughly went through each setting where the differences could easily be heard. Awesome video which makes me want to get this piece even more. It would be really cool if you had a video using the AKG with a UA 6176 as I am considering this as an option as well! Well done!
Works well with any mic
buy the 6176 ;) its better for bass with the 1176 in it ...
Woah, i didn’t know the compressor could sustain the sound like that
Your description says, twice, that this is the LA-210! Needs a fix!
No I mean only through tour recording. these units are fr outboard gear to go from a instrument into a digital interface to capture Sound and mold it a bit before it hits your computer which houses you recording program. :)
This video really helped me to understand this unit. I bought one on the used market. Thanks!!
It's funny how these guys talk about everything like it's the greatest ever.
Interesting bass sounds dialed up in there.
Okay... but wrong usage Mr. Omelly. Yes, a world class channel strip but you need to set the T4 Meter to Comp, if you want to see the peak reducion :)
Does not look good. However, sounds world classy.
the la610 is GREAT on on bass
can someone explain this to me. is this system plugged directly into a computer or is there a power amp needed to generate the sound?
How do you tame the compressor attack spikes on this unit?
the 710 in the tube section has same tube sound as 610 or different?
by "other gear" you mean you plug your guitar into it? So can you hear the affected sound through an amp, or you can only hear it through your recording?
Have had this on my list of pre's - I can certainly see what people mean by a lack of headroom as much of what was played sounded quite muddy and blown out to me.
Great headroom
wow that sounds frickin fantastic
?? Did I miss something? Did he not play through it on bypass?...that would help a great deal in demonstrating it's sound.
I own one of these 610s. Do I need to Gain the signal with GAIN knob at t4 comp section to get a signal, even if i bypass the compressor? When I bypass the compressor, i still need the Gain knob on the t4 to be active to get a signal. Is it broken?
great demo, great sound. thx!
Where are the vocals he said he'd provide?!
*sigh*.. What I wouldn't give for an LA-610.. Great demo, thanks!
Whats the Mike?
this is a good preamp...gotta get it.
I never understood why a top notch company like UA would put something as cheesy as a 5 position switch on an input gain control. I'll stick with the 4-710d with all it's awesome options.
Can you put something with voice, nice video
ummm. MEGAohms, not MILLIohms. Big difference
This is the, "this guy", guy. Might as well have worn your yamica
1:45 ist *Mega* Ohms not *Milli* Ohms. You are off by a factor of 1,000,000,000 ...:D
This was the first mic pre I bought. Expensive. But you hear the quality. Don't record Fodera bass with it. The valve harmonics destroy the unique Fodera character.
I dont like the distortion. You pay such a price for clean sound...
i want one. too poor though : (
Yeah, oops.
Milli ohms? hahahahahah
These demos should be done by good players- on instruments that everyone knows...how about a good P-Bass!!! This demo doesn't really sell me on anything...
nice demo but please NEVER use that lead in music again!!!
