Guido Santorsola (born 18. November 1904 in Canosa di Puglia, Italy; died 24. September 1994 in Montevideo, Uruguay) was a South American composer and conductor. He spent most of his youth in Brazil where he studied the violin and composing. In later years he lived in Uruguay.
I have never heard anyone else play this piece. Strange... I have always loved it and in some ways it reminds me of A. M. Barrios... It is dedicated to Isaias Savio.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift of music. My father died this week and he was a classical guitar instructor ww11 hero pow. Your music has brought me much comfort and I know he would have loved your playong and would have commented that your technique ( keep your thumb under the fret board etc.) is perfect.

i was all rapt up listening to that performance and that piece. A teacher of mine and i used to play a Santorsola duo (for some reason I can't think of the name of the piece, but i believe it was a multi-part suite of some kind). It had the same effect. Really magical stuff. Great take you did here.

A very old recording of years Per Olov. Also a very beautiful and masterfully played piece. And rare too. I agree about the similarities to Barrios. This piece has peaks of grandeur and troughs of melancholy and despair. Bravo!
Thanks Rob. Yes, it's rare to hear this piece and I personally think it's sad. The rest of the suite is not as good and perhaps that makes it less accepted but guitarists...?
Master Isaias Savio dedicated his life to Classical guitar. He was the first teacher to introduce his method of teaching classical guitar in Brazil. He was born in Uruguay, and lived most of his life in Brazil. His noble students includes: Luiz Bonfa(Oscar winning "Manha de Carnaval"), A. Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Antonio "Toquinho" Pecci".
I think you totally have overcome the great obstacle for pianists, organists and guitar players: the narcissistic trap. Your playing is all about communication, and I have heard very few musicians so totally committed to sharing their insights and feelings to their audience in the way you do.

Because you play it with clarity and tranquil dignity, voicing and counterpoint are transparent. The chorale in the middle section is nice and slow. Really liked you interpretation of this piece.

I first heard this piece this morning when I was listening to a Kazuhito Yamashita album. It was fantastic and quite different to your interpretation. One day I hope to be able to play this too :-)

@@Per-Olovkindgren Thank you for such a beautiful rendition, exactly what I needed to listen to today! Carlos Barbosa-Lima plays that one piece often in his concerts. I used to play that piece myself as a dilettante, I always loved it so much.
I have that recording by Turibio Santos! I fell in love with this piece from that 'Magic of the Guitar' album when I was 15 years old. I'm now 42! I was a teenager the last time I attempted playing this piece, I'm going to try again tomorrow, it's stunning.

Hola Upatoia, yo estudié con Santórsola en su casa, "la escuela normal de música" en pocitos (no recuerdo la calle ahora) Armonía aplicada a la guitarra, y tengo su libro con dedicatoria. Mis examinadores para el profesorado fueron: Abel Carlevaro (que fue también maestro mío de guitarra) Eduardo Fernández que es de mi gueneración y pasó a ser un famoso guitarrista. Ahora toco poco y más o menos!! Quizás nos veamos algún dia. Recuerdo la suite no sé si tengo la partitura

A beautiful piece and a very rich interpretation - I like your playing very much! I used to play this piece years ago and it is inspiring to hear it again. Did you ever hear of Santosola's Suite No. 6 for mandolin and guitar?
One of his best known pieces but that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'd like to hear more of his guitar sonatas, but they are difficult to play of course. Maybe Eduardo Fernandez will record one some day.
