I was stationed at Wethersfield from 1988-1990 and was one of the last Americans to leave. I remember that time fondly as England is such a beautiful country and the English people treated us so well when I was there.
Thanks for this. When I was at Heyford 82-84, I was a big videotaper of UK stuff. It was a fantastic time for people like me who enjoyed popular culture differences. I just wish I still had all those tapes, dammit. I'd have never run out of video to digitize an upload, but fortunately others did too.
Christ how I personally wish the Americans were still here in this country. I have many friends that are near or in the towns where the bases are. We all agree the towns and villages have changed for the worst.
i live in wethersfield and the base is now owned by the Ministry of Defence. it's gone from a hub of activity being paid for by a foreign government bringing in money for our economy to being something paid for by tax payers money. on top of that, in the video they discuss the loss of jobs and business in the area. In my lifetime the village has gone from having 3 pubs and several shops to not even having a post office anymore. we have one pub and that is the only business still open for local people to use. on top of that there is no weekend bus service to Braintree (the nearest town) at all. Local council deemed it to be "Non essential" as a single dad who cant drive and has no shop in the village to even buy milk id say its pretty essential. It's a sad case of higher ups deciding what's best for an area they've probably never even been to.

My father was stationed at Wethersfield AFB along with his family, my mother, sisters and brother and myself from 1962 to 1964.
