    I'm Posting these to track my progress as a rider, not really for entertainment. I think it will be neat to look back in a year to see the improvements I've made over time. My goal is to get 50 hours of seat time this year and enter my first race. This is my second time on the bike with 1.5 hours of total seat time at the start of this video. I'm very aware that my skill level sucks and I'm open to suggestions on drills and ways to improve! You guys all ROOOCK and I hope you have a great week 🤘

      You need to watch IRC tire guy (Rich Larsen) channel on UA-cam. He's a hard enduro guy but has a very good 10 part progression series that's extremely helpful, even if your not into hard enduro. It helped me tremendously you'd be amazed how much it would help you.

      Best riding position is to be as close to the tank as possible and elbows up. And also it is better to ride with a group of more experienced riders. The reason I say this is you would naturally sink or swim. The more often you ride. The forearms get stronger. And your hand grip. Seat time is key. 🔑 You got this.

    best advice i have as a guy that went from quads to bikes is keep you weight on the pegs and squeeze the bike, do balance drills at slow speeds they really help build confidence, i recommend watching cross training enduro youtube it’s very helpful

  • @28wonton1
    @28wonton1 5 місяців тому +9

    Hey Mike. You hit the nail on the head! Get off the seat! That’s the biggest problem when moving between quads and dirtbikes. It’s going to feel unstable and awkward at first but it will start to feel more and more natural and then before you know it you’ll feel more stable when you’re standing. The only time you should sit is in a turn when it’s smooth. This will allow you to lean the bike over more. Also, don’t focus so hard on squeezing with your legs, simply stand on the balls of your feet and point your toes inward and you’ll realize that your knees will naturally squeeze the bike without you having to actually “squeeze” with your muscles and cause fatigue. And the absolute biggest piece of advice that I can give you when it comes to dirtbikes is STAY LOOSE! Don’t try to grip the bars or squeeze your legs so hard because every time the bike hits something and moves even the slightest bit, you’ll feel it and naturally try to correct. This will lead to more fatigue and at higher speeds can cause you to over correct and crash. It sounds crazy but a motorcycle naturally has a gyroscopic effect when it’s moving. The wheels spinning cause the bike to want to stay upright. If you have a loose grip you will naturally allow the bike to right itself without spending energy and potentially over correcting.

      Yes! This! The biggest boost I got when learning to ride better was when I became comfortable with being uncomfortable. Let the bike work and move under you, guide it but don’t fight it. It’s a hard skill to get the hang of but once you do, dirt bikes change from becoming a battle to an enjoyment

    One thing that helps you become a better dirtbike rider is riding with people that have a higher skill level than you, it will push you to be faster and more confident and following the lines that they take will teach you. Also watching the way they shift their weight and control their bike will help you

    Right on! As a dirt bike guy who has been following your channel for a while, this is awesome to see! You've got the right mindset. The best way to get better is to get set time. The things you really want to practice as a beginner, which I never did, is stand on the balls of your feet, point your toes slightly in and work on standing as much as possible with an attack stance - think let the bike push you instead of you holding on to the bike. Keep riding and you'll get better!

    • @tomatoknuckles
      @tomatoknuckles 5 місяців тому

      Definitely the best advice especially the keeping on the balls of your feet with your toes pointed towards the engine. In turn that'll bring your knees in to hold onto the bike more naturally. And try be loose up top aswell and let the bike do the work or you'll be drained super quick if you're tryna hold on. Sounds mad but it works.

    I really like long content riding videos. You are working on all the right techniques to get better. One thing to help with setup is to lower you clutch and front break so it's in a more comfortable position when you are standing.

  • @dwhitmire450
    @dwhitmire450 4 місяці тому

    Mike love the MS Extra channel and appreciate all of your content. Keep it interesting.
    I'm sure you'll get lots of valuable feedback and riding tips for riding dirt bikes and I'm sure they'll all be good but trying to do everything at once is hard it takes saddle time to get comfortable on a bike and learning the correct techniques.
    The one small piece of advice that I'll give you is keep your pointer fingers on the levers at all times, this will save you reaction time especially during a whiskey throttle as your weight goes back you can just pull the clutch lever and break the power to the wheel.
    Stay safe and keep up the great content.

Look up proper attack position to see what a nuetral weight position on the bike is, then look for the acceleration position, and brake position, remember if your gonna jump to know how to land before you go full send. I do not know how to ride a bike, really good car driver, but i rented i dirt bike at a track four times now. What i think is that going to a small track as a beginner it is much safer. You learn the track and what to expect from the bike to do and so you have time to actually think to do the tips you learn online or by other riders. As for content this is gold for a complete beginer what to expect. Maybe a bit more explanation of what your goal for the day is( like standing up more in this vid). Keep the vid coming man

    Just remember one thing bud when you're riding play it safe for a while just like how you just hit the hole out of nowhere. Hitting a hole could send you into a wobble then a whiskey throttle and is sending you into the trees. And for us track riders trees are cheese graters you go into the trees at speed you get grounded up. And if you're broken up it's a long long painful crawl out. And hope you make it out before you go into shock and eaten by the animals that are in the woods. Always ride with a buddy or two. So someone can go get help if you don't have a phone signal.

    Standing is definitely key on the trails, it is faster and more stable. It also uses less energy.
    You don't have to grip with the knees all the time. Often the bike needs to move around under you.. grip when accelerating on smoother ground. It gets easier the more you do it. Each time you go out it will be better.
    FYI Sand riding is also more likely to give you arm pump.. that loose front end feel triggers you to death grip, even when you are trying not to. Keep at it, you're doing great!

If you feel you need more there are schools but depends what you want :) Looks sandy where you ride, keep your ass back and power on as much you can to keep front light. May need to relax a bit and that might help your arm pump, sounds like from what you say you are trying to fight it all the way. Depends on terrain but just go with the flow. Try backing off rebound clickers on the forks might help. 2 clicks not much see if it helps. Worked for me in the past.

    Glad yo see you trying to get better! The best way that i got to be a pretty decent rider, i basically anylized how i rode, then the next time i would make tweeks to how i rode, i also learned to stand up, and learned to ride standing up. But when your riding, your blipping the throttle alot, could be that your not using a thumb throttle, but the best way to at least be controlled is to maintain smooth throttle actuation along with the clutch. I suggest as you get a little more comfortable on the bike that you should start trying to shift your weight forward and back, lifting you leg in turns, and moving your body with your bike. You can even practice this on the stand, just sit it up there, then get on and just practice shifting your weight to the front, leaning back, it really helps. Good luck in your journey to riding a dirtbike! Ill just sit here and watch! 💪

    @rocknraptor3195 4 місяці тому

    Maybe with the arm pump you start with a death grip, which is a BiG No nO. Even though you're obviously strong you're using a lot of muscles & with time your riding style will progress as well as all the different muscles you probably only use in a certain way while riding. Hope that makes sense.
    On a street bike death grip is, well a good way to meet death. I'm sure you have heard of "death wobble" or "high speed wobble", in a lot of cases it's entirely due to death grip & torquing the handle bars. LIGHTLY holding the bars & using the rest of your body is the correct way.
    Weight distribution is key for being a great rider, as well as any driving, but with bikes it's up to your body to do that.
    If you watch some professional riders you will see how much they move around, using the whole seat. And counter leaning! Opposite of a street bike!

    Just keep getting back up buddy ✊🏾✊🏾 long time watcher would love to come rip down there, it’s been a few years since I’ve been down your neck of the woods. I’m right outside of limerick power plants so all we have is river wood trails with brown dirt and silt basin. They’re still fun as all hell but nothing like down yonder … like you said earlier in the vlog control with legs as much as possible. Loading hips instead of breakin at the knee to much. Head/chest up and forward to the bars, ride on the balls of your feet to allow your ankles to stretch and be one with the suspension . Ima 2 stroke rider rm250, so I’m always riding a gear or two taller for more stable chassis, but even in 4strokes I do the same when I get to ride em. Just keep that momentum and don’t rely on clutching to save you. Think of controlling the bike with your knees leaning for turns instead of turning bars . Oh yeaaah if you push all your controls inwards towards the center of your bars, this does help with arm pump a bit, as well as having a diamond shaped grip like diamond push-ups instead of gripping your bars like a barbell . Elbows up to the sky instead of down behind you or believe you. You’ve lifted before so I think you know about bracing your core. Once you stop bracing you’ll notice how unstable your torso becomes which then makes the head shake of the bike 💪🏾💪🏾🙏🏽 oh yeaaah learn about your clickers in your forks and rear spring, your bike is probably very lose from facotry, a few clicks towards the positive mark with stiffen them up. As you know with anything few changes not a lot all at once . Try the front first and see what’s up, after a month or so of that after riding her soft, then you can assess and decide to touch your rear shock. Or send em out to get set up for ya and your weight/skill set

    Hey Mike glad to see you putting in the time on 2 wheels. Is this a 'legal' place to ride in PA or just a secret spot?

    Hey, AJ Catanzaro has a school called “Moto Academy”. I have a couple friends that signed up and it’s pretty cool. He has training videos to teach you to get better and you can submit videos of you riding and he will personally critique your riding and give you tips and advice to get better. He also does in person lessons all over the country for members. My friend went from zero experience to being an A class rider in 3 or 4 years, so I’m guessing it’s an effective course.

    That red light meat is your launch control you probably have three different maps programed on your bike. It's for different riding styles. Good, gooder, goodest. Read your manual and hope you comprehend it or call your dealer and talk to someone who rides alot and knows in detail how to explain the settings to you.

    I see plenty of comments about body position and tips like that but something id suggests is getting some full wrap around hand gaurds instead of the flag style. When i first started woods racing, i couldnt tell you how many times having the full wrap arounds saved my fingers. Trees always find a way to jump out in front of you

    Great video, You should always cover the clutch lever and front brake with one or two fingers in case of some whiskey throttle or something goes wrong, and practice your balance standing up on the bike, and have you set the sag on your dirt bike? 🤘🏼

    Watch videos a lot of pro riders have them. dont hold the bars with a death grip also do figure 8s they help with turning.

  • @bartnelson2397
    @bartnelson2397 4 місяці тому

    Start doing figure 8 drills. You need to learn to ride slow before you can really rip. Also start cutting in some single track seems there is plenty of space
    My 2 cents

    Get a small motorcycle like a cbr300 or a drz400sm and you can practice on the road to get some more time on 2 wheels.

      Not a bad idea! I did used to ride a CBR back in the day but I felt the skill did not transfer (I was never much good on it anyways), but I bet the DRZ or super moto would help!

    I now it sounds funny...but while standing...stick your butt out. Your trying to make your shins straight up and down above your pegs. The ball of your foot on the pegs...almost like your on your toes but on the ball of your feet. Butt out...head forward...over the bar pad. Sqeezing your knees in. You should gain a lot of control this way. Torso straight...butt out. I know I know sounds funny butt it works.

    I think people telling you to put paper plates between your legs in the side of the bike are completely full of crap you have to ride the bike not cling to it every second that you're on it you have to ride the bike you have to be all over that thing you can't just sit down with your legs squeezing the side of the bike the whole time that is outrageous I don't see anybody sitting down through a hole in Durham race with their legs squeezing that bike the whole entire time that is just absurd if that's what professionals are doing nowadays boy I could really teach them some tips and tricks

    Best way to get better is putting in the hours. Get the basics nailed and get body position dialed in. Start practicing covering your brake/clutch with your index finger, it will pay off big when the speed comes by cutting down reaction time and avoiding stalls in techy stuff.
