- In this episode, I ride from Dondo to the Kalandula Falls - but on the way, I follow an incredible dirt track through rural Angola, I cross the mighty Kwanza river again, and ride past a stunning rock formation which origins still remain a geological mystery until today.. what a day!!

After being constantly bombarded with everything that is wrong (and all that will go wrong) in the world, itchy Boots videos twice a week are such a welcome and needed celebration of all that is good. I was a Captain in the Canadian Army and served 14 months in Angola. I lived with Savimbi’s Unita/FALA in grass huts at many locations & with the MPLA/FAPLA trying to bring an end to the conflict and I was even in Cabinda where there was another group called FLEC that wanted separation (oil $$).
It was an amazing experience, yet dangerous at the same time. The war lasted over 20+ years. The country was destroyed, blown up vehicles strewn all over, no electricity, unmarked land mines everywhere and Cuban troops withdrawing. What a mess.
We had no chicken, beef or fish to eat for the first 6 months. The people, despite their conditions, were wonderful & generous, although they had nothing.
The number of amputees numbered in the thousands. A place of death and suffering then.
I am so happy to see the country has recovered a great deal and for the kind people of Angola. This video brought back memories, most of the bridges were destroyed then, so nice to see them reconstructed and the beautiful scenery.
I survived my tour years ago and think often of the Angolan people I knew who passed and those that survived.

I grew up in Namibia, just next door to Angola, and have never heard of the Calandula Falls. The falls that get all the attention and tourism are the Livingstone Falls in Zimbabwe/Zambia.

Re-watching multiple times because of so many incredible scenes. The drone imagery starting at 8:22 zooming away while Noraly rides across the "bridge over river Kawanza", then rising up to see the river slow and widen takes breath away. Perhaps my favorite scene. Hey Jason, don’t know what is going on, I have replied twice to your comment regarding the film crew that Noraly responded to, and for some reason it will not post. So I am now trying to reply to another one of your posts and see if it goes. So yes I did read those comments and I am glad she replied. Watching you from India, we have rivers, lots of them but rivers in Africa is no joke. Its end to end without sand and just dangerous flow. The water is brackish, pure and teeming with life. If Africa wants, it can be the effing epicenter of food world with those rivers and empty spaces to produce food.

Really undeveloped country. Amongst the previous countries this is the best till now! A lot of possibilities to feed humanity in the future , so we don't have to worry about that! That video of the bridge over the Kwanza and the might of the water bashing to the pillars it was relying on

It's also fun to see you enjoying firmer terrain and, after weeks? months? in the West African mud, basically being able to whip through the rutted/water channeled - but drier - roads in Angola.
My father, a Navy Officer, before the Independence of Angola, was studying the rivers at South. We were located at Lubango (before Sá da Bandeira). He literally went to places where nobody had gone before. In Portuguese, they were called "terras do fim do mundo". Lubango and surroundings are beautiful. Anyway, in a big country, as Angola is, you find a lot of gorgeous places. Good luck.

@yes, but none of the roads, bridges, cities/towns, national parks, the few farms, etc, were built by the actual black Africans. There is ZERO stuff in Angola built by black Africans except the flimthy + smelly shanty-towns, etc. All the things worthy of mention were built either by European colonisers (by the Portuguese in the case of Angola) & the recent ones were built by the intrepid/industrious/hard-working Chinese. The 'gods' had built the African nature (forests, rivers, animals, etc) OK? We Africans are very disappointing. Bye.

Lush turns out to be an understatement in this area of Angola. A thousand shades of green, at least! The falls are epic and so are the rock outcroppings.

I have to say I'm pretty close to the Niagara Falls in upstate New York near the Canadian border and have been there but those waterfalls in Angola look absolutely breath-taking and unbelievable, really! I worked in travel for 15 years but know little about West Africa so am loving learning about the different climates, terrain, languages and people. Thanks for sharing!
