- This is Our First Time Watching Reaction to the movie The Suicide Squad (2021). The most dangerous supervillains in the world, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn, and others, are sent by the government to the isolated, hostile island of Corto Maltese. Only Col. Rick Flag is on the ground to control them as they walk through the treacherous jungle carrying cutting-edge weapons on a search-and-destroy operation.

People usually forget that Harley is an Olympic level gymnast.
Her upper and lower body strength is insane.
Even more amazing: Margot Robbie actually did that stunt where she starts contorting her body to escape the handcuffs.

Rick Flag's final words 'Peacemaker, what a joke.' are actually a pretty cool nod to Watchmen. Because The Comedian in Watchmen was originally supposed to be Peacemaker, but they couldn't get the rights to the character to use him there, so he was changed to be The Comedian instead.
Actually, it's not about rights - Warner has the rights to Peacemaker, and back when the original Watchmen comics were in the planning stage DC already had the rights to the character. The reason they never used him for Watchmen is because DC had just bought the rights to a bunch of old characters (The Question, Peacemaker, several others) and wanted to use them as _regular_ DC characters, so Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons had to make new characters based on the characters they'd wanted to use. Comedian = Peacemaker, Blue Beetle = Nite Owl, Captain Atom = Dr Manhattan, etcetera.
Side note: All the returning Squad members (Rick Flagg, Harley, and Boomerang) were on the distraction team. Waller really tried to erase all evidence of the first movie.

Starro the conqueror might be one of the most tragic villain in any superhero movies. He was by himself not getting into any trouble floating in outer space until he was captured by human. We humans, are the actual villain in The Suicide Squad
The suicide squad has always been a criticism of the American military and government, something this one nails right on the head
The issue DC has is they wanted the success of Marvel movies but didn't have the patience (or skill) to build a true cinematic universe like they did. It's an issue that they still don't seem to have solved but they're kinda learning. Love this movie, btw, it goes to show how well something can turn out when you give a director and writer the freedom they need creatively!
Yes and no. You're not wrong by any means, but part of the process is also listening to the powers that be. Star Wars was an unmitigated disaster until Alan Ladd Jr (who was on Fox's board of directors) stepped in and gave Lucas an ultimatum. They wanted to kill it before Ladd stepped in. Clerks, Psycho, Toy Story, the list goes on. Sometimes filmmakers and writers gotta be reeled in and it's for the best.
Well way i see it Marvel being smarter based a lot of their characters in same city, namely New York a real city and so you at times see while reading a story about spiderman that something happened in Hell's Kitchen and you got some info about something happening with Daredevil who fought Kingpin as often Spiderman did then you got the fantastic four on Baxter building,you got the falcon, sandman...etc while in DC feels less tied together cause every hero they got has his own fictional city and surely makes big difference something happening in metropolis from something in gotham....etc

I feel like now that they don't have to compete with the MCU and that they now have James Gunn at the helm, they can actually grow into a superior cinematic universe.

Apparently Ratcatcher's actress would take regular naps on set and sleep super deeply which is why they made her character so sleepy.
There's videos of the other actors having a dance party around her while she's napping and she doesn't react.

Indris Elba(Bloodsport), Michael Rooker(Savant), Taika Waititi(Ratcatcher), David Dastmalchian(Polka-dot man), Sean Gunn(Weasel/Calendar man) & Sylvester Stallone(King shark) all are in the MCU. Also Pom Klementieff (Mantis) was the main dancer on stage at the bar.
Starro was the first villain the Justice League faced in the Brave and the Bold comics. He was also in various DC animated series as an Easteregg in the 90s Superman animated series only to become a story plot later in Batman Beyond. He was alone in the Batman: the Brave and the Bold animated series, and in the Young Justice series.
There's a video where James Gunn has explained basically the 1st phase of the new DCEU & it sounded really exciting! 😃🙂 Also, every episode of Peacemaker has a POST CREDIT SCENE at the end! 🙂
Team 1 was the group that Amanda didn't really like, who irritated her so she used them as the first team to take the fire.
I thought she sent two teams because it increased the likelihood of them completing their mission. Team 1 was taking fire because Pete Davidson sold them out. Why would Waller sacrifice the team Rick Flag was on, her most reliable person leading the mission.
@@timgreenwald1043 This was actually touched upon in a deleted scene and Gunn in an interview. Flag makes fun of a shirt Waller is wearing which gets a huge laugh from Economos. Gunn specifically said in an interview this is why he was put on that beach, for "humiliating" Waller in front of her subordinates.

@@anon8079 if Mia Goth played Harley Quinn no one would ever talk about Margot Robbie’s Harley… kind of like no one talks about Leto’s Joker. Even though I know that will not happen there is definitely a better Harley Quinn out there and I hope we get her someday.
I believe what made this movie work where the "Snyder era" movies failed despite this one having every bit the darker tone was that Suicide Squad wasn't afraid to lean into the sillier out there aspects of living in a world inhabited by super-powered people who wear spandex, aliens and demi gods etc. It also gave the characters something that should have been present in the well known characters used in the Snyder era like Batman and Superman (who were the same dude by the time BvS came out character wise) especially, heart, movie has a lot of heart and made you feel for these villains essentially. Back then I was all in on a more darker, adult comic cinematic universe that wasn't all PG rated family friendly fluff, this movie was definitely a great step in that direction, we can have the gore and violence but give us some characters to get invested in too. I remember when Superman died at the end of BvS and felt nothing, and this is coming from someone who remembers how big the Death of Superman was back in the 90's

And apparently the Matrix 4 did better on HBO plus than the Snyder Cut, so I understand why WB is course correcting, especially if they want to be a more profitable alternative to Disney/Marvel
The Detachable Kid was played by Nathan Fillion!🤯Peacemaker seems very unlikeable, and not a likely choice to revolve a TV series around. However, It was a very good series. Peacemaker inspired the character of The Comedian in Watchmen. He's the embodiment of the American Dream. Definitely need King Shark in Aquaman 2. The rats outnumber humans in every city on the planet

Actually, DC has an _actual_ embodiment of the American Dream - he's called Uncle Sam and looks exactly like the old recruitment posters. Peacemaker is basically an earlier variant of the ruthless vigilante-type, created by Steve Ditko, who had some...interesting...political views.

DC has always been great about superheroes, both in comics and movies. Of course, in movies they have had their ups and downs. but I consider this movie a great movie
King shark's finger mustache disguise is still one of the funniest things in the movie. This movie was definitely in DC lane. They've always been darker then add some humor.. Perfect balance. Bloodsport in his battle helmet and casual fit hanging from the building is hilarious 😂

The first Suicide Squad film did have a good soundtrack. It had bohemian rhapsody, House of the Rising Sun, You Don't Own Me, and Super Freak.
Kaycee called them "expendable". The irony is Stallone was the leader of the expendables.

8:42, it’s funny you mention that, but also sad that you’re more than likely right. There’s so many great dark and gritty stories to pull from marvel that I just don’t feel they’d adapt even to their fullest potential. Like Immortal Hulk or Punisher Max for example.

You guys have to watch the Peacemaker. Honestly one of the best and funniest shows I've ever seen. John Cena and crew are fucking awesome.
This is one of the best DC movies ever if not the best. I’m very much hoping y’all will react to Peacemaker soon after this. It’s hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt. Also one of my favorite shows of 2022.
1) several of the DC movies were much improved in the "extended" blu-ray/DVD versions, with between 20min and 2 hours of additional footage added to flesh out the story. In particular "Batman v. Superman", "Suicide Squad", and "Zack Snyder's Justice League". ZSJL in particular cut 1 hour of Joss Whedon reshot footage (JW rewrote and changed the story when he replaced ZS) and added 2 hours of ZS footage to restore a 4-hour movie with a completely different plot. Includes 2 end credit scenes (1 dark, and the other very dark) tying into future films.
2) where DC really shines is in their TV series set in the "Arrowverse": "Arrow, "The Flash", etc. Start with "Arrow" season 1. Barry Allen appears in a 2-episode story in S2, leading the the 1st season of "The Flash" running concurrent with Arrow S3. Add 1 new series each season thereafter: "Legends of Tomorrow", then "Supergirl". "Constantine" only lasted 1 half-season, but the main character (and actor) switched over to the Arrowverse, first as a recurring guest role on "Arrow", then as a regular on "Legends of Tomorrow". One nice feature is that they bring actors from previous DC TV shows and movies back in similar shows: the actor who played Barry Allen in the 1-season 1990 series "The Flash" plays Barry's father Henry Allen in the Arrowverse "Flash", and eventually Flash's from variant alternate universes. The actress who played supergirl in the 1990's movie plays Kara Danvers' adoptive mother, and Dean Cain from the 1990's "Lois and Clark" TV series plays her adoptive father in the "Supergirl" series. "Batwoman" and "Black Lightning" can be ignored except as they appear in annual cross-over events. All of the Arrowverse shows are on Netflix.
3) "Swamp Thing" is a 1 "season" stand alone mini-series. "Stargirl" is in a stand-alone universe, so far with 3 13-ep half-seasons. Both pretty good.

The only marvel that was dark was Infinity war. That’s probably the farthest they’d go. That’s the first time any of us have seen the avengers be torn apart like that

Hell yeah Peacemaker is my current favorite show from either marvel or dc, love seeing him start out in suicide squad.

Well, Dwayne Johnson completely and selfishly bullied DC into bringing Cavill back. He just wanted to insert himself as Black Adam into a new Superman movie. He didn't even care about Cavill. It was all about him. So, blame Dwayne for all of that.

This was the movie that restored my hope in DC and with Gunn now at the head I couldn’t be more excited.
So the story goes, the scene where Harley Quinn escapes, they were supposed to do some clever editing or practical effect to make it look like she picked up the key with her toes and unlocked the handcuffs, but then Margot Robbie just did it for real on the first try and they were super relieved to check that the camera was rolling...
Backpack rack kinda makes sense and it doesn't at the same time.

Did you react to James Gunn’s video for DC? Marvel introduced characters and objects that are vital parts for Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars in Phase 4, just the projects were all over the place in quality. Phase 5 is going to kick Marvel into high gear with Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania
Overall mcu quality has gone up IN PHASE 4 .Anybody remember ironfist and inhumans for example?I guess some folks here do not.

I think one of the big issues people may be facing is that the first phases focused on characters that people have already known for entire generations (Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc.) and when they finally debuted on screen people were happy to see them represented and integrated in such a way that blew the film industry away. Unfortunately real actors aren't ageless/immortalized like they can be in comics. All you do is reboot them with a new artist.. The MCU has the difficult challenge of bringing in all these lesser known newer* heroes and bringing them together in a similar way but since they are more unknown (Eternals, ShangChi, Kamala, etc.) it's harder to sell them and do them rral justice without a long slow buildup. And people just can't wait for that since they haven't been tried and tested over time like the core Avengers (or XMen) have. So as you mentioned, people really should be more patient and let Marvel work its magic. Have faith in the process. It's all going to come together so have fun on the journey.

I believe that seeing all the heroes become the heroes they are meant to become before they go and save the world in a huge team up like Infinity War or Endgame. There needs to be a build ul before a massive project in order for it to actually work properly. Rushing into things only makes it messy and confusing.

By the way kevin feige never admited the story telling in phase 4 is the weakest or less creative etc..but he admits it's less connected then phase 3 for example and most of the audience wants to go back to be being more connected,so that's the mess certain folks are talking about and few other things.

Phase IV was an experimental phase for the MCU. This experimental phase was needed in order to grow the brand. If you look at it that way you'd realize that phase four was much more successful than people give it credit for. People are saying with the Ant-Man trailer phase 5 looks like a return to form. It only looks like a return to form because phase four was the experimental phase and now they've returned to The old Marvel way of doing things. Phase 4 was a great phase. I believe folks Will eventually look back on phase four years later and see it was a pivotal time in the MCU and it was needed to push the MCU brand into different directions.

I'm certainly all for volume the more the better as far as I'm concerned as long as it stays true to what the MCU is as a whole. I disagree with John in that the connectivity is what makes the MCU special and can really enhance the experience. People were calling superhero fatigue after the first Avengers. The movies have always been criticized for vfx, especially the Hulk movies, and abundant use of cgi in general. The writing and plot holes were always coming under fire even in their biggest hits, how did all that time travel stuff with Cap work in Endgame?
The MCU is incredible but it has always been flawed. If people are only starting to see the cracks now then maybe they are consuming too much and the answer isn’t for Marvel to slow down and stop expanding. The answer is to just take a break and only engage with the parts of the MCU that interest you.

Starro is more of a Justice League villain, even more so with Superman. But the original Suicide Squad debut in the comics around the same time Starro was created.
Ratcatcher II is my favourite new character from this movie.

There's a lot of people who blame the Starro thing on Waller and the US, and sure, they made things worse, but...Starro was already going to do what he did. They didn't make him evil, he already had the mind-control facehuggers as a thing he does. He belongs to a species that just drift through the void and take over worlds, and are considered among the worst threats in the universe. One of the few cases where Green Lanterns are allowed to go full lethal with their rings.
Fun fact. When you referenced the Dawn of ye Dead remake, James Gunn actually wrote it.
