      I have cats myself and they are great companions. Unfortunately they also have the instinct to catch birds, even if humans give them enough food to eat instead, and Svalbard has a big population of rare birds who come there to breed in Summer. I recall reading that when cats were introduced to the mid-Atlantic island of Ascension, they decimated the bird population there. It's not because of rabies, dogs get rabies as well but they are not banned on Svalbard.

      No, there is actually not such ban at all, the point is, all people on Spitzbergen have their roots on mainland anyway so they prefer to be buried there. Also, when people retire, most of them return to mainland before they die or if they fall seriously ill, they are submitted to hospital on mainland for treatment and pass away there. Is the same with this birth ban myth, there are simply no facilities on Spitzbergen, so birth is given on mainland.

    Weird rules from the Soviet Union in that there was a guard sitting in the hotel corridor and looking after the whole night.
    And the 50th anniversary of the victory over the Nazis was celebrated grandly at the consulate in Barentsburg. We all had to pass through the consulate security locks with fire shards against attack. Certainly standard for all consulates worldwide, even in peaceful Barentsburg

    "... it’s the only inhabited place you can experience northern lights during the day because it’s in complete darkness during the winter months until mid-February. …". Hm. First, what does it mean "during day" when you have the polar night? Second, northern nights at noon happen in any town to the north of 70 latitude (and there are a few, even in Norway). Of course, due to Golf Stream, western Svalbard is perhaps the northernmost location that is not a polar desert, and it is in many ways unique.

      Is it punishable by death? LOL. It seems like a dumb law, but there is no welfare system on Svalbard, and medical care is pretty basic. If you can't pay your way, you are given a plane ticket back to where you came from. People with serious health issues would probably go back to the mainland or their country of origin for treatment. So from what I've seen, it's a mainly young population there. Crime is low so I don't know if there have been any homicides. In terms of accidental deaths (or being killed by polar bears), I would be interested to see the statistics on that, and what they do with the bodies of the deceased. Bit of a morbid subject, but interesting.

    • @MedusasFeelinSalty
      @MedusasFeelinSalty 11 місяців тому

      They ship the bodies to the mainland to be buried or cremated. The cemetery on Svalbard has only ashes buried due to polar bears. The bodies also don't decompose due to the permafrost. If a person is very ill, they get sent to the mainland. You have to be able to completely be able to take care of yourself to live on the island.

    Cats are banned on Svalbard as I've discovered via Cecilia Blomdahl's YT videos. Considering the environment and predators such as polar bears who are native to the island...I wouldn't let my cats go outside anyway. I don't now here in USA. Even if they were allowed outside on Svalbard, the thought of them getting out and lost in that at-times harsh environment scares me. The thought scares me here in USA. So as beautiful, majestic and pristine the natural wonders of Svalbard are...I wouldn't be able to live in that wonderful place.

      I mean the same could happen to dogs. I’m only speculating that the reason is because of the animosity between cats and dogs and the island needs their dogs to “work” for them. It’s cruel and unsafe for dogs as well with polar bears running around but I guess like with most things exception are great to make if one gets to benefit from one animal versus another. I could be wrong but do dogs carry rabies as well?!?
