Finally some AW11 content! Would of been nice to see the W30 as well but this is nice for now.
Maybe we can see a cross 4AGE comparison of FX16, AE86 and AW11 next, to explore 4AGE impact on the market in the 80s.

Thats what I thinking. No spyder? They’re not so aesthetic from the factory, but It’s the best performing one of all, Including the AE86. I don’t get the W30 hate. Nice review of the early gen’s anyway. I feel like the car community nowadays focuses too much on aesthetics rather than performance.

Glad to see the SW20 get some love, it’s very underrated in my opinion. The SW20 can compete with cars that are far more expensive! I currently have a gen 5 3sgte from a Toyota Caldina in my SW20 and I love it, it’s the perfect balance of power and handling. It makes 260whp with 251wtq. It’s so much fun I’ll never let it go!

      @jinxtacy 2 роки тому +3

I think it's probably rated pretty accurately. All the cars that people want to compare them against have better suspensions or better aftermarket support. It's like a 240 without the community to support and develop it, though it does have its own great community. But these cars just have a less sophisticated suspension setup then the Supra, RX7 and Z. I'll even the Hondas of the 90s have a more interesting suspension but there's only so much room to try and generate a suspension that will have the camber curves. I think Hondas super creative in how they approachee their issues and would be fascinated if they had designed something for the MR2 but you'd probably run into issues in vertical space. They're obnoxious to buy wheels and tires for nowadays though. I got rid of my FD and got back into my second MR2 and it is so much cheaper in running costs. Certain aspects of the handling make me sad since I consider the FD to have one of the best suspensions at that weight but the MR2 is my everyday everything car though it is slightly terrifying in snow and ice. I bought it for it's simplicity and the fact that it's a Toyota and the interior is leagues better at holding up compared to Mazda. I always said I'd never get another MR2 since it was so difficult to work on but then when I was working on my Volvo swapping the engine it was exactly the same aside from some top access reaching. Good solid mid-tier car that's easy to live with and not as sexy as some of the bigger more expensive cars of the time. It's kind of a shame that they've become collectible now. I feel like collectors kind of ruin the fun of communities.

I'd love to hear more about the touge scene from back in the day. The conversation about AE86 drivers vs AW11 drivers was pretty interesting!
I own an AW11 myself, but I don't find it as dangerous as mr. Tsuchiya said. He's probably driven it at insane speeds though :) .

I used to own a USDM SW21 with the 5S-FE and S54 5 speed manual. A classmate of mine in high school had a late model AW11. Both our cars were black. Mine was a 1991 Rev 1 with power steering. Standard suspension with the stock 14 inch wheels. For all the jokes about snap oversteer I never felt the car was scary to drive. It was very communicative. The balance was awesome. Very fun on a winding road. Was my daily driver for 3 years. I miss it.

I was and still consider myself as an Italian car enthusiast. But I still have and remember reading in a Greek car magazine a travel test featuring two MR2s and a comparison to an FX16. I was in love with the first generation MR2 especially in this two tone white color. For me it was a Bertone X 1/9 inspired car but with a great engine and the outstanding Toyota reliability. I remember reading later about the supercharged version and it blew my mind. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

Been looking forward to this episode since it got announced for the Japanese language channel a while ago, It was interesting hearing that Tsuchiya-san was into the SW20 as well, currently owning one myself and despite owning an NA (without the BEAMS engine) I do agree with the points brought up. A chassis tuned NA SW20 is very stable, almost to a fault as I couldn't side brake turn during an autotest (gymkhana) but that could just be me being a newb too :)
    Great video as always, CARPRIME!

The shop is looking fantastic! Great to hear both Orido & Tsuchiya's thoughts on the AW11 & SW20 cars. I remember some videos of Tsuchiya drifting the SW20 and that solidified the car as one of my dream cars growing up. Super ironic that this black SW20 had the very same AVS wheels I wanted back in the day.
That said, as I've grown up, I really prefer the AW11. Getting to experience a well sorted AW11 at autocross events really sold me on the car's excellent character and agile handling. I've bought mine years ago and enjoyed it with a light state of tune for a good while, but have since been enjoying a massive build to engineer most everything on the car. Such a rewarding, yet challenging experience so far.

Can you believe I sold my black SW20 turbo (with gold wheels) in 2013 to get a Tesla Model S (with the same colors)? But then I had dailied my SW20, summer and winter (northern Norway), since 2004, and needed something with more than 2 seats. This channel is great! Mr Tsuchiya and those JDM Option-videos were the reason I got a AE86 (had it from 2008 to 2020). Now my daily is a MX5 NC PRHT :)

  • @not12listen

This is a wonderful video. :) It brings back a lot of good memories.
Something I've learned in my nearly 2 decades of AW11 ownership is that either the AW11 speaks to you or the SW20 speaks to you. There isn't a wrong choice, they're just very different.
I've driven quite a few SW20s - stock NA, stock Turbo and modified Turbo... They're very good cars, but the AW11 NA felt natural and it absolutely pushed me as a driver. It is unforgiving when you get near the limits of traction, which forces you to learn very, very quickly to be honest if this is your kind of car or not.
Now that I daily drive, I find myself incredibly disconnected from the driving experience compared to when I was daily driving my AW11. I would almost say that driving anything with less feedback (steering, brakes, throttle, chassis) is boring. But, that isolation in driving is becoming the overwhelming norm. Sad days indeed.

I'd kill to know how Tsuchiya set up his SW20's chassis for drivability. I've heard a water-to-air intercooler can solve the heat soak too.
But just some info-the Le Mans and first-year JGTC Supras weren't 3S-GTEs, they were 503Es. Those were purpose-built race engines that were also used in the Eagle IMSA cars and Pikes Peak Celica, and the 3S-GTE was based on IT, not the other way around.

Love seeing the AW11 getting some spotlight, the SC they showed off is minty fresh and gives me goals for how mine could look if I really go all out restoring it.
Even though the SC makes more torque, the blacktop 4AGE is a riot in these things. It sounds great and gives a nice little power bump over the stock 16-valve motor, without sacrificing much in fuel efficiency or space. Does get a bit old on the highway though, as it drones pretty bad right behind your head!

  • @zandern9489

Awesome video, many thanks for making this.
Owning two’88 Celicas I can say the 3S engine is amazing. Albeit the Japanese and European versions have more horsepower. The 3SFE is strangely more peppy on the throttle response than my 3SGE, but once the TVIS kicks in the GE it takes off!
I’m always on the hunt for the alltrac version here in the states that had the 3SGTE engine.
The 3S is easy to work on and over engineered in many ways. Yamaha did an incredible job making the heads for them.
These two amazing examples of the MR2’s are breathtaking. Thank you for sharing this. Love the new look of the shop!

ive always wanted to hear their thoughts on the AW11 specfically and was intrigued by what they were saying during the time of the AW11 being in production. I feel as though it is reversed now with AE86 and SW20 being more "show" cars rather than for performance driving, I have very rarely seen a AE86 or SW20 specfically on the local backroads, but I have defiently encountered more AW11s and 3rd generation MR-S enjoying the twisties.

Either way its good to gauge how the weight distribution is when taking a turn, almost learned that the hard way in my aw11, stay on the throttle and give it small countersteer if needed, and you'll stay in control.

17,000km AW11! That's amazing, and probably worth it at 5 Million Yen ($37,000 as of June 2022)--especially with that torquey supercharged 4A, assuming it's in prime condition. I'd buy it and drive the hell out of it. I agree with Tsuchiya-san that cars are for having fun.
But the SW20 is well superior. The 3S-GTE is--as Tsuchiya san says--a masterpiece (I have a 1992 Celica ST185) but it runs hot and needs some help. Nobody can blame anyone for going with whatever they need to, to get control of charge temperatures. When Tsuchiya san lays into it @23:28 it's no joke--it can move especially with a lighter chassis. When I hear that notchy, cable driven transmission I'm like "Yep, that's a Toyota!"
I totally agree that the handling feel and the ergonomics of the bubble jidai Toyotas are really top notch. They have one foot in the analog era, and one foot on the computerized era, and their character isn't muted by what I consider excessive control features. Orido-san's speculation of a revival of the SW20 is a great idea--imagine a light, retro feel simplistic midship without a lot of chip dependency. That would be better than the world deserves.
1990 was a good year. I was down at Kansai Gaidai between Osaka and Kyoto learning Japanese, living with a family, and exploring the land and its wonders. These will always be natsukashii.

@@Mr_jz_12 It's high in the US too. You're basically going to be paying near new car prices now, if it's in pretty good shape, and then you're looking at the possibility--even probability--of 10-15K to set it right. OR. You're going to pay if it's already been set right--but would you trust that it had been actually set right?
I've had my JDM ST185 for nine months now and it's been a glorious adventure for sure--I've learned a lot! I'll be replacing the capacitors in the ECU over the next couple of weeks. That kind of rot is the sort of thing that doesn't appear on the showroom floor.

    100万のAW11をこのレベルで仕上げるとトータル500は余裕でいく。自分がフレームからレストアした時はボディだけで300万だった。相当お買い得ですね。

Tsuchiya disrespecting the AW11. If you ever come back for American Touge 4 I will show you the true potential of the AW11. If not perhaps I will travel to Gunsai some day and show you there.

To me it feels they prefer FR and FF layout more. I've seen enough videos of people pushing the AW11 to it's limit and dancing with it on the edge to say so (especially on the Nordschleife for example).

@@tanyguch_kun1330 That's not the point of MR. It's more suited to racing as most of the weight is on the rear wheels.
MR is harder for sure to drive on the limit hence the SW20's reputation

It's interesting hearing their opinion on the cars and that the AW11 is the more difficult to drive car because of the short wheelbase. Where the SW got smeared over here in the motoring press and got a bad reputation.
Also it's funny that DK brings up the heat soak issue as when he was tuning these cars there wasn't anybody in Japan using A2W intercoolers. Various aftermarket companies (arc/hks/greddy/phoenix's power) made bigger sidemounts. But even then under constant load on a circuit it will still heat soak just because you're still limited for space in the engine bay.
If only he'd stolen the A2W core from it's brother the ST205 GT-4 celica that wouldn't be a problem. Although once you get past about 350whp it doesn't work so well.
Nowadays you can get much bigger A2W cores anyway, but the celica one bolts right up to the standard TB and turbo if you have a 3rd gen 3sgte. Plus the shorter piping means the boost response is quicker than with a sidemount.
I don't have problems with heatsoak using the ST205 unit on track but I'm not running mega power.
