Hi I am a member of Plymouth M.E.S and the Track Marshall for this miniature railway. The track is half a mile long. The grounds are fully open to the public when the railway is not running and hence has to be left in a safe and vandal proof condition, hence the concrete. The railway has been running with this type of construction at this site for over 25 years, and yes it is hard work to maintain but with little other construction options available for us. One of the club 7 1/4 Wrens did suffer a broken suspension spring last year, but against the time/ mileage that these locomotives perform the failure rate can be compared to conventional track construction.Thank you wooltman for producing a lovely video of our railway.
Hi Sophie,Many thanks for commenting.I enjoyed my run and stay with your club and I can now see the reasons behind the way your club has laid the track.Glad you enjoyed my video of our visit. Best wishes for the future.......Chris.
What a lovely little Railway Chris, although I noticed that the track has been concreted in, which surely will cause problems when it's time to make adjustments or renew track...Bob
It did concern me when I saw the concrete base Bob, I would say it wouldn't do the loco's much good either,I know the loco have suspension but with a gravel bed and wooden sleepers would give a much smoother ride. You may notice some repairs to the track base, but it wouldn't be an easy job.Another thing that bothered me is a drainage problem if your running when it was wet or raining....Great club with a good layout and a nice amount of paying customers......Best wishes Chris.
Great video work. Looks like a really well engineered railway and the formation looks almost standard gauge in places. It's a pity it has to have a concrete base to prevent vandalism, but looks pretty well maintained.
I will answer your enquiry, they cost an awful lot of money but you can buy them from a few websites/company's in GB, look for steam locomotives for sale or station road steam is company....Have a look and you will find.
Another interesting video and quite an extensive layout.
Indeed it is! Another good day out.
